Stunning games and endings... I've got a long story on that one. But hey, there can never be enough stories about positive gaming experiences, right?

I've been a multiplayer freak ever since I can remember. If a game wasn't competitive, if I couldn't prove my skills against a real human being, it had no value for me - so, naturally I was especially fond of MMOs. However, there came the day when my favourite MMO (Dark Age of Camelot) started dying due to a lot of reasons that led the majority of people of its wonderful community to turn their backs on it, and in the end I gave up as well.

Dissatisfied with most MMOs and other multiplayer games that came after, I tried to find my way back to the singleplayer kind. Which was pretty hard, I was hotheaded and didn't really see any purpose in it. I couldn't get into the Zelda games again, although I loved Ocarina of Time as a kid. I was bored by most platformers, racing games, and first person shooters. I even disliked RPGs because I had only played Oblivion at the time. I didn't realize that I was blaming those genres for my own lack of knowledge and understanding.
So then I almost gave up on gaming as a whole and only played Counterstrike from time to time. Yep, I was an idiot.

Along came Mass Effect. I knew next to nothing about it, only that it was a shooter in space and that Steam had it on sale. So, why not?
What followed was the most memorable gaming experience I've had to this day. Objectively one can argue that it isn't among the greatest games humanity has ever produced - but to me, it was perfection. It taught me to appreciate well written characters and immersive storylines again and made me realize that I've had lost all sense for these things in my games.

The ending can be seen as kind of clichéd and even a bit kitschy, but I loved every moment of it. I was so tense during the last couple of scenes, then the credits started rolling and that song set in... and I was speechless. The tune caught me off guard and gave me the chance to cool down and reflect for the first time on what I had just witnessed.

Although I've probably played better games and seen better endings over the last years, this one will always stand out. What comes to mind are for example Portal, Bastion, Limbo or Half-Life. For now. I still have a lot of catching up to do.

Mass Effect 1 and Dead Space.

I saw the Episode 2 thing coming, just not exactly like that, so Half Life 2's Episode 2 didn't really stun me.

By far the most amazing ending to a game, complicated, sad and at the same time happiness for the victory.

Not some dumb video of boss slaying or we are the champions until next time! la la la, no a real proper ending.
Myth 2 is such a good game anyway. I'd forgotten about the ending. :)

OT - It's been mentioned a lot, but the most recent one can be summed up like this...

[spoiler="Only you, can make my world seem right..."
]

Dead Space is the only game that made me feel something "extra" at the end.

BECAUSE I WAS NOT READY FOR THAT ENDING, it was like 4 in the morning, I was getting up to put my controller away and head to bed when your crazed girlfriend tries to bite your face off.

Reminds me of a few real life experiences.

Star Control 2. Best part is I can quote the last lines without spoiling anything.

"But Grandfather! What happened? Where did you go? And how did you find the Mark II?"
"That, my children, is an entirely different story."
Oh hell yes... and that music was just perfect (which was one of the games strongest suits anyways), completely built up to then what were amazingly enjoyable credits.

Eternal Sonata... I couldn't figure out why the main characters were scolding me (which the ending credits seriously felt like ... A huge lecture).

On a more positive note, this:

For me, a game that left me in awe would be Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille Zur Macht, my jaw hit the floor at simply the way it ended. As for something else, like tears, Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra. I'm almost certain I was depressed for like three days after beating it.
Xenosaga was an amazing series. The end of Episode III was so satisfying and yet so depressing.

Another tick down for Bastion. The scene with Zulf is so touching, as well as the combination of Zulf and Zia's theme for the credits. Setting Sail, Coming Home--I'm so happy I got the soundtrack.

And although its not a game, I a had very similar experience with Fight Club, where my mind comprehended the simple beauty of it all, and I cried ever so slightly. Nearly the same for the miniseries Hatfields vs McCoys, though my moment of thought was interrupted.

Man, I clapped a little bit. Such a fantastic game.
I was more confused as to why
Clayface was the last boss.

Just seemed out of place.

OP: Mass Effect the 1st. The Faunts song exacerbation my trance for a good 7 minutes.

Most recently, Spec Ops The Line. I just sat in silence, thinking it over until the credits finished.

Recently? Probably Ghost Trick for the DS. Everything about it, from it's quirky narrative, quirky characters and quirky art style, plus a great soundtrack, made me think "Damn, that was a good game. i need to let the game know how good I think it is." And, because there was nobody else in the room, I gave it a little clap. It had earnt it.
I just beat the iOS version on Monday and it is a DAMN fine ending, easily one of the best I've seen in gaming.

Also gonna go back, waaaay back and note both of Chrono Triggers "best" endings, the "To Far Away Times" Ending and the "Balloons" Ending.

There've been a number of games that left me "speechless" by the end. Some left me in awe because of how immaculate the game was and/or how jaw-dropping the ending was; others because of how awful the game turned out or how utterly abrupt or poorly done the ending was. (leaving me wondering why the hell I played in the first place, in some cases) Here are a few of the more memorable ones.

First, the good:
1: Half-Life
2: Half-Life 2 and Episode 2
3: Portal 2
4: Homeworld
5: Dead Space
6: Metroid Prime
7: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
8: Braid
---- All of these games either gave me a surprising and shocking ending, sometimes with a twist, that left me speechless, or provided me with a fitting end to an amazing ride. They will all stick with me forever.

Now, the bad:
1: Halo 2
2: Borderlands
3: Perfect Dark
4: MechWarrior 2
5: Eternal Darkness
6: Diablo 2
7: Starcraft
8: Starcraft 2
---- These too will likely stick with me forever, if only because of how awful the endings were. They were either awkwardly abrupt and unfitting, or were just poorly written and/or executed. Which is a shame as I'm quite fond of most of them and many of them are fantastic games. (excepting Halo 2)

I do this pretty easily.

I did it for Braid, Limbo, Myst II (Riven), Myst V, and of course, Portal 2.
