Is There Such Thing as Bad Music...

Many a time music is held up as awesome or pure crap based solely on the listening preferences of the folks making those judgments, but for the most part even things we hate aren't bad music. I don't particularly like insipid and repetitive pop for example, but I can at least recognize it as competently executed music I really really hate.

Bad music on the other hand is music that fails at being music. If you like bands that do nothing but scream over top a thrashing wall of noise that sounds indistinguishable from a series of explosions, then you're pretty much musically retarded and you have my pity. Other notable examples - bands where the lead singer is either incredibly tone-deaf or just pure malevolent evil incarnate for singing like somebody who is tone-deaf intentionally, music where two distinct and non-complimentary tunes are played at the same bloody time (modern 'classical' music loves doing that), music that has no tune at all, a horrific combination of everything I just mentioned, etc. Bad music isn't just music you don't like, it's music that actively punishes you for ever having the audacity to listen to it.

Thankfully most music you run into that you despise will just be annoying or stupid rather than unholy perversions of the medium of sound.

scribbling in the mario paint mosic maker would often make horrible "songs"
Oh yes. Mario Paint music. Eww.

But then again, that's not really music, more a loud dischord more than anything.

The beautiful thing about music, is that no one is right or wrong. What sounds awesome to one person could be an assault to the ears of another. Yes there are bad examples of songs in every genre. You can't really say it's bad just because you don't like it though.

Technically, what is "bad" is entirely subjective, so in one sense there are no "bad" songs or bands, no matter how repetitive or simplistic their song structures are.

HOWEVER, one could argue that the people who like certain types of music have not explored the world of music very much, and so like what is easy to find rather than obscure stuff that is better. To use the much-maligned song Freaxxx by BrokeNCYDE, I found the simplistic techno harmony and the weak attempt at "screaming" utterly pathetic compared to the industrial metal I prefer to listen to. But someone who hasn't discovered metal may find the juxtaposition of metal and techno to be fresh and catchy.

Bad music does exist.
That's nice, but reasons and links?
One song which proves bad songs (in this case terrible songs) exist:

Worst. Song. Ever....Of all time.
Actually, you're entirely correct - I can't think of a single person who would ever say that this is "good" music.

I just found the worst thing ever as far as 'is there bad music' today.

Solja boy rapping about his anime collection. All he talks about is Pokemon and Inuyasha. And he sits there and says anime forever. If that doesn't prove there can be bad music, you are just a liar.
