Honestly.. I think Homeworld could make a good movie, just cut out most of the spacefights and have show the life of the crew and the fighterpilots as the mothership hyperspaces its way to the homeplanet. Heck, it could even have a sequel about defending said homeplanet.

And Final Fantasy could probably become movies... Animated ones anyway.

Maybe Square-Enix could make an animated homeworld movie.. Win/win.
Final fantasy actually does have 2 movies (as far as I know) one is bad and the other is Advent Children.

METAL SLUG! with Micheal Bay as the director (asisted by the writer of the game with a huge stick to beat Bay with if he makes too many changes) its a match made in heaven! Metal Slug is all about the army and explosions that,s right up Bay,s alley!

I think a STALKER film could be kinda cool ... but I'm not sure how you'd go about showing the mutants, various politics, factions, the massive locale, and the assault into Pripyat and Strelok destroying the device that prohibited further entry into the Zone in a single movie.

And of course if you couldn't show (one of the best scenes ever in a video game IMO) the push through the nature strip in between the adjacent apartment complexes whilst fellow Loner Stalkers yell, scream, cheer and mourn their losses by the time the first movie ended, I don't think it would be that great a presentation..
actually the Stalker game is loosely based on this movie:

Bioshock would be a terrible movie (or at least a disgrace to the source material) because it would have to be heavily compressed into a 90 minute box office smash hit, probably losing most of its beautifully haunting atmosphere in the process.
Mass Effect would be a terrible movie (or at least a disgrace to the source material) because it would have to be heavily compressed into a 90 minute box office smash hit, probably losing most of its beautifully written sci-fi epicness in the process.
Any game ever would be a terrible movie (or at least a disgrace to the source material) because it would have to be heavily compressed into a 90 minute box office smash hit and whatever unique qualities that made that game so loved would undoubtedly be lost in translation.

a movie can be longer than 90 mins, thats pretty short dont you think?
bioshock could be easily 2 1/2 hours, however, you have to realise, how many big daddies would jack kill in a movie? 2? 3? would one suffice?

admittedly there is a terrible track record for movies based on games, however 90s games were not known for their stories, least not doom or resident evil.

ideally, what i would do is keep the gunfire and fighting, obviously a huge part of a game to a lesser degree and try to expand the cutscenes and such

I think they should remake the Postal movie.. You know.. So the Postal Dude actually looks like the Postal Dude...

Or a Sam & Max movie... I would see that...

As long as Hollywood isnt involed in any way, alot of games could be made into movies, they might even be good..

Maybe not directly from the game's story, but rather in the same universe of:
- Fallout
- Bioshock
- Assassin's creed (lineage not counting as a full movie)
- And maybe Borderlands,because...

But I'd like it more if they just stayed away from the game-movie idea completely.

If Ridley Scott directed it, I believe he would make a kick ass Assassin's Creed movie. He kind of already explored the territory in Kingdom of Heaven.

Psychonauts...oh wait that's Inception. Actually, they're not all that similar. I just thought of that Inceptionauts video when I saw the title of the thread.

More on topic: I think it's difficult to make movies based on games. It's kinda like making a movie based on one Graphic Novel. When you have one item as your source material you're pretty much forced to recreate it in another form. At that point I can't help but feel that it's pointless. Why not just experience the source material itself? This is how I felt about the Watchmen film.

Movies based on comic book series are better off when they don't pick one particular story to do. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are great because they do this. The films are very loosely based on "Year One" and "The Long Halloween" but it's hard to notice. They don't strictly follow the stories because they aren't necessarily trying to retell them. They just draw some ideas from them.

I do think there's a lot of games that would be awesome as an animated series, Psychonauts or Phoenix Wright for instance.

Metal Gear Solid at this point is becoming a long sequence of cutscenes, so I can see that working out. And if I am to have a pick...I would say a good idea would be a newer Square Enix game: they have been trying to jump on the movie ship for some time now.

There's going to be a Russian TV show based on the games.

Also, how can people justify a Bioshock movie where one of the core aspects of it is a deconstruction of linear gameplay? The entire crux point of playing the game would be lost in the translation to being film.

I vehemontly disagree with the concept of Video Game movies for this reason: If you think your favorite game should be made into a movie...your basically directly supporting the theory that Games can NEVER tell good Stories. Or that even if it IS a good story, the fact that its in a video game somehow, "undermines" the story. So OP, please don't inadvertently insult Bioshock. It had a great story that, btw could only have been effectively told through ONE medium and that is video games:
The big twist that your protagonist (and hence YOU) has been mind-controlled the whole time was effective in the game because it (ideally) made you think "Hmmm, so have i been doing all this shit because I want to or because Atlas has been telling me to. but then if Atlas didn't tell me anything, this would be a dull game. But does that mean I did it because i want to...." etc. That wouldn't work in a movie guys. And if you just wanna see Rapture on the big screen.... just play Bioshock with full graphics on a BIG screen. whats the big deal? The game still looks fantastic.

Uncharted had a great story, Prince of Persia had a great story and Mass Effect has a great story. Granted that ME's story is so incredible in scale that i actually want non-gamer sci-fi fans to see it. But a single movie would not be able to capture the incredible scale of the games and it would only portray the story in a lack-lustre way.
