I really like Mass Effect 2 (read; loved) and also liked Tali (read; loved) as a character but after I realized the fucking cult following of Tali, Liara or whatever and Mass Effect as a whole I excluded myself fast as hell.
Indeed.

It makes it very hard for me to admit that I like Tali as a character because the creepy side of the fanbase has kind of gotten all fans this creepy reputation by default.

The worst part is as Vrex said; how people seem to have created for the lack of a better term 'clans' based upon who you like, and they all just snipe at each other for liking different things.

Hell, try having a discussion about:

Pro or Anti Cerberus?
Which is better: Mass Effect 1 or Mass Effect 2?
Why do you like X character?

It's worse than the 'Religion and Politics' forum on here.

Well aware they are different, but considering a game that isnt a deep rpg is being called "rpg of the year" and all this other crap, I am going to blame the BW fanboys/girls for ruining rpgs when other devs copy, just like every FPS game now tries to copy CoD.
I think you have more of a problem with the game than you do with the fans then. The definition of a fan is that they love the object of their adoration. The same goes for you - whatever you might adore or be a fan of, someone is no doubt ready to bash it the way you've done so in this thread. But that's understandable - you're a fan, so you love whatever it is you do. But similarly, how can you then expect Mass Effect fans to *not* consider the ME series as a great RPG series if they are indeed *FANS* of it? Seriously?

You want to consider Mass Effect series as a total dissapointment or fallacy, fine - that's your decision. But make your position clear by blaming the game then rather than the fanbase that disagrees with you. Plus in case you haven't noticed, no one has tried to copy Bioware's approach thus far with RPGs (or at least I don't remember any other RPG with things like the conversation wheel. The closest that came to it was Alpha Protocol, but even there the conversation system was a lot more intense with a timer on your choices).

It makes it very hard for me to admit that I like Tali as a character because the creepy side of the fanbase has kind of gotten all fans this creepy reputation by default.
I still remember on my second playthrough I specifically seduced Jack at the end of ME2. Why? Because I knew every last Talimancer was gonna spam Youtube with the ME3 conclusion weeeeellll in advance and froth all over it. So in that respect, that particular fanbase actually dissuaded me from something I would've otherwise gravitated towards just fine on my own.

Yep...it certainly can be a nasty thing heheh.

Final Fantasy, everything that comes to things like "Whats the best game?" its always Final Fantasy. Personally meself, a few are good and even then they're not the best games ever made.

You know, as shocking as this may be to accept, most 'fanboys/girls' of popular game franchises really aren't as bad as people say they are. For the most part we aren't a bunch of drooling blood crazed internet terrorists who oppose the concept of free will and hence go around viciously flaming anyone with even the slightest implication of an opinion that differs to us.
For the most part, internet 'fanboys' are really just people who like a video game/franchise a whole lot and like to mention it and discuss it with friends. Most of the 'angry fanboy rants' I've seen are basically the end result of other people trolling them. Not them trolling other people.

Frankly I've seen some more aggressive attitude delivered from the people who hate on said fanbase then the fanbase themselves. I mean come on this whole thread is basically just a way to passive aggresively insult entire groups of people and label them under a stereotype to justify it.

I am a Halo fan, and believe it or not, while I claim to know a lot about the Halo lore and love playing the games, it also doesn't define me as a human being. I like to go to the movies, hang out with friends, read books (I'm currently reading the Ben Elton book 'Stark') and watch old movies and listen to old Jazz hits.
But because I'm a fan of Halo people will accuse me of being some kind of undereducated drunken sports jock like Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds. I might not claim to be a genius but I think I am a little higher than that, and literally the only reason people give is that I like Halo.
So? I play all kinds of other games too, Portal, Gears of War, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Otogi: Myth of demons, Saint's Row 2, Fallout 3, Psychonauts, Dead Space, Super Mario Brothers, Red Dead Redemption, Prototype, Batman Arkham Asylum.... just generally a lot of games.
But apparently I'm a 'Halo fanboy' so obviously I only ever play Halo and Madden and yell 'dude' a lot while drunkenly throwing up and belching, right?

I actually already made a post about this, give me a second to dig it up....

