It's because there are a lot of idiots who make the news for retarded things while the good people in this world usually go unnoticed. That's why I think this happens. Though I personally like humanity.

I'd be amazed to find a 13 year old kid that knows what true misanthropology is, let alone claim to advocate it!

Simply saying I hate the people and the world doesn't make you a misanthrope. That's just the narrow view of a few angsty teenagers. Of course they usually grow out of it. Usually about the same time they find a women (or a man)...

Misanthropy is a generalized dislike, distrust, disgust, contempt and hatred of the human species, human nature, or society. A misanthrope is someone who holds those views and feelings. The word's origin is from Greek words μῖσος (misos, "hatred") and ἄνθρωπος (anthrōpos, "man, human being"). It can be considered a form of speciesism or a discrimination based on species.

So clearly, you are wrong. While you might doubt the sincerity of some people's professed misanthropy, you still have a rather pesky burden of proof to illustrate that these so called "angsty teenagers" aren't being sincere with their opinions when they claim to hate mankind. And if you can't fulfill that burden of proof, then these "angsty teenagers" will, by default, be misanthropes until proven otherwise...

I'm 30 and I still think that humanity is "just a virus with shoes" - Bill Hicks

Seriously, I can't stand these walking fleshbags (myself included) but have not the resources or devotion to enslave or destroy the human race, so I just sit back and watch it slowly decline instead of rushing the inevitable.

I think I hate humans as matter of principle, lots of people do lots of stupid shit and worse shit comes of it.
I'll agree that humans are capable of doing great things, but lots (not all) of those great things end up destroying something else... like nature, and the planet in general

But it's so trendy to hate people! I guess I don't like most people, but humanity in general, well, it's the best we've got, and not all people are bad. Saying 'I hate people' just seems petty and stupid to me. It's the kind of statement that doesn't make much sense after you probe further.

I love Humanity. Terrans have so much potential.
It is people I hate. The mindless, unwashed masses. People are assholes. People are stupid. People are pretty much anything negative. Worthless.
A person, however, is valuable. A person is smart. A person is charismatic. I love humanity. I love persons. I hate people.

No, I am telling you the average 13 year old kid who declares himself a true misanthrope is extremely unlikely to have experienced enough of the world or of humanity to actually develop the feelings and commitment to the ideal of a concept such as Misanthropy. If you are saying that the *average* 13 year old kid is making a qualified and reasonable justification for such a belief then you are talking about an extremely small amount so called "misanthropes".

The "burden of proof" argument has nothing to do with it. Otherwise I could quite happily say "I'm a racing car driver" because I once drove a car in a race now this is true unless you can prove me wrong. Or that "I'm a mortician" because I once dissected a frog and this is true unless you can prove me wrong. As a 13 year old kid who thinks they hate the world, they might have misanthropical ideas and thoughts but that is a far cry from actually understanding the implications and sheer complexity of those ideas to the point they could prove themselves to be a true misanthrope... Don't kid yourself, the thought of being seen as misanthropical, for some reason, is desirable by those teenagers looking for something to give their pissy mood swings and attitude problems any kind of validity. Any self respecting misanthropical institute (if one even existed) would be insulted to have such a person count themselves amongst them.

Basically i'm saying it's one thing to know the path but to walk it is another thing completely. Besides if humanity is that bad, why not simply kill yourself for the sake of your own ideal... I bet that 13 year old kid doesn't reach that conclusion anytime soon.

People generalise. They see greed, shallowness, injustice and whatnot, and it is easy to simply apply these things to everyone they have not met.

"Everyone i don't know is an asshole"

Wow, the non-misanthropes in this thread are really pathetic. Stop trying to out-edge the edgy kids, you're not fucking fooling anyone here.

I'm gonna stop kidding myself here and just say that I utterly despise them. No, I don't care what you say, you're just as bad as all the kids here, if not worse.

Yes, there have been people that were good to me, quite a lot actually, and I still adore and respect them, but there were so many more that were just complete and utter douchebags.

On a side note, the "bawww faith in humanity" people can just go away.

Some people just don't like others, too.
I don't like people all that much, for instance, but I like to think that I have good enough manners that I can appreciate that as being my problem and not everyone else's.

So maybe it just takes growing up to have enough manners to keep your dislike of humanity to yourself?

I would like to say my piece, feel free to rebut at will, i shall not argue.

as of today i am one month shy of being 26 and i would consider myself a misanthrope, perhaps this is because i have always been on the outside of what is "cool" or "socially celebrated" but the point is it was with rare occasion that i did something because it was "cool" as i figured by the time i achieved it, the standard would have changed.

I do not think myself about other groups or majorities, there are individuals i dislike and in a manor i find to be so very human, i justify it by thinking i am better, smarter ect. that being said i love meeting new people, so many individuals amaze and inspire me. I am fully aware that i am a part of the problem and it shames me and at times disgusts me that i cannot give up what i have to improve the lives of others. I am not smarter than the average man or woman

I am currently studying Community Services work, it is my hope to be a case worker or counsellor. I hope to help people, working in an underfunded and often ignored part of society. i will not give you arguments as to why i am not selfish, because if i could identify a selfless act, it would be nullified by my attempt to call attention to it here.

I have appreciated and admired great works of art, architecture, sculpture, music, film, ect. as well as generosities and philanthropic acts, i think everyone working to help clean the oil spill in the gulf, anyone who works to help those starving (in 3rd world countries or advanced western civilisations) are doing genuinely fantastic things.

i make these points not in a poor attempt to be, seem, or feel superior, merely to address some of the state made about what misanthropes are. i don't want to make quotes and point fingers and create further segregation.

i just tend to feel that put a decision to the masses and at least 7 times out of ten the majority will choose the most stupid, violent, destructive or barbaric option. humans are equipped to hate, few are above it. many here have displayed a hate of those who hate humanity as a whole and they are free to do so, so if i can accept you having your view and welcome it, is it possible that you can accept me having my view?

Thank you to anyone who chose to read all of this and as i stated at the start, responses are welcome.

I love the positive aspects of humanity and hate the negative aspects of humanity. I think pretty much everyone in my province feels this way.

Love > Hate

Peace > War

We have the amazing capacity to make this world a harmonious, peaceful realm. On the other side of the coin, we could always have a second dark age, similar to what happened after Rome's fall.

It is up to us what the future will bring. I am optimistic about the future but I'm under no illusions. We have a long way to go. But, we certainly could be quite worse.

Also, my hatred of a few individuals in the massive human population of our planet cannot even begin to convince me to hate the entire group.

However, I wouldn't mind if some Vulcan's beamed me up for a month or two. I'd probably want to come back though as I love Earth and many of the people who live here.
