Quiet Stranger said:Exactly, I don't think you can get cancer from plain old weed (unless its laced with something)Julianking93 said:Pros? What pros?
The only thing you get from smoking cigarettes is a nice case of cancer.
Can you get addicted to weed? (if you smoke it moderately, like once a month)
Well, unfortunately the posters in the nurses office dont lie, it has been proven time and time again that ciggarettes give you cancer. And if you think someone looks like an idiot, you have every right to say he is an idiot.kesslerparadox52 said:Ugh, I'm willing to bet you've never smoked a cigarette in your life, and you're damn proud of it. When did it become acceptable to pass judgment on an activity without having any prerequisite experience?Julianking93 said:Pros? What pros?

I, personally, don't smoke. But I have the right to make that judgment because I've tried it. I have smoked twice, and I formed my own opinion from the experience. I chose to do this, rather then borrowing my opinion from the posters in the nurses office.
Funnily enough, this may be why most of us here hate it. Because it is such a stupid unhealthy thing, that unfortunately really does make you look cool.Caligulove said:Of Cigarettes?
Pros: You do look pretty damn cool... .
If your employer knew, you would probably be fired, even if it has no impact on your ability to function.tonie said:isnt this because marijuana costs money?? they can afford it in the first place compared to others who need to spend on other stuff.. and i guess if i want to be a nitpick, quote where this study comes from.
That's taking it a bit hard as school performance for users and non-users is the same. After all, its effect of short term memory is pretty limited, learning, and new information recall is only diminished by some, but long term memory, and other cognitive function are not impacted. Also, this small diminished state only lasts for the duration of the intoxication, meaning a couple of hours, if not a little more. The marijuana may be detectable in your body for days, or even weeks, but doesn't effect short term memory at all.uh interesting, the 2 posts i wanted to quote were from the same person. ive also learned that marijuana is not addictive and has no evidence of brain damage... YET, is what i believe. i honestly dont believe anything that alters your state of mind is safe. alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, heroine, the list goes on and on.. it may not be physically addictive, but like someone said earlier some people cannot resist the reward, feeling high.
and the impact on memory is not just during intoxication, since its lipophilic it will stay in the bloodstream for a very long time after the high is over. meaning you wont learn anything for a long time after a joint even if youre not high. a normal joint or so may give you some minutes of high, but up to 72 hours or more of hindered memory function. and if you get a joint regularly, well.. sure, it might not be a big deal in the meantime, but short term memory ties into long term memory. they are not separate machines, they work together.
summing up, i believe weed makes you dumb. also, the above claim about productivity may be because they already had the skills learned before they smoked, so basically it could be done on autopilot. but they sure as hell wont be improving. also, i just thought of this, what kind of professions were they performing? desk work, manual labor? any doctors or lawyers in there?
and i hate the stink. i can smell weed from a long distance away. ive gotten used to cig smoke but i still hate it too, especially since both my parents smoke and my clothes start to stink when i go home.
Has anyone else noticed alcohol is both more addictive AND physically harmfull than canabis, yet it is legal, whereas cannabis is not?SwimmingRock said:Don't know if this is helpful, since you stated you don't know much about harmfulness and addiction, but here's the results from the people who test this stuff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rational_scale_to_assess_the_harm_of_drugs_%28mean_physical_harm_and_mean_dependence%29.svg

I notice a lot of your pros are just, it could be worse kinda scenarios.Davrel said:Pros? Transient, passing high.

Hokay.Quiet Stranger said:I kind of meant make a list of both, like Ciggys....Davrel said:Pros? Transient, passing high.

then Weed....
Like that
Cigs:
Pros - Slightly increased heart-rate / may make you feel cool / once addicted, fulfilling the addiction is reward in itself.
Cons - Price / Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known / Cancer / Causes you to smell like cigarettes / Gradually becoming unacceptable in society.
Weed:
Pros - Can get you high / Not quite as bad for you as other drugs / Jail sentences for marijuana related crimes are often lower than those associated with other drugs.
Cons - Greater risk of cancer (per usage) due to lack of filters / Paranoia / Other mental diseases / smells strongly / Good luck getting through an airport if you've even been near any in the last month or so / Suspicion of possession may lead you to get the fingers of law enforcement officials inserted into your anus.
In short - Just get drunk like everyone else.
Yes, people have known this for many years. In fact, Bill Hicks had a bit about it. I'm assuming from your post that you've never heard of the late genius and suggest you do something about that. The man was not only hilarious, but made some damn fine points.Floppertje said:Has anyone else noticed alcohol is both more addictive AND physically harmfull than canabis, yet it is legal, whereas cannabis is not?SwimmingRock said:Don't know if this is helpful, since you stated you don't know much about harmfulness and addiction, but here's the results from the people who test this stuff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rational_scale_to_assess_the_harm_of_drugs_%28mean_physical_harm_and_mean_dependence%29.svg
