Wait, didn't Sephiroth stab Cloud like that? Twice? Once when he was a regular old weak Midgar low ranking infantry-man, and Cloud just pulls the sword out of his chest and throws Sephiroth off the bridge, then again in Advent Children (unless you pretend that movie never happened) where he again pulls the sword out and performs his limit break.
Sephiroth stabbed Cloud, yes. Through his chest or shoulder.

It's irrelevant, though, since Aerith wasn't really stabbed by the masamune, but by a construct created from Jenova cells.

I refer you to the Random Battles flash video.
"Phoenix Downs will revive your party members, so they're very useful, Cloud! But you must be careful. They don't ALWAYS work....I'm looking at yoooou, Aeris!"

You are thinking about it incorrectly. Since Aries went off alone, she was the only character "in battle", she got ambushed by Sephiroth, as such he got the first turn. Even if he didn't ambush her, by the battle systems rules, his level was so much higher then her's, he would have automatically gotten the first turn.

His first strike was powerful enough to KO her, which is completely logical when you think about how low her defense is. Since there is nobody else in the party to revive her, game over - she is dead. It doesn't matter that there were people within viewing distance, they were not part of the battle party.

Really, its no different then any time in the game when everyone in your three person party dies. The other six characters not currently in your party were following you, and would logically have to be within viewing distance, but they can't do crap to help you out. It was a cut scene, used to create an emotional highlight, but still bound by the concepts and rules that the rest of the game followed.

And screw Aries, she was annoying anyway...

Doesn't matter how weak he is, a sword went through her body and stopped her heart. No amount of feathers will help that.

The phoenix down was designed to make gameplay not terrible. Thinking in a gameplay mindset during cutscenes and moments of storyline is going to cause problems in any game. I could watch the "Team Fortress 2: Meet the Spy" trailer and ask myself why a Pyro didn't just spycheck them all. Why didn't he? Because that would ruin the trailer. Why did Aeris die? Because it's part of the story. If you don't want to play a game because there's a sad moment, you're not going to find any fun games. Incidentally, I didn't like the game.

Off-Topic: Also, why would a phoenix have down feathers? It's a bird that's on fire, it doesn't need warming up.

Pheonix downs are really just to wake up knocked out people, they dont trully die.

She was dead, truelly dead, you really are thinking to much into the game to think these things.
so youre saying that a nuclear explosion only knocks someone out when their hp reaches 0? WHY THE HELL ARE PEOPLE SO AFRAID OF WORLD WAR 3 THEN??
Weel for one thing we arnt all slightley femanine ultra warriors with swords the sizes of our bodies. And whose saying im afraid of WW3, let it happen, im in Australia, nothing bad happens down here, we will be fine.
I agree, nothing bad ever happens in Australia. I agree with you so much that I think we should be friends. In a few months, we can play Left for Dead 2 together! (I am so sorry)

sir. i love you. this makes logical sense, without going into "it was his sword" or "it wsant a normal death, she wanted it to happen" and all that other bullshit. you actually combined the gameplay mechanics with the story mechanics, which is all i was looking for. they story is still stupid, since aeris went out on her own that added to a long list of characters doing the stupidest ideas in the history of the universe, but this makes it slightly more forgiveable. excellent post

although this does make me question why Tseng could survive a cut from Sephiroth and Aeris couldnt...

And no, it's not because I suck. I'm actually doing really well gameplay wise... It's just the story.

I'm not even going to bother putting a spoiler warning in this post, because if you've had anything to do with any sort of gaming within the past decade, you should already know what happens here.

Aeris dies. WHOMG! That in and of itself is retarded. I'll even forgive Sephiroth coming down and stabbing her just because he wants to be evil. Bad story telling, but I'll let it slide. But Aeris dies? Seriously? Everyones all mournful over that. Everyone keeps looking at her. Cloud picks her up and sets her off into the lake. Did nobody EVER hear of a phoenix down?? Or rather, since we're talking about a girl that can survive heated battles and nuclear blasts, Cure 3?? Since all that happened to her was that she was stabbed by a sword from a weak ass dude (yea I went there), her hp couldnt have possibly dropped to 0. But no. We must accept that fact that for a split second in the Final Fantasy universe, everyone forgot that phoenix downs and Cure3 existed in order to make one of the best characters of the game die off to show that you cant have an awesome team forever, or because SOMEONE has to die.

