It was a Mayan myth that the world ends, and is reborn, in cycles.
The end of the Mayan calendar is the end of this cycle, that's why it is a prediction that the world will end on that day.

Of course there is no actual reason to believe that prediction, just like there's no reason to believe the predictions of any religion, but people have this tenancy to believe anything they think sounds cool.
Technically it wouldn't be the end of the world anyway since the Mayans' world cycle had two human survive each time that repopulate the earth. That in itself is one of the many ridiculous aspects of this myth.

If in 2012 there's a great earthquake that kills nearly everyone, I will personally give each of you £1000...

If the world really does end in 2012, all the destruction and devastation will be second in size only to the irony. And the people who spend their last breaths saying 'i told you so'

I thought the Mayans were all killed in Alien vs. Predator. They looked Mayan anyway. But I've never met a Mayan.

In fact, new theory - The Mayans did this just to mess with our heads, they're sitting in their heaven looking down on us and laughing. It's all just the ancient equivalent of a practical joke gone too far.

If the world does end in 2012, it will be a coincidence.

Well, the Mayans still exist, their civilization just ended...

Yeah they're the ones spreading the rumors to everyone they meet. Keeping the joke alive. You'll see, afterwards they'll come forward and admit it, and they'll get a medal or something.

Wrong. The Mayans who started this rumour were doing it just to scare people, to spread panic and terror, because they thought it would be a laugh. When the conquistodors arrived they hid, biding their time until the joke was ready to be sprung. With 2012 only a few years away they recently re-emerged.

It's called 4chan now.

Ugh...I've said it before and I'll say it again:

All the 2012 shit has been misread. It isn't the end of the world they are predicting. December 21st, 2012 is when Duke Nukem Forever finally comes out.
And the World will end in a cloud of awesome.

The LHC one was just a bunch of idiots screaming at the mention of black holes and ignoring what the whole thing entailed as well as the fundamental idea of black holes. Also religious nut jobs threatening to kill scientists before the destroy the world. The LHC does in fact present no danger at all.
I've been wondering how anyone can argue that black holes could be created... Where the hell would the required mass come from? How can you create a black hole without mass?
That's all perfectly possible and within the bounds of modern physics, enormous amounts of mass is what is required for their natural creation, bear in mind this is a byproduct of an artificial process. As you say, no great mass, and without mass, the newly created black hole would have a piffling gravitational effect on any mass surrounding it, thus removing any paranoid danger of it sucking up the world.

I don't see why the Mayan calendar is connected to the end of the world. So course is ends. The Mayans were wiped off the map. How can they finish it?

/Aimed at the superstituous people, not the OP.

But yes, the 2012 stuff is just a fad, like Y2K, the Cold War using nukes, the Plauge in the Middle Ages, etc, etc. The benefit? I can rub it in peoples faces once 2013 comes around. That will be fun.
The plague was real...
The idea of extinction from the plauge was a fad, not the plauge itself.

This is all too amusing to me, as on 6/6/06 I went to see the Omen (really funny flick, just see it w/friends/drunk), and I'm still here... But yeah, the Mayan Calender has been used on several occasions to predict the END, as has the good book. The other theories are funny though!

Similar to our own, the Mayan calendar is based on celestial events. Our calendar has months for moon cycles and years for solar cycles. But the Mayans went beyond that and included Galactic cycles. The big date in 2012 is the completion of this large cycle, and after that the calendar resets. So one argument is to say that people get all whipped out of shape because the end of this long cycle calendar plays on their fears and insecurities, and their minds start to brainstorm for possible disaster, and they find evidence to support their brainstorms. Certainly there are people that go way to far. But are you so close minded that you've completely shut out any possible implications? I haven't decided, nor can any of us truly decide. There is not enough data.

What will happen in 2012 at the end of the cycle, is that all the planets of the solar system will be aligned with the center of our galaxy. Can you imagine what could happen?... You learned in elementary school that it is the gravitational pull of the moon that effects the tide cycles of the seas, right? Well don't you think there will be much stronger gravitational pulls if all the planets of the solar system line up with the center of the galaxy? Are you predicting NO EFFECT? Really?!

It's one thing for you to make fun of all the conspiracy tards. They're easy to put down. But now that you've done that, is it the end of the story? Do you feel safe now? Are you so good at physics that you can predict the effects of the rare gravitational forces that will exist during this time? It only happens about every 3500 years. There have been disasters. Civilations have been lost to disaster, it's a scientific fact. And none of the conspiracy tards' predictions have come to pass during a rare period such as this. Are you casting the first stone because of your superior intellect? Have you really done the math?

Let's talk about what we do know... Do you know why the Earth is not damaged by the solar winds?...

The only true end to the wor;d that I choose to believe is when the 2 solar systems crash into each other. That or the Sun dies out. But that's not for another 1,000 years or so.

Also, the world probably won't end. Hopefully. ..Please stop the nukes.
Yeah, if anyone's going to destroy humanity it's going to be humanity. Oh us and our silly weapons.

Since the beginning of space time - or at least the space year 2005, as I recall, I have been hearing prediction after prediction about how the APOCALYPSE IS NIGH, especially on one particular day.

December 21st, 2012.

The world is going to end that day, is it? Well, let's look at it scientifically. The various theories are as follows

The Mayan Calender
The main argument is the Mayan Calender. What is the Long Count? Well, it's a part of the Mayan Calender that goes on and on, well beyond their death. It has been around for millennium, and has always ended on the same day. It just happens to predict the end on that exact day. But here's the the thing. The Mayan Long Count doesn't mark that day as the end! The Mayan calender simply stops on that day. And what happens when one of our calenders end? Does the world end, or do we just get a new one? Even the philosopher who predicted the Mayan Long Counts in sections of 20 years didn't even say the Long Count ended then. It just restarts, as all calenders do.

All that said, how exactly does a really good calender prove the Mayans are smarter then us? Even if it did predict the end of the world. If New Horizons finds a Mayan Probe on Pluto, then I'll listen to what doom sayers have to say.
The last time one of these threads came around I had to do this, so here it goes.

The 2012 prophecy was a misinterpretation made of a Mayan scripture by José Argüelles that was popularized by a fictitious story. His calender, which predicted the apocalypse, varies from the traditional long count. Furthermore, the end of a is the more correct wording. We are currently living in the 4th world that the gods created. After 12/21/2012, the world shifts into the 5th world, or an age of enlightenment. The date would be traditionally celebrated as opposed to being feared.
