...I forgot Rise of The Argonauts. That's.. actually pretty deep in terms of role-playing a character.. at least within the role you're given. You role-play the thoughts and motivations of Jason, not what he's doing. But still - it's ambiguous within that context, and you have a very nice link between the way you fight and the way you act. Much more subtle than reviews gave the game credit for.

..I think I'll have to go with Fallout 1... or Icewind Dale 2... gah..

I always had a soft spot for Kingdom Hearts. Is it my favorite? No. But it's the game that got me into RPGs.

For real though:
- Pokemon Gold/Silver (16 badges. Nuff said.)
- FFIV
- FFVII
- Lost Odyssey
- Chrono Trigger

By the way, I don't really consider Zelda an RPG. It was always more of an action/adventure to me.

I wouldn't know what game is the best RPG. RPgs are so varied now it is impossible to say. I can say with confidence that the Monster Hunter series make for some of the best action RPGs I've ever played.

I always loved the paper mario games. Especially the first for me, it was one of my favorite games on the N64, (no small feat, because I liked quite a few of them). It had great gameplay mechanics, especially for a turn based game. It was a very fun approach to the mario universe as well as rpgs in general.

I also really like world of warcraft, as well as skies of arcadia too.

The pokemon games deserve a mention too (I personally prefer blue and red, but that's mostly from nostalgia)

YAY! other people agree with me, oblivion is the greatest game ever.
OBLIVION LOVERS UNITE!
lets make Bethesda make ES:5 so we can have a new set of awesomeness shoved down our nostrils.
COME MY COMRADES TO BETH'S HEADQUARTERS! lol, but seriously, oblivions the greatest game ever. beth needs to hurry up and make ES:5 so we can have a more evolved version.... hopefully with throwing knives and shurikens and a scythe....and hopefully also with a compass...

Fallout 3. I have played every RPG you can think of, virtual or table top. I have spent countless hours on F3, gotten every achievement, and bought all of the expansions the respective days that they came out. I have had at least 4 characters, all at about 90 hours of play. If I could play any one game for the rest of my life, it would be this. This game is so good because it breaks the traditional RPG game format and creates and easy to pick up shooter that is both funny, dramatic, and has a large play area. The different collectibles had me starting new accounts to collect them all, just to make my character the most epic being in the D.C. area. I will admit, the original story ended wayyyy too abruptly and left too many questions. They fixed this with their third add-on, "Broken Steel". This is why Fallout 3 is the greatest RPG / greatest game of all time

If you're counting the Zelda games as an RPGs. Then yes, Ocarina of Time is the greatest RPG game.

Other than that, probably Fallout 3, Dark Messiah or one of the better JRPGs(golden sun, the good FF games, etc.)

I don't count most western RPG's because they are all just a digital frontend for DnD. They all tend to suck in that reguard. very empty, often giving you many choices however they are all meaningless choices. They lack interesting story.

morrowind would be better if the graphics were up to scratch
But the best RPG has got to be Fallout 3. I mean come on you can collect bobble heads and you get V.A.T.S
Are you shitting me? If the GRAPHICS were up to scratch? You do realize the context of WHEN the game came out really factors into these things. When Morrowind came out, it pushed video cards to their limits. I had to buy a brand new computer just for this game. As far as gameplay and story goes, Morrowind beats Oblivion hands down. Oblivion looks prettier now, but then again Oblivion is over a generation ahead of Morrowind.

There are plenty of games that have bad graphics even during their respective generations. Shadow Madness for the PS1 had horrid graphics and great gameplay/story. Within a systems lifetime you see the progression of awesome graphics until the maximum potential of the system is brought out. Look at FF7 (which was phenominal looking at release), FF8 (again, a superb game that looked alot better than 7 graphics wise) and FF9 (another step up from FF8).

Now comparing each RPG in the game generation it was released, we see that some stand head and shoulders above others. Chrono Trigger gets alot of love, but it was also released at the very end of the SNES lifetime, perhaps the greatest rpg system out there (nostalgia tinted glasses noted, but during it's lifetime it was THE system to have for RPGs). You still gotta compare it against games like Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire and FF6, but it stands tall for reasons other than just pretty graphics. If you compare it against NES era games, that's just plain silly. Go the other way and you gotta compare it with Xenogears and Grandia. Nope, you gotta localize your tastes for how good the game was when it was released and not be biased by present day standards.

