girls dont suck at video games? clearly you have never met me on civilization or COD4. (maybe i dont suck at FPSs and turn based, just 4's? yes, that must be it.) really though, its probably all a social thing. if i werent a crazy person i wouldnt play so many video games, and if i didnt play so many video games i probably wouldnt be as good as i am (except the 4's, but only because its difficult to be any worse than i already am)

i dont really deal with prejudice online though, as on top of being a completely fictional entity (i generally start off 1v1 games with a line like "hi, i dont exist") i use this name pretty much everywhere and always communicate via text rather than voice(partially becuase of what i play, partially because i prefer typing and reading to talking and listening)

Here's my favorite stereotype. Knew this would crop up in a thread like this. Can we as a species please get over the notion that all men are inferior to women simply on account of the size and shape of our genitalia? Maybe defining characteristics like intellect and maturity are based on individuality, not chromosomes.

Rant aside, I have a great deal of respect for girls who game, possibly because they seem to be an endangered species, correct me if I'm mistaken. I treat female gamers pretty much the same as I'd treat my male peers. People who treat girls who game with less than that respect are wrong and should be punched.
Everything I was about to say summed up.

i'd like to meet some more gamer girls. i've meet 1 in the past 6 months and even though she's close to my age, she acts like she's 15 which annoys me to no end. i just avoid her

Gamer girls are really annoying in my opinion. I really dont like them "treading on our territory" Especially the ones that think they're so fucking special just because thay are a girl.
You are the stupidest person....do you have any way to possibly conceive how wrong you are. Since when was gaming a guys territory. Thats like saying that Guys are the only people who eat lots of food and then if a female ate a large lunch she would be trespassing on our territory. Annoying only because they probably own you on every online game properly without using cheap tactics like spawn killing (In this bracket i admit there are girls who spawn kill and i'm not stereotyping I'm just trying to bash this guy without ammunition so). In my experience i have never met a girl online who thought they where special and have played some of the best games with female players.

How do you figure that? Seems like a very sexist comment to me. Why is sexism acceptable one way but not the other?

You know, I've noticed this too, I know other girl gamers and, well I feel bloody ashamed to know them because they're acting like ditzy retards just to get attention. Not that many I'm glad to say, but they do make me cringe.

I fail to see why gender would have an effect on a person's ability to react to a moving image.

I think it's a point of assumption and stereotyping, people assume that girls don't like to play video games.

it's almost like an exterm with them. this particular one i was talking about is full of drama. it's the same with women that are in to anime. they are overly consumed by it and act like retards and it's just a huge turn off....in the sense you're ok if you never see/hear that anime and or game name again
as far as the gamer girls go and gaming. a vast majority of the ones i meet on a whim play WoW and they feel playing that for 8 hours a day makes them a gamer. no hate on wow.

Depends really on the type of game or community you're in. From my observations, competitive games such as Counter-Strike and all tend to be filled more with elitist or aggressive players who are more focused on being the best as opposed to having fun. It's not a true stereotype for everyone who plays these games, obviously, but much of the population inhabiting them do. Therefore, most girls are naturally seen and treated different on these games by these types of people, unless they share the same kind of attitude. A lot of the gamer girls I know wouldn't go anywhere near CSS but when I actually play Counter-Strike, I see a few girls who fit right in with the competitive crowd.

On the contrary, you can often find a much larger amount of gamer girls in social or roleplaying games such as World of Warcraft. Typically, because these sorts of games have much less rivalry or aggression in them, it's more laid back and the types of people who play them are often more social, but they still treat female gamers differently, albeit more in the way they'd rather suck up to them and give them things. I used to be a part of a big roleplay community on Garry's Mod and I did know a lot of girls on there, even got into a relationship with one, none of them were treated differently and those that seemed to flaunt their femininity in people's faces were often told to get off their high horse.

Still, I don't think it's too much of a big issue, I'll probably never get it. My ex seemed to be pretty severe in this behaviour. Whenever we were on an RPG, she'd choose a feminine name and it was fairly obvious she was a girl. Whenever it was CSS or TF2 or something, she'd use this typical, male gamer name and even went as far as to use voice changers because she didn't want people think less of her.

So what you're really saying is that girls aren't like guys at all?

I think with anime girls, they're emulating their favourite character because they're obviously not interesting enough to get noticed by the man-folk, but most girls like that are all about the drama and attention.
I used to play WoW, but it never felt like a game to me (not in a weird 'WoW=life' way) it just never felt game-y to me.

i play wow in short burst. i play for like 2 maybe 3 weeks. cancel my account and let it set there and collect dust for abotu 3 months. my highest character is a lv 32...and i just got there.
but i recently had a conversation/argument with a "girl gamer" who only plays wow. she claimed to me she wasn't totally consumed by WoW. i told her she is so far off from being a gamer girl it's not even funny. then quoted her on how just last week she bought parts to make a kick ass computer just to play WoW then almost cried that she might not be able to play next month. I properly told her that she might as well never play any other game seeing she bases her entire life off wow and the last thing the gaming culture needs is another body encouraging developers to be lazy. make some crap that will never fly and piss off everyone else. needless to say she wasn't happy with that statement

I think that girls can game, and should game. But I also think that the reason they don't is because they don't really want to a lot of the time. I remember one time when my friend came round with his girlfriend and we went on the XBOX,she was having a go at us saying, 'What, you can really sit in front of a TV on a game (Fable II I think it was) for over an hour?' and was really shocked when we told her about the time when we were at my friends house and went through Resistance FoM in one go (with the occassional break for food, toilet etc.). I don't know if it's true, but I reckon that guys can just immerse themselves in the gaming experience more than girls can, and for that reason, most girls won't enjoy it as much. Tell me if I'm wrong, that's just a guess.

From my time playing TF2, I can tell you more often than not, players and especially admins will bend over backwards for you if you are girl. Say a little insult to her? Kicked. Banned.

It's kind of pathetic really.
I've noticed the same thing, particularly in TF2 (or maybe just cause that's the only game in which I've known that a certain player is a girl). I live in Australia and as such there's a (presumably) very small female TF2 community, there's one such gamer that I've occasionally seen playing and when she joins/leaves a server she takes with her a veritable harim of male gamers willing to concede to her every demand whether or not she actually asks... It's quite sad...

Lmao!
I just can't understand how people can get like that about games. They need a good talking-to when they do though. I knew a girl like that, but she was like it with every MMORPG she could find, gaia, Flyff, and the worse thing was she tried to get everyone else to download them.
I'm not that much of a dedicated gamer, but I can tell when people take it too far.
