Is the modeling industry representative of what men actually find attractive?

What the industry calls "Plus Sized", for me at least, yes. The term is entirely wrong though. My last ex was size 22. That's "plus". Size 10 - 14 (Australian) = sexy as hell. Women with curves are faaaaaaaaaaaar more attractive than science-room skeletons with wigs and bad breath.

Yeah men don't give a fuck as long as your not ugly (unless you're into that)
We'd rather have you not have any clothes at all, and we don't usually mind unless you're obese (unless you're into that)

Is it supposed to be? I was unaware skeletons wearing outrageous costumes were attractive. Hmm.

Cleverlymadeup, one more thing...

what's the obsession with procreation? You do know men look for more than just mating quality in women, right? How about love, sex, companionship, and empathy? How about finding someone who really knows how to make you feel like a man?
actually it's EVERYONE's obsession.

sex - part of procreation
love - part of procreation
companionship - part of procreation
empathy - yup you guessed it part of procreation

oh and making you feel like a man is also about procreation, the more manly you are the more aggressive sperm you produce which makes your chances of conceiving better

every time you look at a woman, even if you don't outright think it, you are saying to yourself "wow i would like to have a kid with her"

i've just happened to watch a bunch of shows on human sexuality and our mating behaviors, it's rather interesting to see how animal like we really are

By the way, the first pic was of Stephanie Seymour from back when Victoria Secret and Sports Illustrated were still fans of curves, the second was the adorable indie darling Thora Birch from American Beauty and Ghost World, and the last three were all porn stars.
i knew who they all were, having the name in the link was a dead give away

I won't quote your earlier comments which were very patronizing because that's nitpicking to the point of being insulting. My point, again, is that you are not right because you say you are. Again, your idea that the waist to hip ratio as a factor in attraction has validity - but there is no precise ratio. You don't have to define ratio vs. measurement to me, either. All men are different, and everyone is not exactly like you.
i'm not being patronizing, if i was you'd know it. the fact that i'm claiming all this is because there's a TON of science behind what i'm saying. there's been study time and time again that proves guys look for certain things in women. when the "standard of beauty" is set, there's a very good reason for that and frankly there's also a ton of science behind it as well.

if you don't want to mention about ratio vs measurements then you should actually read and comprehend what i'm writing instead of just taking a number i was using as an example.

Models are far too thin. They need a good plate of bacon!
Those near-anorexic ones freak me out...

On the subject the exact same thing could be said about male modeling driving young men to look and act like effeminate douchebags... I blame women, it's all there fault!!!
Jark,

I just masturbated, and now God's going to kill your avatar.

Sorry.
How could you do that to a newly outfitted motivational avatar???

You monster!!!!!

Hell no. Models tend to be flat chested and skinny to the point where you can see their ribcage. Plus, this is judging off of the probably collective 5 minutes I've seen of "America's Next Top model" while flipping channels, but they make them wear a lot of shit that's just like "WTF that's not attractive at all"

But yeah, as you said, the porn industry has it pretty much down to a science.

I would say they are a representation of whatever the designer thinks they'll look best in. And is trying to convince you that it's the best for you or your partner, or kid, or dog or whatever. That's the point of a model... To advertise.

But I'd knock the granny out of Heidi Klum

To me it's all just too airbrushed and otherwordly, and leaves me with the sense that

A-There's not a woman on the planet that looks like that

and

B-Even if there was, She probably wouldn't spend much time hanging among us ordinary men.
..and they would probably have a personality as shallow as a teaspoon

To me, I think women who are good-looking but not perfect are more beautiful than any woman in a magazine or a film, because normally they're the kind of people you could actually be able to sit down and have intelligent conversation with. But on top of that I think we should be glorifying personality and intelligence rather than vanity.

All men are different for one.

Two, men don't care. Ralph Lauren and Movies like to pretend they know who we like because they parade a certain type out and we all go "She's hot!" But seriously, as long as she's not super repulsive, there is bound to be guys who like anyone they put in magazines and movies.
Is that why so many guys lose their shit over Jennifer Garner and Megan Fox?
Yeah, pretty much. I'm not one of these guys mind you. I just know how they are.

"Dude, have you seen Rise of the Silver Surfer?"

"The first one sucked, why would I watch the second one?"

"Jessica Alba is in it!"

Idiots.

Sadly, I think that porn better represents our taste in women than high fashion or Hollywood - yet women and young girls alike model themselves on Ralph Lauren and cinema.
If any woman models themselves on what they think Men (as some sort of collective consciousnes) want then they're doing it wrong.
If you actually think about it, they probably are - just look at the womens' Hallowe'en costumes.

They mostly look hellishly slutty, and really, it is completely their fault - I don't remember asking any woman to dress like they do on, for example, Hallowe'en.
If you want to have a costume that will attract attention and still not have to put too much effort into it then going with whats provided is easiest. On one hand many women do put much much effort into their appearance, on the other hand the industry EXPECTS this of a woman.

As a photoshop artist myself I've got to say that while it may not come down to what 'men' find attractive, but what overall is attractive.
The level of nitpicking demanded is astounding. They are trying to create something that people can be impressed by, aspire to have and overall find little issue with (if the reader is brainwashed enough). But the 'attractiveness' they are trying to create doesn't really have a target audience more specific than the entire human race, if you want to specify it the best you can do is what they're advertising and what medium they're using to do it.
Unfortunately very few women (in comparison to how many are brainwashed by these images) actually know they have been photoshopped...
But on a side note how many sales do you think these people would get if they started trying to sell 'normal' sized clothes again?! It would be astounding.
And sorry for double post. :D

A friend once told me that the reason the fasion industry uses such scrawny women as models is because it's a lot easier to make clothing for skinny people and then scale it up to fit larger people afterwards than to start big and scale down. Because of this, they want women who are the minimum size that they plan to make the item of clothing for.

Personally, feel the healthy and natural are the bare minimum required to be worth looking at, and ideally I go for a more amazonian woman.
Does that mean you like your women to cut off one of their breasts so they'll be better archers?
:)
Not bothered either way
There are straps to help them out the way during archery nowerdays (watch olympic archery if you need proof :) )

CleverlyPedantic,

I think it's time to stop the flame war. It's just not working out. It's not you, really, it's me. You'll find someone. Don't worry.

Most women I find attractive, most guys would call "fat" because they're big-breasted, bubble-butt, a little padding from their love of their own great cooking. Y'know, real women. If they're shorter than 5'4 and cute-faced, so much the better.
Define "big breasted", but other than that, I think you're so close to what I like, it's almost creepy.
I think we might be long lost triplets.

you're the one flaming me, i'm just pointing out facts that have been backed up by TONS of research, i mean it's not as if you didn't try and troll me in another thread ... oh wait you did

i'm guessing you still haven't learned when trying to insult someone, you shouldn't actually be doing the same or worse type of behavior. if you don't follow that it just makes you look even worse.

You're just upset because I, being more manly than you, have more aggressive sperm as a result. And therefore, my soldiers are likely to be better swimmers than yours. Which means, if you and I ever appear in one of those really weird pornos wherein the nice young woman wishes to have two gentlemen dilate her cervix simultaneously, my marines will outmaneuver yours to the egg and have time left over to draw straws.

Seriously though, how do you scientifically gauge "manliness" and how does this impact sperm boot-camp?
