3. Assasin's Creed 2 doesn't need servers to run.
The PC version does. Along with Settlers 7 and Splinter Cell: Conviction.
I was talking about the xbox 360 version
No, you were responding to this:

I imagine in 10 years or so we'll hear about how Assasin's Creed 2's support servers are going offline and nobody will be able to play their copy of AC2 anymore. Strictly speaking I feel that if I bought a copy of a game, I have the right to just up and play it online 10 years later on an old machine if I get the hankering.
You may have been thinking about the 360 version when you posted, but the subject and what you replied to were talking about the PC version.

If Therumancer comes in here and says, "no, I was talking about the 360" then I'll stand corrected.
Yes, but the topic is about mircosoft shutting down the servers on the xbox, not the servers on their pc games.

I tend to be a space cadet at times to be entirely honest. My concern is over the situation in general, and the simple fact that they are killing the multiplayer servers for a game that people still play. Most of my ranting however has nothing to do with a specific platform.

I used Assasin's Creed 2 as an example due to it's reliance on a constant Internet connection, if Ubisoft chose to stop supporting the online components required to make it run, a lot of people would effectively lose their games.

AC2 is simply a more extreme version of what is going on with Halo 2, since Halo 2 is simply losing it's multiplayer functionality (albiet that is the point of the game for those who play it), where versions of AC2 that require a constant internet connection will be totally non functional.

That much I know. What Therumancer was thinking? I've no idea... well, I kinda do. Halo 2 was dependent on xbox live for multiplayer, so that's gone now, aside from, you know the stuff. What happens in 2015 when Ubisoft decides they don't want to keep paying so people can play AssCreed2? Everyone who bought it legitimately is screwed. Or, worse, when they release Settlers 8 next year, will they cut off support for Settlers 7 because clearly everyone will simply upgrade? It's a sorta legitimate and related argument, even if he was going off topic. But, yeah, if Hellgate had lacked a single player build, I'd have been screwed out of that game by now....

I'm sure it was a very pretty smelling fire. I can certainly understand being slightly scared/cautious with electrical goods...you don't forget the smell of the burning plastic, or the panic involved when trying to figure out how you're going to get the burning plug out of the wall socket.
Why does burning plastic smell so bad, its truely pungent.

Electricity is a bit like...a tiger, it's awesome! But it also demands a certain amount of fear and respect.
i just laughed so hard I got a headache, excellent analogy, electricity will eat your face.

If only this could happen to Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. No one plays that game anymore yet it's possible to logon to the Versus Multiplayer mode.

Institutionalized is the word you're looking for, and I agree.

Ha, good for them.

This just goes to show though, with many games no longer offering lan or split-screen multiplayer, and only having online for it, companies get to force you into a new game or new system if you want to go beyond the single player campaign if you go through your library in the future.

Meh at least they still have split screen/single player.
MMO's closing is a fairly common occurence and nothing remains when that happens.

I wholeheartedly support the few that remain, stand strong against the closure of online games everywhere! Viva la resistance!

Unusual, imagine if after 6 years or so your DVD collection just wouldn't play anymore.

I think they should have offered up private server use for dedicated players, I suppose they could always get the Windows copy.

They're still playing . They are now down to 19. You can see them on one or both streams at http://www.justin.tv/z0mbiestench or http://www.justin.tv/xxbookerdxx

You won't see them online on Bungie because Microsoft cut their feed to the original xbox games so they have no way of seeing who is on now. For the haters on here, they will quit when the beta reach comes out if not sooner.

..sorry OT!, They finally logged off, shine on you crazy diamonds, if I was a Bungie employee I'd take it as a huge compliment from what they did.

You know, you can still play games online even now. You just have to take 5 minutes to do a Google search and you can find other ways that work. No reason to be a jerk about it, although I feel their pain. My original Xbox is probably my favorite gaming console right now, and it sucks having things like the UC2 DLC closed off forever because all the system's online capabilities are controlled by a single company, rather than each game dev running their own servers.

They may fall one after the other in the series but they are VASTLY different. I actually preferred the way that the Matchmaking was done on Halo 2 over Halo 3. The way the maps were laid out. The weapons. You name it I thought Halo 2 was better than Halo 3 in every aspect especially story line. Yeah Halo 3 closed the story but Halo 2 was actually unique and not a rehash of Halo 1 on a different ring.
Well I read an article which claimed that Halo 3 was actually supposed to be the second half of Halo 2, which is why half of the plot carried directly over, hence making Halo 3's plot seem pale in comparison because it was supposed to wrapping up Halo 2's plot. But as I have never played Halo 2 (unless I gt the PC port at some stage), then I am not entirely sure about most of the finer details between the two games.
That is true I heard the same thing but they could of made the story line SO much better than they did with 3. They should of at least tried to get something new into the mix rather than throw back in Halo 1 with the story line finish for Halo 2.
I can always agree with that. I hate when games just recycle the same plot for the sake of keeping the fans happy and saving on writers.

Aw, bless! This is awesome! This honestly warmed my heart a little bit. :) I'm not really into Halo, but still, I can relate to this, and I think it's fantastic to see that they MIGHT actually get to end it on their own terms.

I don't understand those "what a bunch of idiot's" comments. Apparently, Halo 2 multi is their favorite game. Suddenly, they heard that they could not play it anymore, but they found a way to enjoy their favorite game a little bit longer. What's so stupid in it? If you know, something you love will be lost forever, and you have an occasion to savor it for a bit longer, then why not take the chance? I would do exactly the same thing, if I would care about Halo 2 in any way.
