Just because lawyers are ass**** doesn't mean we should make the game developers suffer.
It went under Bethesda's name. If Bethesda truly objected then they could have told the lawyers to knock it off and drop the case.
I strongly doubt the developers and people who actually slaved away at the game even had a say in it. It'll be all the bosses sitting in their cushty offices who have no actual clue what goes in the development room.

I'm torn here 'cause I like Bethesda AND Mojang, but this won't stop me buying Skyrim. I'm dying for that game.

I want to start out by saying i am a huge huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and a huge huge fan of Bethesda in general.

Between Fallout 3, Morrowind and Oblivion, I have lost somewhere in the vicinity of 400+ hours of my life.

I am fan. I am huge fan.

And I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

I want to make it clear, I have been lusting for Skyrim since it was announced. All press I have seen looks magnificent. Everything I have heard sounds incredible. It looks like another brilliant Bethesda game that I will subsequently lose a massive portion of my life and time to.

And I will not be purchasing it.

Because of this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.315129-Mojang-and-Bethesda-Are-Going-to-Court

I will not support a company that attempts to use lawsuits as a means of flagrant bullying and outright douchbaggery in order to crush perceived competition.

If Bethesda goes through with this utter horseshit of a frivolous lawsuit, I will no longer support Bethesda.

Even though this means I will never play Skyrim, I will no longer support Bethesda in any way.

I will not purchase their products. I will not play products of theirs that I already own.

I have already sacrificed 400+ hours of work on Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, deleting the games from my hard drive and removing all saves.

Bethesda will make a hundred bajillion dollars off of Skyrim.

Not a single penny of it will be from me.

Team Mojang.

Those who punish themselves over a companies misdoings are pretentious and stupid. Im sure Bethesda will be heart broken that you have deprived yourself of fun whilst bathing in their money bath.

You want people to argue...with lawyers? good luck!
Yes. If their employer tells a lawyer to knock it off, they'll back off.
Well the developers are not the employers nor are the animators or artists or guys who do sound(whatever there called)The people who are really making the game are not in charge. these people are:
Vlatko Andonov, President
Todd Vaughn, VP Development
Pete Hines, VP PR & Marketing
Ron Seger, VP Sales
Todd Howard, Executive Producer and Game Director
Ashley Cheng, Production Director

This attitude of it wont make a difference anyway is exactly why companies can do exactly what they like. Why not stick it to EA by not buying their crap til they do away with online passes, why not stick it to a company who's practices you don't like? Because if everyone stood together and did so those companies would know about it and it would make a difference. Everything is not futile, as much as you've convinced yourself the reason you're idle is because it wont matter.

Good for you. Go start a protest. One single persona lone not buying the game is a fly attempting to tell off the moon lots of people subscribing to the same motives and actions are a force to be reckoned with. Now go and start a movement!

This has probably already been said a million times, but I'll just post it again to try and hammer home how ridiculous this statement is.

The Bethesda developers have no say in the legal department - not every Bethesda employee is Hitler. Those people who've spent the last five years developing the game you've been 'lusting over' are one hundred percent innocent in this lawsuit; you've been following them, not some corporate douchebags in suits. By that logic your reasons for boycotting the game are completely irrational.

But anyway this doesn't really seem like a debate thread. It's got no discussion value since you've already made up your mind and won't be swayed either way, so I guess there's no point in even arguing - I feel stupid for writing this out already xD

I'll 'rent' it via the pirating method; if I don't like it (And I won't, it sounds stupid that they removed most of the creation) then I'll delete it.

As for that lawsuit; it's just silly. It's like the EA, Activision, Capcom strategy now.
Sorry, what creation?
Character creation, primarily. If they're sticking to the 'lore' I keep hearing about and dreading, then all of the races from Oblivion will be cast aside so that you can be some random Dragonborn which is just a human with a spiffy name apparently.

EDIT: Waitwot? There was someone above me mentioning it, I just went with the flow. Apologies on my hand then.

I did it for New Vegas but ended up buying it anyways.
Lol, what? You can choose from the same 10 playable races there were in Morrowind and Oblivion. I'm extremely confused about where you got the impression that you couldn't. Just like the Nerevarine, the Dovahkiin can be any race.

In fact, the character creation in Skyrim looks much better than Oblivion. There's a slider to choose how buff your characters' body is, and you can choose scars, face paint, beards... everything looks great.

I wasn't going to make any noise about it, but...

I'm very interested in Skyrim. I am, however, not at all interested in Scrolls (which, regardless of Bethesda's claims, is not an adventure game).

If this lawsuit goes Bethesda's way, I am going to disregard buying Skyrim and instead purchase Mojang's game... whatever its name will be post-lawsuit. An industry giant going after a rising indie developer on completely bogus grounds does not sit well with me, and I know where my money will be most needed.

Ha! Yeah right. If you're that big a fan, there's no way you won't get Skyrim.

I do think the lawsuit is frivolous, and I do like Mojang better in some respects, but Bethesda is a big company. The lawyers are the ones suing, NOT the developers.

Very commendable and all, but if you're going to boycott companies with nasty practices be prepared to lose a whole lot more than a couple of Bethesda games.
When EA decided that the best way to compete against the NFL 2kX series - which was beating the shit out of now-with-updated-roster-Madden by being both cheaper and better - was by buying an exclusive contract with the NFL, in essence forcing their competition into a grave, I stopped purchasing EA games as well.

(Which has been pretty rough, those fuckers put out everything.)
You could do what I do and only buy EA games second hand. I also do this for Activision. Once in a while I accidentally buy a new game, but only because sometimes they hardly advertise themselves on the box.

Bethesda has a decent reason to want Mojang to change the game's name, and it wouldn't be that hard for Mojang to change it. You know how many people would buy Scrolls thinking that it's an Elder Scrolls game? Mojang probably knew ahead of time that some people would do just that, and they probably did it on purpose. So go ahead, don't buy Skyrim. Delete all your save games. Throw your little hissy fit. I don't care.
Yeah because all Indie developers want to do is screw over big name companies instead of making games, that sounds SO legit. Seriously though it was probably just a coincidence, and Bethesda's panties tangled themselves into a knot and now they want to bully compensation and a name change out of a small developer. Who's the one over-reacting here? Not only that, but at least the name of Mojang's game actually revolves around a major game mechanic: "magic scrolls", the same reason why "Dwarfs!?" is adequately named.

Bethesda development team =/= Bethesda legal team.

You're just being close-minded.
People say this sort of thing all the time when someone chooses to not support a product based on the business decisions of higher ups in the company releasing it, but I'm calling bullshit. If he doesn't agree with their business decisions to the point that he doesn't want to support the company making them, then that's his choice, and a perfectly valid one. Even if it means not supporting talented developers who may deserve to have their work appreciated. You can't support one without supporting the other when you make a purchase.

He's made a decision to vote with his wallet and not support companies who do things he doesn't agree with. I couldn't support a person more in such an endeavour. Good on you for sticking to your principles OP.

not your personal blog, and don't really care. I play games despite the company or politics behind it, however this is not going to be an easy court case.

The thing is that EA and Activision have done a hell of a lot more to piss me off than Bethesda ever did, and if any other game company felt like they had similar ground for a lawsuit I guarantee they would have done it. Also its not like Todd Howard came to his legal offices demanding Notch's head on a platter, just saying.
