I hate to be the one to say this, but I'm thinking that anything that promotes gaming as a mainstream acceptible pastime and helps to bring awareness and understanding of it to more people is a good thing for the industry, even if it is a sub-american idol reality show...
Your right in some respects, but the show itself doesn't accurately portray gaming at all - look at the games they play (Rock Band is a competitive game now...?), look at how overly dramatic they act when playing and look how idiotic they are making gamers look.

It may promote gaming as mainstream but its still giving off the wrong message.
Yeah you're right about that, and also most of those guys didn't look as geeky as most of the gamers I know :D

By the way I just saw your COD4 score in the leaderboards HOLY SHIT DUDE. You should be on that show to represent us instead!

LOL I wonder if this stupid crap is going to be sponsored by the people who made that lame razor blade for gamers.
I know the one you're talking about. "Put your game face on, THEN SHAVE IT THE FUCK OFF."

I think people are misunderstanding one thing - you're all saying they're not "real" gamers. They've won other competitions before this (it lists their achievements at different parts), so apparently they do have the skills. And as for their appearance, well, they're not fat pimply walking stereotypes, but they're not models either. And they probably have to be in fairly good shape to do the real life challenges.

You're all acting like this is a threat to our livelihood as gamers or something. I just think you need to relax, and just ignore it if you don't like it.
Consider that you watched it yourself and can speak from experience, yeah, I can respect that opinion. Sure, venting against the show isn't gonna do anything to stop it, but hey, at least it's a logical, unfeeling outlet to release pent-up frustration on, right?

I really don't see what the problem is here. Yes the show looks stupid, but no one is forcing you to watch it. Besides, it's a sign that gaming is becoming a mainstream activity, which is a good thing surely?

This afternoon they had a marathon on, so I watched it. It's actually pretty damn entertaining. Yeah yeah, call me a simpleton or whatever, but I actually enjoy some "reality" tv shows (who knows how real it actually is, but it's still fun). And one that pertains to gaming? Pretty sweet, I say.

And the second to last episode had some pretty cool challenges -

The remaining 6 players had to go through "The Gauntlet" - playing 3 games, but under odd conditions. The first was a race in Project Gotham Racing 4 while upside down. Then, Rock Band 2 "One Man Band" - playing guitar, and drums with their feet, using custom drum sets inlaid to the floor. And finally, a 9 hour Halo 3 deathmatch marathon. They had to stand the whole time, and they were tempted with food and money to walk away from their tv sets, leaving them open to attack by the other players. Pretty neat.
Only thing better would've been if the challenge ended the way Monty Python's "Upper Class Twit of the Year" contest ended. If you don't know, look it up.

I think every reality show is stupid -- in my opinion, this is as stupid as the modeling, the weight-losing, the best cook, etc., shows that are out there. Here's the thing: No matter how stupid you and I proclaim this idea is -- it's marketable. Why? Look at the demographic statistics -- it is appealing to a much more general audience rather than a targeted few. Also, there are those few (in what I'll call "this demographic of gamers") who may actually tune in and see it (whether it is curiosity or to plainly criticize). Bottom line: They have an audience and that's why they're running with it.

It's funny because I thought the trailer wouldn't be so bad -- however, it's just so damn corny =\.

Gaming is not a 'sport'. Gaming is gaming.

This is insulting.
one word. Korea.

also, i was pretty interested by the starcraft 2 battle reports, the commentary adds something to it and it is an awesome way for me to learn new strats for winning.
Ever watch one of their tournaments? When I was in Korea, a friend and I were going to actually stop by and watch since he lived not too far away from where it was being broadcasted. They love their Starcraft <3

Honestly I find watching people play video games equally as unfullfilling as watching people play a game of baseball or hockey or whatever. I'd rather play a game than watch people play it, and I also think its hilarious that we pay people millions of dollars to play games. If we're going to have reality shows about guys who beat each other up or people who sing songs and crap then why not video games.

*holds a random person* Hah! Oh I crack me up.

But yeah, I watched it from VG cats site and found it insulting too. I wonder if other groups get insulted about shows made about them? Example, do chefs find "Iron Chef" or "Hells Kitchen" insulting? Do fashion models find "Top Model" unrealistic? Do stupid drunken bimbos who are trying to marry for money find "Rock of Love"...oh wait, in that case, those are the contestants.

Edit: Oh wait, none of these examples holds any credibility, because reality shows aren't reality anyway. Ooooh, no spooon. There's a spork instead. *tries to bend spork with mind*

Oh, look, attractive hip 20-somethings doing stunts. It's Fear Factor.

Last I heard, real gamers were (median) on average 35-year-old working stiffs. But competitive gaming is laughable anyway, so what are you going to do?

Maybe we should sign up for this and teach those casual gamers what it means to be a GAMER! Halo 3, try COD 4 or Gears of War multi-player.