/endrant

anyway, anyone else feel this way or think these thoughts or at least something along these lines while playing FF7?
Jenova has a penis and so on and so forth.
Materia rocks have sex with themselves to create more materia, the entire world of FFVII seems to have hermaphroditic properties... We get it. the plot's retarded. We've all thought it, we all know it. Just shut up and enjoy the game for what it is. Also, Cure 3 doesn't bring people back to life :p
PS. one of the best characters of the game? Hardly ... M-M-M-MEGAFAIL!!!

It shames me every step of the way, seeing the obvious parts from FF6. I shall persevere, however.

I find the story very dry, though.

That's the part of the story you thought was bad? I thought the whole thing was bloody awful.

Sorry, had too... but yeah, I couldn't stand that game for a multitude of reasons, story being one of them. Maybe it's because I started it eleven years too late, but that wouldn't make sense, as I also tried Chrono Trigger/Cross for the first time then and I loved both of those.

That game is...pretty old, man.

But, I wasn't complaining. I hated Aeris.

I loved Cid Highwind. So, I was kinda happy to be rid of Aeris because I never used her. But, y'know, I was 12 when I played the game.

Hasn't anyone ever noticed that Aerith allowed herself to be killed on purpose?
In order to control the lifestream and save the world she needed to pray for Holy and join the lifestream... To join the lifestream, one must die.

Can't believe that no one has ever picked up on that.
You sir are correct. She technically did what Sephiroth's clone was planning to do by opening a wound in the planet.
Instead of wounding the planet itself she sacrificed her physical body, in order to become part of the lifestream and one with the planet.

once you use great gospel, you will always miss it =( and with her high MP, magic, and spirit, she made a great white mage and/or black mage. just have her in the back and have barret cover. its sad that you only really get to use great gospel like, once or twice ;.;

Before I get into the first comment, let me rant first in all caps. JAP RPGS IN GENERAL SUCK A HARD ONE AND I WOULD BADLY LIKE ALL THE HOURS I TOOK PLAYING FF7 AND ALL OF THE OTHER JRPGS IN GENERAL BACK AnD I AM NOW GLAD I DO NOT WASTE MY LIFE ON THAT GENRE OF CRAP. ALSO, YUGIOH SUCKS ASS AND ITS ONLY WORTH WATCHING IF IT HAS ABRIDGED IN THE TITLE.

------------------------------

There, after playing and absolutely loving Final Fantasy 3, I couldn't wait to play 7 as in my United States living brain, thats the next Final Fantasy released on a system. Well, I was completely disappointed with the game I gave up on both JRPGs as well as console systems in general but thats another rant.

Final Fantasy 3 was excellent and even the little things like music was absolutely spectacular. In fact, I often listen to "ripped" copies of a lot of the songs from that game. I enjoyed the game so much I broke the bank from my first job inspired checking account(Yes, I am older than you are, probably.) and bought FF7.

Yes, I was disappointed from the start but I slowly let it sink in, at this time I had no idea of the rapid change in Japanese culture nor their asinine way of "telling a story" in such blantanly stupid ways that are hardly coherient to understand (Case in point, Yugioh. What the hell do cards have to do with "saving the world" and where the hell are the police at?)

I"m tired and it is late morning and I haven't slept yet so I will cut this short.

Yes, my favorite character died on the first disk. I wish I knew ahead of time so I didn't build her up but I would have gladly gave the dark haired girl up instead as I never played her. Fenix Down, of course I have some as I tended to stock up on the damn things, so why couldn't I use it here but I could use it slighly earlier and later on when I fought the dude who killed her?

My next question isn't so much for Final Fantasy as it is for most of Japanese media in general, ARE THERE WOMEN IN THESE GAMES OR ARE THEY JUST FILLED WITH MOSTLY GIRLY MEN. As an older adult approching 30, I know how to find "FREE" internet porn and would rather watch it than partake in an aweful game "sex" act so onscreen BOOBS do nothing for me. However, I socialise and are married to a woman and I become accustom to being "straight". So, where are the EQUAL amount of women NPCs, this goes with the AWFUL cartoons as well? I am quite tired of girly men so can we outgrow that phase please.
Ungh where have you been? Did you even read the other posts?
Note to self: Don't attribute age to witty posts.

The several-hour final boss fight turned me off to the idea of playing it entirely. It's just gamebreakingly bad design philosophy at that point.
