I bought it on Release day. I played the hell out of it for about 2 weeks and that was it. I did everything you can do. I am a huge Metroid fan Super Metroid is the best still. And the 2D platform Metroid gameplay is superior to 3D platforming in first person. Only thing I would change about Other M is get rid of the first person missile shooting. Yea I've mastered it and I can flip the remote and hit something on bulleye with a pre-charged super missile. I still don't think that mechanic fits.

The linearity is more like Fusion than Metroid's 1, 2 or 3. Just like Fusion, the map only opens up after you have finished almost everything. This was done to serve the plot. Speaking of which. When I was at that hot lava area without the Varia suit, I didn't even remember that Samus still had the Varia suit until Adam told Samus to activate it, so I can understand why Samus may have not either. Its not like the heat was a major issue until that lava boss showed up. If you want to pretend Samus is a badass, she made it anyway. There you go. Don't even need a stinking Varia suit.
I remember when I bought Super Metroid when it first came out. For some reason I have two copies. I never beat it, and only found out about 10 years later that Samus was a woman.

I do agree with you on the linearity comparisons with Fusion...

People keep bringing up how the third to first person missile thing was terrible or distracting or in the way. I never had a problem with it. In fact, that sort of thing was absolutely seamless in Metroid Prime 3 - which I enjoyed immensely. My only problem with the view changing in Other M is the 'behind the shoulder' view. It kinda fit in the beginning, but all it does it make me very dizzy further in. Specially that part where the team splits up (before you go into the different sectors) and you're forced to trudge around in that view. I don't get why you can't run... It took forever to get into areas. And no monsters attack in that view. I believe the only reason for it is to build suspense.

Edit - to fix some terrible half-awake grammatical issues.

Actually, at no point did I actually say I enjoyed this game.

Nor did I ever call him a troll. I just said that he's mentally incapable. Oh, and a complete failure at his job.

I love how you've been weaseling out of fights or weird arguments directed at you in this thread with polite correctness and pointed misunderstandings. Keep it up. =D

I don't have a Wii, so I was pre-disapointed in that I knew I'd never get to play Other M. I still have only played (in terms of "recent metroids) Metroid Fusion on the cube. So I figured the trend would stick. My solution was you watch a lets-play-100%-items. No voice intrussion from the player, so I was able to enjoy with no external interruption.

With a game hailed as the sequel to my favorite metroid of all time, Super Metroid, I was excited. Samus with a voice and a narative through the whole game? I was more then excited, I was trying to figure out how I could dig up money for a Wii and a game. But then, I started to see how Samus handled herself in the new narrative. I found it to be very submissive to a stark male authorative presence.

As a girl gamer, there are few girls in gaming that I feel women can look up to. Samus was one in the past, as a strong sexy and capable protagonist, even if she was a mute. In Other M, there was visual, narrative choices, and word choices that constantly placed Samus under the authorative heel of the Captain guy.

So right out of the box, Other M killed an icons ability to be an empowering woman. Then the story got underway.

Ignoring the lame plot device of Samus "activating" parts of her suits functions, the story weaved around from interesting to brow cockingly full of holes. This part involves spoilers, so if you're not familiar with how the plot plunges into the void, don't click below. If you don't care, as it sounds like you don't, read on.

Samus nicknames a mysterious assassin "The Deleter" pretty early on, and you even do battle with him in the ice area as he drives a monster industrial vehicle. I liked this angle, and it was exciting! Just before Samus could get a look at the Deleter, he got away. Damn! But later, we discover that the woman Samus was rescuing in that scene was a brain dump for Mother Brain, so the Federation could use her to control metroids. That in itself, kinda cool. But these two plots were thrown together, like two people were writing two scripts and needed to mix it together in the middle.

In the end, The Deleter doesn't exist. You fought with him, yes, but who that was never gets hammered out. The woman is Mother Brain, and any of her minions were very much not trooper-shaped. Everyone is accounted for, and they're all good people.

Samus has another encounter with, yup, you guessed it, Ridley. Personally, I'm happy for Ridley being back in classic form. Samus and Ridley are classic opposing forces in the series. It's expected, and it's typically awesome. Except for here in Other M. Whereas Samus has gone through countless fights with different Ridleys, and Other M is the 2nd to top game in the Metroid time line (Fusion being the top of the time line), Samus has a mental breakdown when she sees Ridley pop up. So much so that she needs a a bid strong man to come rescue her so she gets her act together long enough to put up a wimpy fight.

I forget when and where, but it was esstablished in a previous game that Ridley was responsible for killing samus' parents, an destroying her childhood. Team Ninja had that built into the story, but missed an opportunity to build on Samus' experiences fighting Ridley to instead make her throw a fit.