"Honestly, I hate the Anti-fans. You know, the people who leap at the opportunity to insult some popular thing and in so doing insult the people who like said popular thing all the while acting all smug and self superior about themselves for doing so.
Even when in their criticism of said franchise/character/movie/book/game/band they accidentally reveal that they know absolutely nothing about what they are talking about and continue to act smug about it anyway.
(I.E Moviebob anytime he mentions Halo)

I mean you see hundreds of these people on youtube comment streams, eagerly demanding that everyone know how much they hate this band or this movie or this character, in other words actively seeking out things that they hate just so that they can let total strangers know how much they hate them. Seriously, this is so much worse than any fanboy could ever hope to be.

Hell most, if not all, of the time a fanboy rage is only brought on thanks to the anti-fans and haters in the first place. Hey, there would be less people angrily defending Halo if there were less people flaming it and by extension insulting the fanbase, people.
This isn't rocket science, a fanboy is a snake that is poisonous and deadly but won't bother you if you don't bother it, an anti-fan is the person poking it with a stick and saying the bands it likes are dumb.

So yeah in conclusion, the kind of fan I hate the most are the people who are fans of hating on other fans.... you heard me."

So if you ask me, at the end of the day a Halo fan who can't spell, uses numbers instead of letters and declares that MASTR CH33F IZ DA BEZT CARACKTA EVAR!!!!1111!!!!!11!!! on a thread or forum dedicated to such discussion is still much more justifiable and defendable then some guy just waltzing into a Halo thread dedicated to discussion among the Halo community and proclaiming:
"I don't play Halo and I'm proud of myself for not wasting my time with a mediocre FPS and being surrounded by all you stupid philistines who love your one dimensional Masterchief instead of the epic Shakespearian legend that is the mute Gordon Freeman!"

Seriously, looking at those two people, I know who I'd rather slap in the face. It's not the guy who can't spell who is yelling about how much he loves a certain game who is an idiot, it's the person who has a personal problem with that.

/Rant

OT: Okay if I had to pick one it would probably have to be certain people in the Mass Effect fanbase. Just to be clear, I am among them and I even post regularly on the Bioware social network and have made quite a few friends there but the fact remains that there are some annoying people in the fanbase, not to mention the people that we count on youtube comment pages (if indeed we even bother to count them at all, that's one population I have no problem condemning as idiots).

I could go on about some silly arguments we've had in the past on the Bioware social network, and how nowadays the bitterness surrounding how people respond to certain aspects of the game(try being a fan of Ashley Williams and getting along in the Bioware forums, I dare you) and about how people there get worked up really heavily over stuff that doesn't matter.

No sir, what I don't like is how so many of the arguments are based on the love interests. There's like seperate nations, each dedicated to a different character. Some are even 'allied' now like it's an actual war.
People flame each other over it and get into huge fights. It's incredible to watch really, we end up turning this into a 'my fictional girlfriend is better than yours' kind of thing.

I dunno, while I still love the games and get along with a reasonable portion of the fanbase, some of the stuff that gets said in and around the games makes me an angry Vrex. Sorry if this description seems a bit dry but I think I blew away most of my steam with that huge rant.

But still yes, above all else some really creepy fan art (and even worse 'hate art' in some cases) certainly does make me a little creeped out by the fanbase that I myself am a part of.

EDIT: as a side note, my rant isn't exclusively about Halo, it's about all franchises really and for the record I ackowledge that there are dicks in our fanbase. No point denying that, I just don't think it's as bad as people would have you believe.

EDIT 2: Also I apologize if I came across as rude or issuing personal attacks to anyone reading this thread or anyone who posted in it, it wasn't my intention. I was speaking broadly without any specific targets in mind, so if anyone was offended in any way I apologize.
Definitely this. I remember once upon a time it was cool to like all the popular series. Now it's like it's suddenly swapped to being cool that you hate something. I still can't quite fathom it. Why would you be proud of not liking something? You just lost out on what could have been an interesting experience, if anything you should be disappointed, not proud. More over, why would you insult others for liking it? It's their opinion, and it doesn't affect you in the slightest.

I've said that I don't like games, I mean I don't like Halo using your example, but I would never go so far as to seriously insult someone for liking it(I may joke say it to a friend, but they know I'm joking) or go into Halo threads just to say how much I hate it. Funnily enough despite a lot of people saying the Halo fanbase is bad. I've honestly never considered it to be a bad fanbase. Call of duty? Maybe, largely down to it's sheer size, but I've not seen any obsessive Halo fans in years. Infact, you know what? That's the case for the majority of the fanbases mentioned, they are larger fanbases. Thus, the small percentage of the fanbase which is 'obsessive' counts for more people.

