I'm going to be getting my gun permit soon. My mom has Civil War era rifles that she inherited from her father. My step-dad has a couple old guns as well. They're very cool.

Actually, since I'll be in the market for a handgun soon--any suggestions?

That depends, what calibre handgun are you looking for?

Also depends on what you're looking for in a handgun. Concealed carry tend to go with smaller frame compacts (they're easier to conceal), if you just want to plink at targets, you might go with what's got the cheapest ammunition, or the one that's most fun to pull the trigger for (And as far as I'm concerned, recoil = fun, seems to be the case with rifles. =D)

Speaking of Rifles, I found an awesomely funny answer to the AR vs AK debate!

There's a lot to read, but it's OH so worth it! An unbiased look at the AK, the AR, and the Mosin Nagant. Enjoy!

I really like my SAKO 7,62x53 hunting rifle. Solid, powerful and dead accurate. Also a thing of beauty.
In the near furure I'm gonig to get a SAKO TRG. Most likely in .377 Lapua. Or Tikka 3 tactical.

Ironically, I'm actually buying an SKS (Yugoslavian M59/66) this week, and putting money down on a Mosin Nagant.

I had been looking for a gun that shoots 7.62x39, but I didn't want to get an AK-47, so when I found an SKS I just couldn't put it down.

My uncle bought a Mosin Nagant a few months ago and he's been telling me to buy one ever since.

I love my Brazilian M9 knockoff. Must have put over 1000 rounds through it, never had a single problem.

I don't blame him, it's a FUN, FUN rifle. We've only put hmm... maybe 100 rounds through it since we got it, haven't had any issues so far (Other than occasionally flinging hot brass at people within 20 feet of you, which is mostly just entertaining and not an actual issue). It's comfy, it blows the crap out of the berm behind the targets, and if you go from that to an AR, it makes the AR feel like a .22 =D

What's the trigger pull like on that? I've heard horror stories of ridiculously long pulls...

Screw you and your gun owners only thread, I will post here in any case! The only reason I don't own one is cause I am Australian and the hoops you have to jump through and limitations are horrid. One day, oooone day, I will own one of these babies:

For those who do not know that is a Russian speciality rifle, the Vychlop. It was designed to offer greater penetration at maximum range while still being completely suppressed. Firing a specialised 12.7 round it has enough force to punch through a car, modern rifle resistant armour or any other heavy material defence. Yet it is completely suppressed, which means it will hard to detect the location of the shooter till it is too late. It boosts a 1 MOA, making it more then accurate enough for any military sharp shooting even though there are more accurate systems out there.

The only down side of this type or rifle is it has about half the range of a standard sniper rifle. As most battles take place in only a few hundreds of meters, this really isn't a problem in my eyes. The suppressed nature, high deal of accuracy and maintaining penetrative power all make up for this lack of range.

As for guns I have around the house? They are not mine but someone I live with who had a licence before the bullshit regulations came into place. As per law they are both are bolt actions and I consider them nothing more then show pieces as they have too little maintenance for me to trust. One is just a bolt action .22, nothing at all special, while the other is a beautiful Enfield which saw action in WW2. I quite like that gun even if I wouldn't trust it not to explode in my hands cause last time it probably saw cleaning was during WW2!

I shall not say what other guns he can get his hands on but refuses to keep in his possession... let's just say it isn't up to regulations seeing it is a semi and not bolt action. I do like the feel of this gun, though I have not yet had the pleasure of shooting it and wonder how long till it too rusts into nothing more then something you hang over the fireplace.... goddess around, how do you teach someone to maintain their toys?! Oh and yes again, semi's are illegal down here.

A passing thought:
Am I the only one who finds the old time leaver action rifles to be somehow sexy?
Or, for that matter, any picture of a petite woman holding a full sized military rifle?

I may end up getting a P90 just to have, even if I think it's a crap gun by a crap company. I'm an HK fan boy. =p
What makes the P90 a crap gun and why is FNH a crap company? The P90 is primarily used for counter terrorism/VIP protection by 31 countries world wide including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, U.K, and the US. FNH is responsible for the Browning High Power, the first pistol to use the short recoil action on a link-less barrel, which nearly all modern handguns are based off of (including the USP). Today FNH manufactures 70% of the small arms used by the US military, from M4s to M2s, and also owns both WInchester and Browning. Recently the FNH SCAR-L out performed the HK 416 in the SOF Combat Assault Rifle trails and has already started replacing M4s in SOF. Unlike HK, FNH doesn't hate civilians. In addition to the PS90 and FS2000, they released the civilian friendly SCAR 16S. HK has no intention of releasing a civilian version of the XM8, G36, or MP7. HK is going to release the civilian version of the 416 (a gas piston AR-15 w/ an HK sticker on it) but they have designed it to be incompatible with standard AR-15 lowers.... so the only way to use it is to buy the entire $3500 rifle. I also forgot to mention the fact the FNP series of handguns are on par with USPs in every aspect, FOR HALF THE FUCKING PRICE.

