I'm sick of hearing 'I discovered this really amazing band at the weekend' and it being a very popular and critically well recieved band that everyone has heard of but just hasn't charted. I am also sick of hearing the word 'indie' being used as a genre to describe pop music because some people think it's uncool to listen to pop.

Indies one of the silliest names for a genre since 'alternative' was coined in the nineties. Indie at one time meant any band, regardless of genre, who was either unsigned or signed to an independent label. Pretty straight forward, right? Who in the hell decided to co-opt that for a specific musical sound? I want to meet them. I want to fight their face for confusing the hell out of everybody.

That point's a bit subjective though, isn't it? I mean, what you find pleasant, others might find ear splittingly annoying, and vice versa. I understand it's just your interpretation of the word, but it still just seems a bit too drastic to class something as "not music" based on that.

I disagree. If it isn't pleasant, it's just annoying noise (the difference between which, I quite agree, is subjective). This is, after all, a complaint thread!

To start off with I'll say that normally I'll avoid pop music like the plague (it's just not my thing) but when I do have to listen to it(during a tv show or some such thing) there is one thing in particular that annoys the shit out of me and that is auto-tuning. Possibly the worst discovery for tone deaf talentless hacks was to make a smash hit by making themselves sound like weird cyborg people.

I really don't like anything by Michael Jackson. Also, I've noticed I really only like rap if it has actual instruments playing, not the same four seconds of crappy beatbox on a loop. That generally makes the distinction between what actually has meaning and what's all about bitches 'n hoes and such. Although, I'll admit I avoid rap for the most part.

Going back to a point raised by Lawyer105...

Does EVERY track need to have a profound meaning? Most, if not all, popular peices of music (this includes classical pieces) are remembered for sounding good. A deep meaning, to my ears, is a bonus, not a necessity.

Why do we still get these stupid music videos from female singers and rap artists designed to make our cocks hard? I've never known anyone to buy a song just for the video, let alone for that purpose.
Equally, I've never known any male friend purchase a song just because they think the singer is cute. The feminist hypocrisy makes me smile.

The other thing that annoys me is the belief that an artist going mainstream and "selling out" is a very very bad thing and that anyone who does so is the NEW ANTICHRIST. (The previous one being the last band/artist to do so)
Two reasons why this is perfectly acceptable - if you choose to focus on music as a career, then if someone offers you lots more money for a slight tweak to your style, I think you're going to say yes.
The other reason is that an artist's musical style has to evolve - Green Day are a good example in spite of or possibly because of the vitriole they receive - and mainstream music isn't always as bad as some people seem to think.

I hate anything without a soul, if you are going to create the most over the top pretentious pompous Symphonic metal in the world do it with passion. Don't care that people are laughing at you for using 22 keyboards in one gig!

If your bothered what people think about you you have no place in the music industry! That way lies rubbishy corporate nonsense, the true artists are mavericks. I like everything though, if it strikes a cord with me I will defend it to my dying breath, which is why I went to see Opeth in a Huey Lewis and the News T shirt!

But the one thing I hate with a passion is people listening to bands I like ironically. When they sell Motor-head T shirts in teeny girl shops that is the epitome of everything that is wrong in the world of music!

Because it's one of my favourite songs, it's an absolute classic...and they cut it to ribbons.

A few music related things that irk me.

1.) People who go on all day about how wide their musical tastes are but then still throw up a crucifix when walking through the classical, jazz or (and this really bugs me) new age sections of a music store. There is some beyond amazing stuff that ends up getting thrown into the new age section in most stores simply because that's the catch all area for kind of odd stuff that they can't really fit in anywhere else. New Age does not equal random synth or piano notes and whale noises.

2.) Endless subgenres. Yes, I can understand to some extent why there's a need for breaking music down into as many subgenres as it has been. It still bugs me when I see something described as "trip hypno light death metal" (which is, like, totally different than "ultra death techno pop metal"!!!)

3.) Having one album doesn't make you a fan. Not really a big deal, but another thing that bugs me. Oh, so you're a fan of Metallica? Yeah! What's your favourite album? The Black Album! Do you have any other Metallica albums? *crickets* There's nothing wrong with only liking one album, or even just one song, that a band has ever put out.. but if that's the case then you aren't really a fan of that band, you're a fan of that song or album.

4.) The Beatles are not god. Not much more to say here other than it bothers me when you're treated as some sort of leper when you admit publicly that you don't really like bands such as the Beatles, The Beach Boys, etc. It may or may not mean that we don't see their place in music history, but it does mean that *gasp* their music just doesn't do anything for us.

Shut up, Justin Bieber! You are being used by others to make money, and in less than half a decade your career will be over, replaced by some new teen idol whom everyone will complain about. But I'm complaining about you know, so stay focused!

Say what you want about the Jonas Brothers. As shit as they were, they had more class than you. Yes, you are being outclassed by the Jonas Brothers, congratulations. It's bad enough that so much mainstream pop-music has to be about partying and getting girls, now some underaged kid is going to join in the fray? How is anyone going to relate to you in "Baby" when you're chasing jailbait? How is anyone going to take you serious when you look like a cross between Macaulay Culkin and Vanilla Ice? You make generic, shitty music and your fanbase is one of the most despicable kinds one can have. And stop trying to make yourself look like some kind of sex object, you're like 5 foot tall and as skinny as my forearm!

There, rant over. Now I don't have to talk about Bieber anymore for the incoming week, as I have already ventilated my rage.

Also, I don't like rap because I don't relate to what their lyrics is about, which is shooting people, hoes and other black people. They also sing about their hard life in slums and in the street, I can't relate to that either. If you like rap, it's fine by me, just don't push it onto me or you'll feel my anti-rap wrath.

tell you what i hate? a lot of people don't take it into account but i absolutely despise the snare sounds on most RnB records these days. in the 90's early 00's they had big nice and meaty snare drum sounds, now all the snare sounds are replaced with a clap with a tiny little hint of a snare drum! can people not hear that it sounds shit!? (if you hadn't noticed i am a drummer)

Alright, big pet peeve of mine is probably metal heads who really appreciate people doing interesting and complex things in music, yet snub their nose at say, Joni Mitchell. That lady has done some freaking amazing things musically. Like, freaking. amazing. Look into it.

My number one genre is and always will be metal. I listen to everything from Sabbath to black metal. But, as soon as I say that, people think that's all I'm into. I have 15 days of music on my iPod, and about 8 days of it is metal. The other half-ish is everything from old school train-beat Johnny Cash, to grunge, hip hop, modern rap, gangster rap, folk, prog rock, classic rock, country, everything! I'm a metalhead, but that doesn't mean I'm not open minded. I don't like the bigot metalheads who think that METAL IS THE ONLY TRUE MUSIC!!!!! Because that isn't true. If you don't like a certain kind of music, that's your opinion. It gives someone else that joy of music, and that's all that matters.

This will be a rather odd complaint, and probably people won't really feel it, but whatever.

I really, really, really, really don't understand how people can like latin rock. No, I'm not talking about anyone from the USA, but latin people themselves. Theres people that think they're effing brilliant, and let me tell you, what I hear is from them is music that sounds copy pasted from generic 80's rock. Seriously, they all sound like that.
I'm the kind of person that still doesn't really care what people listen to, but this is I cannot stand.

And if you're latin just like me, then you've probably had already gathered: I don't give a blue-eyed flying toss about Cerati, or any latin star for that matter.

Seriously, never base your musical assumptions whats on the radio, because that's only about 0.5% of the music in existence right now.
