I don't know, in 99 nights it didn't bother me. You're kind of the one man army and you don't have to rely on your incompetent helpers. Besides, the more incompetent they get, the more kills for you.
But the plot was hardly explained and dialogue was beyond awful. When she kills a goblin child and her brother has a fit about it, what was that about? The battles were designed for an army vs army style clash and you have to do it on your own effectively. With a plot that bad it hardly seemed worth it. Also, for a majority of the missions, I had no idea where I was going or what I was meant to achieve. You just follow paths and kill stuff until you get another meaningless cutscene and get molested by a giant.
Yeah, I will not argue with any of that, but quite honestly, I didn't even the slightest plot element when I popped that game in. I expected me killing a lot of dudes and that's what the game delivered. To me, it was a great game. Exactly how I expected it, devoid of story yes, but totally expected too, and appreciated that way to some extent.
Besides, when you have whole armies on the screen at once, you should never expect great AI because it is basically devided by whatever number of peeps on screen. The more the dumber.
