... or is it just music that you don't like?

It was something that I was thinking about today. In one of the rooms at school that I was in during break, someone was playing the song 'Sexy *****' by... someone. Akon, I think. Anyway, the lyrics include such gems as 'I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful!'. He then goes on to tediously repeat the words 'Sexy *****. Sexy *****.' Over and over again. Just after telling her that he wouldn't be disrespectful. Yeah. I realise that this could be a painful attempt at irony, but I realised that I couldn't listen to this crap for ages.

The thing that got me, though, was that people in the same room appeared to enjoying it. Actually enjoying this turd.mp3! 'Why can't they just listen to my music?', I thought? Then that led me thinking... if I put on an iPod with Modest Mouse or They Might be Giants playing would the people who enjoyed 'Sexy *****' think the same thing? 'God, this music is awful!'.

So, that leads me to my question: can any music be considered bad, or is it just not for you?

To a certain extent I agree, but then there is that certain kind of pop-rap/techno music that I absolutely loath. But, I've said a lot in my post, so, your go?
Yes, there is such a thing as bad music. The music you discribe: crap rap and techno (although, some electronic music is really good, the shit they play on the radio/Ministry of Sound really put a bad name to it) is shit. No doubt about it. People only listen to it cause its the only thing they know: they only eat what they're given, they don't seek out different better music.

There is such thing as personal preference, but really, most pop is shite.

I do like your taste in music too! Modest Mouse = oneofthemostawesomebandsever!~

No, music is subjective. There's no true scale on which we can rate its quality.

Music is technically defined as something that is pleasing to the ears, so there is no such thing as bad music.

Since "bad" is opinion based, "Poorly executed", amateur", and "unoriginal" are the terms that I like to use.

And yes, there is poorly executed, amateur, and unoriginal music in this world.

Bad music does exist.
That's nice, but reasons and links?
One song which proves bad songs (in this case terrible songs) exist:

Worst. Song. Ever....Of all time.
Actually, you're entirely correct - I can't think of a single person who would ever say that this is "good" music.
How can you say that? That man is a musical genius!

OT: In my own humble opinion, since the soundtrack to Call of Duty: World at War were ever crafted and Bieber were spawned then I'll have to admit that there is such a thing as bad music.

correct me if im wrong but, i´ve heard that hearing certain kind of music launches a reaction of somekind in your brain that gives you the "chills" everytime you hear a part of a song... now if there is a tune that doesen´t give anyone these "chills" can´t be good music yes? :)

because every song that gives me these chills are my favourite songs ^^

Yes, it's called rap, and people who enjoy it listen to it.
Fixed that for you.
Dude, I don't know who you are, and I certainly don't remember posting in this thread, but I know for a fact I didn't say that.

Don't re-wright my posts please.

I suppose that for nearly every piece of music, there has to be someone who likes it, even if it is just the performer, but badly performed music is extremely hard to enjoy, even for the performer.
For example, if someone is playing the violin, and they keep messing up, creating that horrible screechy noise, then most likely nobody will enjoy it.

So in short: Yes, there is bad music, the stuff that is badly performed.

Is there such a thing as Bad Games? Is there such a thing as Bad Movies? If the answer is yes to any of those questions, it is the same for music...

I guess there must be people that preffers "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing" over "Burnout Paradise" in the racing games genre... I guess.

If a game is glitchy, the controls are poor, and its barely playable its a bad game. If a movie is poorly directed with poor camera work and editing and the acting is terrible then its a bad movie. The same thing applies to music like if theres no melody or any of the things that make music objectively good then it is bad music.

If you can name one person who enjoys listening to serialism music, then i will cook and eat my shoes. It sounds like a small child pressing random notes on a piano/keyboard, however it is very strictly controlled by maths. It's the proof that skill in maths isn't all you need to be good at music.
I am sorry. I do enjoy Webern's Op. 5 (at least).

It would seem that this thread is an excercise in spoon feeding.

Good choice! Personal favorites of mine include works by Ruders (particularily Corpus Cum Figuris), Schoenberg, and Nono.

I actually really like some serialism. Berg absolutly rules and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHb_4zvIHw8 this absolute proof of this. Berg in general is my favorite composer of the 20th century. the type of music that you are thinking of is john cages theory of chance music. I even like a lot of 12 tone music and can point out a lot of good Schonberg.

In short there is a lot of good chromatic based music out there but 90% of it is shit like everything else.
