I think it's fantastic. I can't wait for the release date.

"Congratulations, Valve. In less the time it took you to create another dull, mediocre expansion pack to your original dull, mediocre game, motherfucking Duke Nukem Forever was released."
That doesn't make sense. Ignoring your wrong opinion on HL2 (I jest), there's never been any real confirmation that they're fully working on Ep. 3/HL3 and DNF has passed through around 5 iterations over 12 years.

It's not really "less than the time it took you to create another great game showing the unique benefits of gaming as a story-telling medium" since DNF has been being worked on for about 5 times as long - assuming HL3/Ep3 has been worked on since '07.
Good point.

I'll rephrase it. It's not as catchy this way, but I think it makes sense.

"Congratulations, Valve. In less the time it took for you to create another devastatingly average addition to your devastatingly average series, Duke Nukem Forever was taken by another company, redone, dated for release, and put on the market."

Still doesn't work.

I fail to believe Gearbox took the game and didn't re-use any assets from previous builds. And like I said, we don't know if/when Valve (have) started work (properly at least) on Ep. 3 yet.

Now that you've pointed it out, i'm rather amused.

I mean, valve fanboys are hilarious as it is. This makes it funnier.
Because a game that's been in production a lot longer is coming out before a game that's not been in production for as long (if at all for that matter)?

It takes a strange man to find hilarity in logic.
You misunderstand.

Valve fanboys when hearing of things like this tend to foam out the mouth. Well the bad ones anyways. I find the same hilarity with other fanboys
Most fanboys start foaming at the drop of a hat...
WOAH VALVE MADE HATS A DROP ITEM IN TF2?!?!?!?!?!?1
OMGWTBBQ!!!!!!!! *foams at mouth*

Absolutly nothing; Half Life 2: Episode 3 has been in development for around 3 years, presumable since the orange box was released, Duke nukem took 12. This isn't even ironic or any thing.

Interesting point to note.

Wonder if there'll be many in-game references in Duke Nukem Forever pertaining to the game's infamous development length...
Look up the first level journalists were shown... xD

On the first point, I can't imagine that Gearbox would take a great deal of assets from the original design unless they heavily modifed them. After all, just because a game was in development a long time doesn't necessarily mean that its design was particularly complex/solid/not in need of major renovation or scrapping. After all, we all saw how good the Xbox classic Galleon turned out to be with seven years of development under its belt.

On the second note, hasn't it already been stated by Mr. Newell himself (quite some time ago, I believe) that Half-Life 2: Episode 3 was indeed in development, but that it was taking so long because of the implimentation of sign language for one of the characters or somesuch?

tl;dr

Not a touche, but rather a parry.

They said they were looking into the sign-language thing, not that it was actively holding back. There wasn't confirmation that it was in full development either. It could still be in pre-production for all we know.

Consideribng that Duke Nukem Forever took 20 years to develop, not that bad. We'll hopefully have Episode 3 by the end of the half-Decade.

If it's not Half Life 3, I'll kill Gabe Newell.
"Gabe Newell, commander in chief of the famous Valve developing team, was beaten to death today. He had just been leaving the stage after announcing plans for a new Left 4 Dead game and dropping hints about a third Portal game. Witnesses screamed when they saw a van break through the wall of the auditorium. A man emerged with a crowbar shouting "Half Life!" and started to hit Gabe repeatedly in the chest and head. After making one last swing, he jumped back into the van disappeared into the night. The van was later..."

OT: That isn't really surprising. Valve is ridiculously slow normally. I am pumped about the game coming out though. I will probably buy it simply out of curiosity.

God forbid that last statement is true. A period of pre-production this damn long for an IP this established just doesn't seem right.

Also, I just realized that in my previous response I had two sentences, back to back, begin with "after all." This hurts me in ways I can't describe. The Grammar Naziism in my genetic code is in an uproar.

You know what I find hilarious? That people assume one of two things (both illogical and rather stupid) about Valve. Either:

1: That Valve only makes Half-Life and are wasting time or being "lazy" by making a series of games in the intervening years, such as Portal and Left 4 Dead, or working to maintain Steam , create DLC, and update Source.

2: That Valve isn't in the process of making Episode 3/Half-Life 3 but is instead ignoring the project all together.

These arguments aren't put towards companies like, say, Bungie or Epic Games. Why? Because those companies have one or two primary game series, extremely rich publishers behind them, and are staffed by hundreds upon hundreds of designers and programmers. So, no one bats an eye when they take a year or two launch a game because that's all they expect from them. That's all they do. They work on one game series. Nothing else.

Valve has a grand total of two hundred fifty employees. That includes producers, legal staff, and even the janitorial staff. Ergo, they can be short-staffed quickly. And, seeing as they are always working on multiple titles, Source engine updates, DLC, and Steam...all at once, it takes time to finish projects. Hell, the original Portal had a design team totaling eight. Portal 2's team? Twenty eight.

So, let's see. Two hundred fifty, minus twenty eight. Hmm. Seems there's still quite a few programmers/designers left. Bearing this in mind, it would only make sense that they ARE in fact working on Episode 3, in some form or other. And, considering the development time, that they are likely making a full-fledged sequel. Almost certainly using a new, shinier version of Source. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt it.

As for the topic at hand, I don't really find it all that funny. Funny that the infamous vaporware that is Duke Nukem Forever is actually going to exist (and probably be as crappy as can be imagined), but not that it's coming out before Episode 3. Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for twelve to fifteen years. Episode 3 has been in development for three. Now, maybe my math is off, but I think you missed the rather sizable difference in those lengths of time. But then, I'm noticing most of the people in this thread who find it so funny are either fervent Valve haters or people that make it a point to troll around forums basing Half-Life, solely in an attempt to grief anyone that enjoyed the series. Just like the assholes that have been trolling around the Halo: Reach threads. Hating on the game even before it's out.

Yes, well that's assuming they started in '07. We're all making "best guesses" and assumptions about a company that constantly likes to surprise.

It just means Episode 3 will come out eventually. If Duke Nukem Forever can finally get released, everything can.