You may love HK, but HK thinks you suck and hates you

http://larrycorreia.wordpress.com/2007/10/09/hk-because-you-suck-and-we-hate-you/
I've got no illusions as to HKs civilian 'customer service'. I just prefer the great majority of their firearms. Like I said in my previous post "...I think it's a crap gun from a crap company." Think = opinion, and opinions, for whatever reason, are hardly going to be similar in every person you talk to. It's an irrational dislike, and I'm unsure as to why you're so butt-hurt over it. o_O

Almost as bad as the AK VS AR fanboys.
Wow, thank you both for the insight. I'm still interested in the p90, and after reading these posts its nice to hear some more dialog on them. From that I understand the p90 civilian model is the ps90. While I'm no gun nut but the only change is a longer barrel (I believe 6" longer or there about). Also the proprietary ammo (armor piercing bullets) are not available to civilians, giving the gun harder recoil. Other then that I dont know of any differences. Please tell me if you know, thank you.

Ah, don't blame you. MP5's are incredibly comfy. Like, incredibly comfy. If you have the full stock on it (instead of retractable), you can quite easily fall asleep curled up with one on the couch. I know, I've done it before.

I'm less a fan of lever actions than bolt, but I do agree.

And I know she might not be petite, per se, but hey, here's a sexy woman with a lever action Winchester. =D

The changes between the PS90 and the P90 are barrel length (You're correct, it's a 6" difference.), magazine size (While the PS90 can accept the standard 50 round magazines, they're only sold with 10 or 30 round magazines.), and the removal of automatic fire.

Rounds that are available to civilians are the lead-free (for range shooting, or shooting anywhere one may be worried about lead contamination), blanks, and the sporting round.

As for a higher recoil in the rounds available vs the duty rounds... That I really can't tell you. What I CAN tell you, however, is that it's a P90. You can shoot it on full auto with relatively decent control with your off hand at full extension. Recoil is NOT an issue. :p

My favorite of what I own is my Bushmaster A2-AR-15 M4 carbine. It is fun to shoot. They make a .22 LR conversion kit I have yet to purchase. It has asbsolutely been functionally reliable, although as a civilian I do not put it through the abuse the military version goes through.

When I go shooting with friends everyone wants to try it and when they do they, all grin from ear to ear at the experience.

Factory ammo is expensive compared to handgun ammo. Because of this I do not shoot it as often as I would like to.

The weapon I own that is most often shot would be my Sig Pro 2022 in .40S&W. It has proven itself 100% reliable regardless of ammo I used or even cleanliness after prolonged shooting. I shoot it very accurately within handgun combat range 75yrd max.

The only other handgun I shoot more accurately is my old Beretta 96FS in .40S&W. I have been told I am scary precise with it.

I'm happy to say that I finally got my SKS (Yugo M59/66).

It took me about 2 hours to get all the cosmaline out of it, but field-stripping it was easy and gave me a chance to get to know the gun inside and out. I've only put 50 rounds through it so far, and I can't wait wait to get down to the range and test it out on the 100-yard targets.

I'm very happy with it, but I still plan on buying a Nagant sometime in the next few weeks, when I can scrape up the money for it.

Eventually, I hope to build a "Modernized" SKS with rails and possibly detectable magazines, but state laws are proving to be more complicated then I thought (Nearly f***ing indecipherable).

Ah, yeah, those can be a pain. I would suggest finding friends in your local law enforcement agency (it seems to be working well enough for my brother.).

I own a Benelli Nova pump.

http://www.gunreports.com/media/newspics/selector/BENELLI_NOVA_PUMP_0707-1_1.jpg

The next one I'm likely to get is a Glock .45. I'd feel most comfortable with a M4 variant because that is what I am used to shooting.

I've had the pleasure of firing the .50cal machine gun, the .50 cal sniper, the M-249B, the SAW, and the M203 grenade launcher.
