Has an NPC teammate ever saved the day for you?

Now I am genuinely interested in your anecdotes of a time when you thought all was lost - either you hadn't saved in too long, you just don't want to redo a section, etc... - when one of your generally useless teammates or even a random npc saved your ass.

Does it happen?

Doesn't happen often, but once an NPC in fallout (some "wastelander": no one important) walked in front of a missile that was headed for me. The results were as hilarious as they were tragic.

I remember that in Kane and Lynch, it was better to play with only npcs. At least in the demo. If you played co-op, only your coop partner could heal you. With only npcs, any npc can heal you. I just randomly remembered that.

Raine actually has pretty good AI in Tales of Symphonia...which is fantastic, since she's the primary healer. Saved my ass more often than I can count, after bouts of bad luck made her the only one left standing.

That reminded me of something in RDR multiplayer. For some reason, allies would legitimately run in front of my bullets. I would be about to shoot an enemy in the face, and and ally would just to "CHAERG!" and run stop the bullet with their face. And then try to kill me.

The funny thing was that she was...kinda...gone. Like, it literaaly vaporized her (well, sorta, I know there were still...pieces, lying around). The sad thing was that we couldn't have a funeral...[sub]sniff[/sub]

Just once from memory...Kat in halo reach dove away from a grenade and into a plasma that was about to hit me...though that was more an accident while saving herself than her helping me...

Ha, that reminds me of a Red Dead miracle. In RDR i was surrounded by a pack of wolves after a pretty epic gun fight and i was going to die, but a random guy getting chased by wolves ran by and my attackers left me to go after that poor bastard.

A friend of mine and I were playing Halo 2 years ago, and we were goofing off in one of the Arbiter levels on Heroic. Neither of us were particularly pro at gaming, so it was a challenge for us. But somehow, despite the difficulty level, a single Hunter ally NPC stayed alive as far as he could follow and even saved my stoic alien butt twice. Not that there's much of a consequence to dying in Halo co-op, but it was downright surprising to see a giant green explosion take out the bad guy lunging for you.

And if you aren't familiar with Halo NPCs, rarely do more than two or three of the misc ally NPCs make it to the end of the level on Normal difficulty unless you consciously babysit them. On heroic? They drop like flies.

I remember an unfortunate moment with the explosive rifle in Undead Nightmare. There was a person being attacked by a zombie, and I shot the zombie. With the Explosive rifle. At close range. With low health. There was no survivors.

I've had a car take a rocket for me in GTA IV before, but not to many other instences come to mind, especially in those kinda games. Except the 'stuipd' Cops. There's always one car in the bunch that are chasing you that just seem to TRY to screw it all up.

I know my ass has been saved by friendly NPCs, but I can't remember any moments when it happened.

Navi, it's because I listened to her I never forgot where I was suppose to go.

Now on a serious note, most of the companions from new vegas deserve an award for actually being useful.

(Total War: Shogun 2) I was playing as the Chosokabe clan, my ally was the Hattori, and I was getting stomped by the Oda who were defending their last castle by attacking me when I entered the province. Which by then I was low on soldiers since I tried to blitzkrieg my way with a massive army through about 6 different provinces/castles in a row. My A.I. teammate (LUCKILY was close enough to get dragged into the battle) somehow managed to successfully flank the enemy and deliver a charge of Katana samurai and Spear samurai that caused a chain rout of the enemy army when I was just MEEEERE seconds away from doing so myself.

Does it count if a little sister from bioshock 2 happened to glitch and never get disturbed by nearby splicers, thereby making them easy targets?

Actually, Both Fallout 3 and New Vegas had solid companions. Charon in hellfire armor with his standard shotgun, pretty much epic badass all around. Then once you start hitting the later teen levels, everyone gets fairly tough to kill, and if you cheat and get Fawkes, Charon, and Dogmeat in your party together.... well basically you will never be allowed to kill anything yourself again. I went to kill the Evergreen Mills mutant after finishing off the last raider, only to find they'd shredded it ages before. New Vegas... Arcade is one scary, scary gay man.

the story NPCs in Red Dead can earn their keep.

Also, on Pillar of Autumn, Emile managed to sneak attack the last brute (the wraith area) before he was able to stab me in the face with a spiker. Hooray for berserk melee AI!

the only npcs that have ever been super helpful are the cpu controlled team mates in l4D

I suppose alistar from dragonage was helpful when he wasnt blundering into traps

other than them the rest are all morons though they are at times hilarious

like once while playing ghostbusters wii my 2 npc teamates managed to get stuck in a doorway till I threw a battrey at them XD

Once in Saints Row 2 and MANY times in Rainbow Six Vegas 2.

In SR2 I was out of ammo and switching guns with a rocket guy aiming at me and I was low on health, suddenly I hear a shotgun and he rag-dolls. Emperor bless the Police! lol