In the end, I liked what the game play looked like. It looked smooth, fun, and fast paced. But the cavernous story plot holes, and submissive role that Samus took caused me to shake my head. Other M rests at the bottom of my prefered Metroids, just above the NES version for gameplay value.

What's with the sudden influx of posts like this?

Nearly everyone knows ZP videos are just entertainment, I don't think anybody really takes the reviews seriously.
Because "just entertainment" or not he still pretends to be a reviewer. As long as he pretends to be a reviewer I'll judge him based on his merits as one. In other words, his lack of merit as a reviewer.

I'm sorry to tell you that he's probably more of a actual reviewer that you give him credit for. He talks about actual problems the games in his reviews have and he even talks about the good (sometimes) and isnt that what i reviewer does? Well besides the "sometimes mentions good" part. The reason his reviews are "just entertainment" is because he takes the bad and blows it ridiculously outta proportion if it wasn't for that I don't think you would be able to say he's not a actual reviewer.

OT: MoMs story and all that other jazz are complete shit but I beat it because I rather enjoyed the game play myself (I even got use to the controls so by the end switching to missile mode wasn't awkward any more)

Really the only thing anyone really hates about the game is the story/cutscenes/voiceacting/characterrization, the gameplay is alright. The characterization of Samus is what really fucking pissed people off. She was pretty much screwed from the start when Team Ninja, the assholes who see women as slabs of meat to stick your meat into, were allowed to produce the game. I mean really? What shithead thought that was a good idea? ao the protagonists personality suffered from this faulty fucking judgement. But they didn't stick her in a bikini and make her play vollyball for the majority of the game, so it could have been worse.

I've been playing it recently too. I'm not as far as you OP, but I'm enjoying it. I am sort of seeing it as a metroid spin-off game, and can't really see it as part of the series though (even if its supposed to be). I like the fast pace and most of the gameplay, but I miss the heavy exploration element, the moody atmosphere and the solitude of the earlier games. Also, all I can hear coming out of Samus' mouth is "blah-blah blah-blah-blah, blabitty-blab blah pfftttthhhhh..."
It's good, but certainly not as good as any other metroid game in my opinion. That doesn't make it bad though. It just makes it a brand new shiny quarter compared to a brick of gold.

He barely plays the games he *Cough* "Reviews". Then again there's only two reviewers I listen to. Ultimately he's a child who knows little about the medium, and is incredibly instant gratification oriented. And not to mention incredibly inconsistant with himself. He barely mentions the positive attributes of a game (If he even deigns to). What a stupid sod.

To be fair, I haven't actually played the game. I was sitting & watching someone else play it. And have no basis for a personal opinion.

[snip!]
You should try out the Prime series if you haven't, especially 3. Man did I love those games.

Also don't know how you're surprised about how Samus was portrayed when Team Ninja did the game. Everyone, and I mean Everyone who saw the first previews and learned that TN was making it thought of 'jiggle physics' and 'shy, dominateable' women. Even if the guy who wrote the plot was someone who originally made the other Metroid games, Team Ninja being anywhere involved with the title made the presentation of the plot and Samus's character least surprising.

If you're shocked by Samus anyway, then treat the game's plot as you would... oh... Zelda CDI, where Link was first given a voice. Mind you, it's nowhere near as terrible, but it's one reason why I'm not too phased by games like Other M.

On the by, you should get a Nintendo Wii. It has backwards compatability with the GC, you can dl old games off of it, and there are tons of good games on it. I recommend the Metroid Prime series, Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, and Monster Hunter 3 as your first titles, then work from there. The notion that the Wii is a gimmicky waste of time with only spam games is over-hyped. There are plenty of fun games both old and new if you're smart enough to look for them. (I badly want to see how 'hardcore' people quote this and reply.)

You are not wrong at all. As someone said earlier, personal experience is subjective. Regardless, I thought the gameplay was mostly good. I just could not stand the story. I am a Metroid fan, and maybe because the rest of the games Samus spends most of, if not, all of the games doing basically whatever she wants, to see her restricted of her abilities not because she lost them to electrical stuff in an elevator or the X-parasites, but because Adam told her not to, made me very annoyed. Im glad I played it, and i just hope Retro did well with the donkey kong game, that way they wont regret droping Metroid.

Fair enough I said what I wanted to say "to each his own" I suppose. And if you ever do decide to play MoM I HIGHLY suggest you rent it its not bad but it damn sure isn't worth buying

If you're enjoying it for the gameplay, then good. Its an interesting take on the standard Metroid formula.

If you're enjoying for the total wuss-i-fication of one of gaming's greatest female heroes, then yes, you are wrong.

If anyone rags on you because you like a game, ignore them. Those are the type of people who have a hard time liking anything and hates to see other people enjoy themselves. They are irrelevant.

Of course not, that's your opinion after all. You can like whatever, so long as you don't shove it in my face.

I personally think Metroid: Other M is one of the worst games I've ever played.
