Neon Genesis Evangelion, Death Note
Phew, those were some of my favorite animes that I tend to recommend, and if you didn't like NGE, well I doubt you will like anything.

Anyways, other suggestions are Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni and Elfen Lied, you might like them.

I'd recommend Haibane Renmei - it's one of my favourites.

I reject your challenge; given, you're going for realism in a multiverse of fantasy and oddities; you're not gonna like anime just because it's realistic, hell i like bleach, and i know none of that shit could even remotely possibly happen

Also; the ending of neon genesis evangelion was fucked the hell up; OH MY GOD, i had insomnia for a week after watching the ending (and it still disturbs me to this very day)

It's not that hard... Just go out and watch some random anime. Some obscure stuff.

Wait...

I didn't see Cowboy Bebop on that list... THE HELL!?

GO WATCH IT.

NOW.

I shouldn't even have to explain why... =_O'

sigh.....

Brother, you can't just say "make me like anime" and expect someone to come out of nowhere with a series that is so good that it makes you have an epiphany. you have to find your niche. you've only seen the big name animes, but the better ones are actually lesser known, at least in my opinion.

Take me for example: I'm a guy who likes action. Naruto, Bleach, Immortal Reign, Veritas, One Piece, Air Gear, these aren't anything new to me. My sister is in to shojo stuff, like Fruits Basket and VB Rose. We both have our own opinions and neither of us can figure out why we like the mangas we do. I can't recomend any Manga or anime in particular, but I can recomend this: search around MangaFox. They're a great place with tons of entries, and you can read up on anything that looks interesting to you.

Also, and I just thought of this, Check out the mangas for the following: Shaman King, +Anima, and Immortal Reign. They are brilliant in their own right. Btw, I think you'll find that the manga is always better than the anime. DON'T WATCH THE ANIME FOR SHAMAN KING.

Edit: I think I remember this really weird OVA called Pale Cacoon? only saw it once, and it was bizzare. Check that out.

What about just well told stories?

-Spice and Wolf. A pagan goddess wants to travel with a salesman in the 1800 europe. I'm gonna say it is at least 16+, but not because of violence, nudity or gore; there's none of that. I rate it mature because the main theme is economics and if it's hard for me to grasp fully, a kid will just change channel. A beautiful friendship story with a dash of supernatural. Very well told.

-Time of Eve. Robots gaining sentience, but what if instead of going Terminator on us, they just wanted to fit in? Another very well told story approaching themes like intolerance, discrimination and acceptance.

-Earth Girl Arjuna. Magical girl vs Pollution. Heavy ecological themes. You either like it or you don't, but I could sense influences from Spider-Man, like when Peter Parker has to let down his job, friends, dates and loved ones to hurry off to save the world. It's a touching love story with hard-to-swallow topics like unwanted pregnancy, infertility, and responsibilities. And Hot rainbow-colored girls. Hahaha!

I would say watch Cowboy bebop since thats the only one that comes to mind.

But really you're asking alot and missing the points of anime. Japan is a sexually suppressed country, and most girls are either eye candy or fan service. And which anime art style dont you like? There's alot out there, and it kinda helps to know what style of art you dont like and what you do.

You want realistic? OK. Planetes. Space Opera done -exceedingly- well. Look it up. I'd love to dare you to find anything more realistic than that.

I've gone into detail about this on so many other threads, one of which is actually still on the "hot threads" section as I post, so, in short, watch Claymore.

[sub]Nobody ever does, but I'll keep posting it XD[/sub]
I would but I'm already reading the manga, I'd recomend that by the way, also I second this, but would recomend the manga.

OT
I'd recomend Planetes, it's a twenty minuites in to the future Sci-Fi about a group of astronaughts that are tasked with retrieving debris that is orbiting earth, it's pretty decent if slow paced, pretty hard Sci-Fi too so no giant robots fighting with lightsabers, good charecters and exept for a few episodes it never gets too insane so it's not bad for those unused to most anime tropes.

Alternativly if you are seriously trying to likee anime:
FLCL & Pani Poni Dash
If you survive the madness that is these two series nothing anime throws at you will ever seem weired again, though I'd recomend FLCL to you anyway insanity incarnate but damn good all the same.

Hmm... to add to what everyone else said...

-Fist of the North Star (good old classic)
-Sakigake!! Otokojuku
-Slam Dunk
-Great Teacher Onizuka
-Project ARMS
-Hellsing (particularly the newer ones)
-Wolf's Rain
-Cromartie High School
-Gungrave (characters are REALLY big in this)
-Monster
-Darker Than Black
-The Skull Man
-Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
-Senkou no Night Raid

Hope that's a good start... though I'm not sure if all of those have official English releases, I'm from Japan.

I loved Seirei no Moribito for the combat, lots of good spear fighting in it. Unfortunately, anime trailers tend to suck so Ill show you a fight instead.

Here's one with a nice twisted sense of humor.

As for anime with good characters, there are plenty, just cant think of any that depressing atm. Maybe Ergo Proxy or the Girl who lept through time.

I know where your coming from. Theres ALOT I really dislike about anime but theres alot I like about it too, so you know what I did? I started writing my own, just to make it the exact sort of anime I would want to watch.

It helped.

Elfen lied is a very dark and is fairly grounded in reality

this is a very spoiler-heavy scene between two powerful physic creatures with invisible limbs.

Cowboy Bebop.

Its essentially an anime for anime haters. The only real issue you may have with it is Ed, but it shouldn't stop you from enjoying the series.

Its short, so it doesn't overstay its welcome.
It has great characters with great English dubs. I'd say its the only anime where I'd recommend watching it in English rather then Japanese.
Great story. Each episode is self-contained while there's a larger plot going on in the background. This means each episode is something entirely new, yet it still has a cohesive story.

Honestly, I can't believe you haven't tried it sooner.
