Stay far, far, far, far away from Blizzard's corner in March Mayhem. Fanboyism rears its head in those threads more than anywhere else, for pretty much all games, including Starcraft.

Homeworld is the best RTS ever anyway :p.

Because they are marketed well.
That's a very cynical view to take.

This thread instantly turned into "name a game you hate, and therefore don't want to hear praised". Color me wholly unsurprised.

OT: Games that have been around forever that get a pass due to nostalgic/retro value. Sorry to say it, but while SMBC was a milestone, the fact is that modern games are more deep, complex, artistic, fun, and better in nearly every way, so SMBC should not always hover around the top three slots for "best game of all time" polls. The only way that it measures up is when people make painfully arrogant if-you're-criticizing-it-you're-obviously-missing-the-point excuses like "it's beautiful in its simplicity" or "it's still kinda fun, even thirty years later!" Others include Morrowind (I'm three days into it; so far, not having as much fun as with Oblivion, despite my honest efforts to like it), Final Fantasy VII, Metroid, Galaga, Space Invaders, etc. (I'm sure a few came to your mind, as well).

I'm not a graphical fetishist or a modern-is-best snob, but people that act like these games are above scrutiny/can't possibly be compared to contemporary masterpieces are basically telling me that a king's horse and carriage make for better everyday transportation than a fully-loaded Maserati... or, more aptly, the sort that would tell me that vinyls are better than my MP3 player; you may have a barely-discernible improvement in sound quality and the ability to pretend you know something the rest of the modern world doesn't, but I can carry thousands of songs with me anywhere, switch between songs with a flick of my thumb when I want to hear something in particular, set it to randomly choose songs whenever I'm not feeling overly choosy, adjust the EQ to accommodate a particular genre of music, I listen to my music without bothering anyone else in crystal-clear quality with my sound-dampening studio headphones, all on a very durable device slightly smaller than my debit card. You'll find innovation in all modern electronic devices because it makes them more accessible, efficient, reliable, and capable of accomplishing much, much more; video games have evolved in similar ways for the exact same reasons, and to pretend otherwise, whether it be done deliberately for "geek cred" or just of an innocent case of over-sentimentality, is disingenuous in my eyes. The games of today are better than the games of yesteryear, and the ones of the future will be better than current-gen games.

To clarify, I'm not talking about people that appreciate them as classics, because that would be stupid. I can certainly appreciate the allure of a classic muscle car, even if it is obsolete for all intents and purposes; however, a '69 Charger won't fulfill your basic needs as well as an '09 Camry (unless getting tickets is a basic essential of your street-raceless and car-chaseless life), and anyone that asserts that the heavy steel box with a gas-chugging 425hp motor and a spartan interior is overall better than a highly-engineered, aerodynamic, practical-yet-comfortable, equipped-for-everyday-life, gas-sipping sedan is either a professional driver that actually requires a high-performance vehicle, or douchebag trying to act like there's a reason for driving one around town for any reason other than simply wanting to impress people (because god forbid anyone know they're making an effort to be cool). The gamer parallel to the douchebag I just mentioned aren't people that say "oh, X was a great game in its time", but the people that say "X is the greatest game ever made" as though it were objective fact.

...sorry for the long post. Combining ephedra and coffee tends to make over-loquaciousness seem okay.

MW2. It's boring, takes no risks, and you die at the slightest provocation- but I lost count of how many times I shouted 'How did that not kill you?!?' to friends.
Definitely this!
I just didn't connect to it in any way, and the only thing that amuses me now about MW2 is booster justice. That's about it.

Not saying it's not a good game, just, not for me.

Assassins's Creed was humiliated by people for the bad AI, boring repetitive missions, and bland story, was it not? Was it ever a game that received such praise?

Hey, there are some games that just are overshadowed by the leviathans of the games industry (eg COD, halo(which i wish people would give it a rest and stop hating about it), gears, killzone etc) and hardly ever get a mention (from what you have heard personally).....

Yes, people can stick their hate of the game or its hype, so Fallout, in my opinion, can go suck a dick, you found it good, ok, i didn't, same with WoW.