Yes, there are alot of pretty games out now. Many of them don't hold a candle to games released earlier but with inferior graphics. I'd certainly trade in Blue Dragon long before I even considered pawning my copy of Suikoden 2 or Panzer Dragoon Saga. Rarity aside, these are just GOOD GAMES. A good game doesn't stop being fun because the game generation has advanced. It's nice if one gets a remake (FFIV for the DS is a notable example), but you still pull out your old system to enjoy the experience.

On the note of remakes: Skies of Arcadia: legends should NOT be considered the greatest rpg ever, because it's simply the remake of skies of arcadia for the dreamcast. It's like saying that Street fighter II: turbo is the greatest game ever. A game should be great whether it's the original or a remake, not because it's a remake on your console. While I might agree that SoA:L is on the top ten rpgs of the gamecube, I would be hard pressed to figure out the other six games to compliment Tales of Symphonia, Pokemon and that other rpg the gamecube has.

While fallout 3 was fun, it pretty much plays as a fps with levels. It's like taking a zelda game, and adding experience points and levels (we like to call that Secret of Mana). For a pure rpg of this generation, I would like to put forth Tales of Vesperia as the best rpg of the PS3/Xbox360 generation. It has solid gameplay and your hero isn't all angsty about destroying evil people or the world (looking at you Star Ocean 4!). For the best of all time I'll have to say Baldurs gate 2. Years later I still put hundreds of hours into this game. It's a close thing to Morrowind, but BG2 stands the test of time.

Topic should explain it. The other day me and some friends were playing Dragon Age: Origins when one of them said it sucked. Thus led to me watching an argument of what RPG-based game was best. The two I heard most were Final Fantasy VII and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I didn't know what to think. What's your opinion?
My understanding is that it's Chrono Trigger and then Chrono Cross followed closely behind.
My personal favourite is Final Fantasy VIII, but I know that won't be a popular vote.

Digital Devil Saga, Mario RPG and Earthbound are my winners. Maybe White Knight Chronicles as well if that counts since I haven't stopped playing it since I got it.
Is white knight Chronicles any good? I've seen it numerous times and it interested me when it wasn't already out, but now the reviews of people and reviewers alike have kind of warned me off it.
Any apt and quick way you could describe what it's like?

The best RPG is obviously Morrowind.
Seconded - Oblivion was like it's prettier sister but then you swiftly find that other than the nice body she as thick as two short planks.

Morrowind had an immersion factor that was really quite brilliant add on to that a main quest that was truely epic and you have yourself a great RPG.
I would almost agree with the Elder Scrolls series as a whole if not for the daffy leveling system. Also Morrowind and Oblivion lacked any sort of badass factor which for me is a big deal. It's nice to actually work towards something. You get stronger so slowly in both games, plus the enemies scale in Oblivion. Not to mention there's only about 7 pieces of equipment available total between the two games. I can appreciate subtlety but common give me something. I played oblivion as level 1 the whole time and just never slept and it was more fun. With all that said I still love both games.

I'm gonna say you really can't pick one, because RPGs can be so different. IMO, there are a great number of titles that could be called the best, but they are so varied that it's impossible to pick just one.
yeah basically this, there are lots of different companies that go for different styles and strongpoints, depending on what people are looking for, so its hard to nail it down, some people love open world that takes 500+ hours for one playthrough, while others like a well developed character set and plot to drive it, while some just have that amazing of a stat/leveling system

well im a bioware lover, so kotor will always be number one in my heart, but i have greatly enjoyed the ff series and oblivion is good for some fun here and there

diablo II was fun.....WITH FRIENDS, that game was incredibly boring and so repetitive by yourself, good god, i hated the thing at first till my friends got me to go online with them, so i dont know if i can really put that in as a great rpg, because it just consisted of rushing like usain bolt to level like 35 then botting and pvp's and cow levels
