Fargodog, and Razada, thanks for the imput, but I just don't see it. admittedly, the sparkly vamps is mildly disconserting, but on everything else I personally, don't see it.
Ok, I will sum up everything very simply.

People hate twilight for a few simple reasons

A) They loved Vampires before Twilight (The Darren Shan books got me through most of my teenage years) and now people think they like Twilight.
B) Connected to A), They can no longer publicly talk about Vampires without seeming to be sexually repressed morons
C) Vampires used to be awesome. Seriously. Drinking peoples blood. Running faster then cars. Turning into bats.
D) The books attack the nature of Vampire mythology without taking anything positive about it into account.
E) They do not fall into the "Teenage Female" demographic and yet they are constantly assaulted with Twilight despite having no interest in it.

F) And this is the big one. We have read real fantasy books. Better books. With characters who are believable, characters you can empathize with and a plot more complicated then a game of tic-tac-toe. Some of us have beloved authors who have failed to capture the media attention. Christ, George R. R. Martin is arguably much better then Tolkien. But tripe like Meyers stuff wins out.

There are probably more, I aint going to attack the fanbase, the hype, the fact that she is a mormon and this infects her writing like Herpes. Those are the reasons I hate Twilight and the reasons my close friends hate twilight.
700 internet points for the Darren Shan mention one of my favorite authors.

The reason people hate twilight is not for the sparkly vampires, its because the girls flock to them like they're fucking chocolate pudding ice cream!

almost everyone I know hates twilight because the vampires are sparkly.
What means sparkly?

I hate Twilight chiefly because of my perception that it promotes violence towards women. Oh, and because I'm not twelve.

though you can like whatever to wish to like, so can i, twilight in my opinion is an enormously over hyped, movie and book, blood sucking juggernaut. there is a better way to convey a narrative than make it match its target audience, and the author could have possibly expanded her fan base by adding more mature language and dialogue to make the novel a little more serious to its readers. the movies just drove it off a cliff with the only remotely good acting done by Taylor Lautner, whose career is quite possibly ruined for being in such a tragedy, but when its all said and done, its not over all terrible its just, bad. That is my opinion.

*Sigh* It's poor writing, because Stephanie Myer dumbed down the writing of the original vampire just to get a target audience. That is not okay. She attempted to kill proper literature. She accomplished all of this by making it mainstream. Peeps wasn't mainstream. Mercedes Thompson wasn't mainstream. Alpha wasn't mainstream. I feel like Stephanie Myers whored out the idea just to make a buck.

EDIT: Read Let the Right One In for an idea of how to do a more personal, emotional vampire story properly. Twilight is just god awful in every way.
I'll admit I haven't read twilight, but I agree with the suggestion that all readers of vampire books should acquire Let the Right One In and read it at some point.

I really need to get round to watching the DVD at some point...

I hate Twilight. I hate the reimagining of long established themes, I hate the bastardization of age old names, I hate the terribly shallow plot, and I hate the franchise it has established for itself.

And I am thankful that it brought people back to reading.

The thing about Twilight is, once you accept how eye-stabbingly awful the whole enterprise is, it can almost become enjoyable. Try this little game:

Go to your local bookstore (or just grab it if you own a copy) and open any of the books in the series.
Flip the book open to a random page.
Read aloud a random passage on that random page.

I GUARANTEE YOU: it will be the most ridiculous thing you will have ever said out loud in your entire life.

I'll tell you why I didn't like the Twilight series, you even said it in the original post. Its target is for female teenagers. Both of which I am neither

To be clear I only watched the first movie, I have not read the books.

My theory is that all of this hate is not just for twilight, it just was the lucky one that made it big and thus became the target. The fantasy fans have been through a lot, (I get the best looks for reading fantasy/sci fi books)however the biggest thing we seem to hate is losing our territory. We have lost vampires and the like to romance novels as well as to cheap/bad yet popular movies. So when a core part of the fiction setting is changed so much that it is no longer the original product but it keeps the name we become defensive.

With one line of text much hate could have been avoided, "We are vampires who have evolved due to the ____ in our blood it makes us sparkle in the sun rather than die". Add a new shiny name and bam vampire fan boys have less to hate.

I personally see twilight as well as all fantasy romance books as a sort of fantasy light all the words 1/2 the core fantasy.

Come meal mate Gehenna is coming, as the elders awaken we must fear Caine?s wrath. As a Malkavian I see many things; if you play Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines you might gain understanding into some of the vampire cult.

I saw New Moon. It was surprisingly not the worst movie I have ever seen. That title belongs to Paranormal Activity. Though I did see both with Riftrax.

The film is really, really good. It cuts out a lot of the more 'horror' aspects of the novel though, and focuses more on the relationship between Eli and Oskar. Apart from that, it stays pretty close to the book.
Awesome - I picked it up when I saw it for about £3, because I'd enjoyed the book; I just haven't had time to watch it yet.

I'm glad you've found a book series you enjoy, and I hope you continue to embrace literature, branching out and trying new authors, genres, and styles in addition to what you already know you like.

That said, I personally loathe the Twilight series with the burning intensity of a billion suns. But I'm me, and you're you. If you like it, more power to you. :)

I'm glad somebody respectable enjoyed the book, it doesn't suit my tastes as far as vampires go.

(Cirque du Freak on the other hand? Fuck yeah.)

I have nothing against the book, but I hate the girls who want Edward to be real.