What's most annoying of all? You actually get used to threads on the said game just turning into people saying how much they hate the game. Using a game I like that everyone seems to hate. I very rarely find a thread on about FFXIII, which doesn't contain atleast one person saying how bad it is, and how people who like it are delusional/idiots, or any other insult. Infact, there's even people in this thread saying that. It's simply staggering.

Well, Mass Effect 2 did kind of ruin her entire character by turning her into a shrinking violet sex doll.
Actually I never saw her being turned into that at all within the game.

But unfortunately its fans were all too willing to turn her into that...therein lies the problem I think. :)

I'd say Bioware and Valve fanatics but that would just be too predictable out of me, let's try to go one post on this sort topic without me bitching about them.

Some of the diehard Touhou fans are downright scary, most of the fan-made Touhou works are just really, really, really scary.

Well all games suffer from annoying fanbase, but if I had to choose one then Valve's fanbase. Good god these people irritate me with their over saturating praising of Valve games and all things Valve. They try to convert you despite not favoring their games and treat you like crap if you refuse. And as a CoD and Halo fan I really hate it when the Valve fans insult and mock the games and their fanbase, funny considering they're no different the damn hypocrites.

Note that I don't mean all Valve fans are annoying, but the extremist, the converters, and the assholes. I like Valve and I like their games, but its more vocal fans really need to stop bothering me.

Tali by herself is fine and her loyalty mission was great, but her romance path consists entirely of Tali stammering and Shepard whipping out egotistical one-liners in Mark Meer's atrocious voice. Remember the confident, charming, streetwise mechanic from the first Mass Effect? Yeah, me neither.

Come to think of it, all of the romances in Mass Effect that weren't with Ashley or Garrus were handled terribly. Thane Krios is the absolute nadir of the whole romance subplot jamboree, but Miranda, Jacob, Liara, Kaidan, Tali, and Jack weren't much better.
*sigh* And for you I will say the same as the other poster I quoted - you hate the game rather than the fans: the stated topic of this thread actually. But meh...why bother. I can just see the future posters line up to shit-talk not about the fandoms and what makes it annoying, but seeing this as an opportunity to just rant on the games instead. After all...let's all be Moviebob some more and fail to stick to the topic to express our biases in an angry judgemental manner instead, right?

I think video games have the most annoying fanpeoples. Don't see that with board games...
Someone has not met Settlers of Catan pro-gamers. Also, I am willing to put Warhammer in there as well (I know there is no "board" but you do make maps to fight on and it does become close to the same thing).

For video games, I would have to say Bioware. They can write an okay script, but there comes a time where you realize that it is just B sci-fi movie quality but you just don't see it when playing because the plot is divided up in little sections and filled with numerous fights in between.

Halo! I don't care what you say Halo fans, Master Chief is not a deep and interesting character. He's a walking lump of metal with a gun attached. He has NO personality and frankly anyone who thinks he does is fucking deluding themselves!
Neither does Soap, McTavish, Roach, Ghost...Ramirez...you get the idea =/

Agreed, Halo may be bad, but my money is on CoD; by far the worst fanboy base on the internet. I think Yathzee said it best: First Person Deranged Paranoid Power Fantasy For Right Wing Shut Ins Who Would Blow Their Own Nuts Off With A Real Gun And Probably Already Have Done...Shooter... (cap letters were intentional, watch the movie)

Not saying the games themselves are bad, heck I would enjoy a run through the singleplayer or co-op any day. Just never get me near the multiplayer fanboys...5 minutes of their retarded exploits and I'm ready to choke the life out of them.

You honestly don't see the difference? In exchange for its DRM, Valve offers you the ability to automatically download updates, store saves/settings on their servers, re-download the game wherever/whenever you want. Ubisoft didn't allow any of the above, had no offline mode, and if I remember correctly they had an install limit as well.

The reason Valve gets praised in this situation is the number of bonuses it offers in exchange for DRM. It's one of the few cases where a cracked version (IE one not connected to the Steam network) actually has less features.
As someone who lives in a rural area and isn't always guaranteed a connection... no. I don't see the difference at all. Steam Offline mode doesn't work often enough to even call it a feature, you are locked out of your own games until the patch is forced on you, require frequent online validation of even single-player games that you bought the retail box for, I don't need to save me settings because I don't have 90 computers to play on, and downloading the game whole-cloth is often more impractical than just, say, walking over to a shelf and putting the disk in the drive.

Though I thank you for proving my point about Valve fanboys.