One other thing, I prefered Cod World at war to MW and MW2, sure, the MP was unbalanced as shit, but i like a challenge for once

Thinking about it, i should make a thread about underrated games, hang on a sec.......

Yes, I heard very many good things about it. Didn't particularly annoy me though.

Portal.

I'm a Valve fanboy and I'm sick of hearing of it.

It wasn't that great in my opinion.
I thought it was good, but yeah. Portal.
Oh, I thought it was good too.

Just not the second coming of Jesus Christ like some people I've seen.

Ocarina of Time.

Let the hate comments begin.
Agreed. I got it on virtual console for 10 bucks because I was interested in playing "The greatest game of all time!". Well, it was certainly worth my money but, really? Seeing as I had already finished twilight princess and loved it, I had high hopes but it just wasn't as good. Twilight princess had way better dungeons, a much more interesting overworld, and a much more affective intro for me. Oot is a very good game, especially for the time but there are better games out there.

This
In fact, everything from Valve
They're great, we get it
CoD
Bioshock
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
Morrowind
Bioware's games (and that's coming from a hardcore Bioware fanboy who has no doubt annoyed other with such praise, but enough is enough at some point.)
The two first fallouts
Planescape: Torment
Bioshock
Minecraft
WoW
Silent Hill 2
Painkiller. It flowed like ass if you tried to actually collect the damn souls, the bosses weren't all that great and the graphics looked like something I'd expect from the wii
Zelda games
Early sonic games
Bioshock
Mafia 1&2
Braid
The Persona games (you'd think they were the jesus of JRPGs or something)
CHRONO MOTHERFUCKING TRIGGER. Seriously, it's dull as all hell
Earthbound, for reasons mentioned in the above entry. Yawn-o-Rama
Final Fantasy VII. People. It's over a decade since it came out. Shut up already.
To some extent, shadow of the colossus

I realize this post makes me look like a hateful, hateful monster, but I'm just in need of some venting =P
Do any fucking games deserve praise to you? At least you're consistent i can say that much. =)
I have quite a few games I'd like to praise, yes :3

Penumbra: Overture, for scaring me shitless and being very interesting while doing so
Overlord, for allowing you to slaughter hobbits and be an evil asshole as opposed to the eternal good guy
Saint's Row 2, for being a kinda fun gta-clone that translated well into console play
The Force Unleashed, for rekindling my interest in Star Wars
Jedi Academy, for much of the same reason
Dungeons and Dragons online, for translating the core game concepts of the Pen and Paper game into a fun MMO
Oblivion, for it's (admittedly unrefined but nonetheless interesting) take on combat
Warcraft 2&3, for being accessible and interesting RTS' even for a noob and introducing me to the kind-of-fun DOTA mode
Duke Nukem 3D for being so hilariously over-the-top that I couldn't avoid having a good time playing it
Ninja Gaiden Black, for being quite challenging, yet not impossible, and running with the silliest of concepts
Pure, for being an ATV racing game that captures quite a bit of what driving an ATV is like.
Assassin's Creed, for being a stealth(ish) game I could play without succumbing to autocannibalistic rage.
Blazblue, for having fighters that play extremely different to each other and being easy to pick up, but hard to master.
Crash Bandicoot 1-3 for being colorful, fun adventures that always were hilariously tongue-in-cheek.
Trine, for having an interesting concept
Psychonauts for being, well, very interesting and well-thought out.
Unreal tournament 2004, for being the most fun I've ever had in multiplayer

There's more where that came from, but that's from the top of my head, and of course, this is just my personal opinion.

Runescape!

I thought that game was dead long ago, but suddenly people never shut up about it again, Jesus...

Also, Farmville...

And a more serious note, Modern Warfare 2, you're either really quite stupidly good at it or absolutely awful, there's rarely a middle ground.

It's also true, in most cases.
Games with good marketing but shitty everything else will result in people going "OH GOODIE!", buying, and then returning the game disappointed.

That doesn't qualify as popular. People aren't idiots who will play a game repeatedly just because they liked the trailer.

(as an aside, Chum is Fum)
