However I think women are partly to blame for this problem though - you just have to look to the huge number of 'bar-sexual' women and teenage girls who are straight, but willing to get drunk (or not) and make out with other women - mostly to make themselves appear sexy to men by fulfilling their fantasy - though no doubt they'd run a mile if a lesbien actually asked them out on a date. These women are damaging the credibility and the value of lesbien relationships by turning it into nothing but a pretty image for their lecherous male companions to store in their spank-banks.

I agree, heterosexual women shouldn't pretend to be homosexual or bisexual to attract men.

Ignorance is irritating to be sure. But what it all boils down to is: Our current society(I'm talking globally) isn't and probably never will be a generally accepting society. there will always be someone looking down on someone else for something and there will always be people backing them. ignorance will never fade into the background as unto silence as it should.

same reason I say as a warning "If you play with fire you may very well get burned" rather than "you will get burned" after all I'm a bit of a pyro and I've never once burned myself with an open flame :p. in other words, saying because someone doesn't say sure everyone is allowed to do anything they wanna do, is saying that they are not allowed to hold an opposing, or ill informed view, equally discriminatory?

way i see it people do what they do. sometimes it bites em back later other times it doesn't.

/end rant(ishness)

Similar things can be found in what I've seen of television. There are gay characters, but they're select stereotypes.
The entirety of media is stereotypes: all husbands are stupid, all wives are domineering, all girls love pink etc.
Look at the people though. Stephen Fry, Sir Ian McKellan, Neil Patrick Harris, Derek Jacobi, Noel Coward, RTD (spit), Elton John, Gordon Kaye, Matt Lucas, Dick Sargent, Valerie Singleton and that's just some of the ones that actually admit it.

If there was a Gay Mafia(!), they could take down the entire light entertainment industry in one foul swoop.

Well since I've got a gay cousin, I've felt more open about gay people and it doesn't really matter since if they love each other then so be it.
"It's not natural." Is my most hated quote about attitudes towards gay's, this was over a mobile phone while the guy was on a boat...he was talking about "unnatural" things talking to someone 500 miles away while floating on a giant bit of metal, love is natural, all of the things he owns and uses are unnatural so he disproves his point that "gayness" is unnatural.

I'd just like to see these people who support homosexuality do the same for religion.
And vice versa. Especially vice versa.

And then, for bonus points, say something nice about smokers.
LOL! That sums up an older friend of mine who recently passed away, he was gay, a strict baptist, and a smoker. It was a very good combination, his partner was the same way.

From a quantitative point of view, it is improved from hating it altogether if you class one bunch as acceptable.

Or would you punish a child for taking baby steps before breaking into a full sprint?

Actually, I'll avoid that post. It didn't make sense. I think it'd be better if people didn't see two guys in the street kissing, and started saying 'ew!' But then they turn around and see two girls, and straight away go. ''OH FUCK YES MORE'' (Excuse my french)

kinda works both ways

Most guys i know dont like two men going at it. While most women i know dont like two women going at it either.

Some guys find two girls together sexy and some girls find two guys together sexy.

ALSO- some guys prefer porn with no dudes in it because they don't like COCK, and two naked women is always good as 1) theyre naked
2) no cock
so they dont have to like the idea of lesbians, to like lesbian sex

OP - I think you'll find the hypocrisy here pretty much stems from people's own insecurities, more specifically the insecurities of young guys, I can tell you from being subjected to 6 years in a catholic all-boys high school that we all have that homophobic, misogynistic mind set. It's merely conditioning through peer-pressure, immaturity and quite frankly not worth getting frustrated over.

When these guys grow up, when they eventually come to and decide to be comfortable with their own sexuality, they'll take to an entirely different state of mind and realize just how petty and stupid this behavior was. Simply put it's a matter of growing up and unfortunately it takes some a much longer time than others.

EDIT - to answer your question whether it's justified or not, in my honest opinion no. Make no mistake I'm a straight guy and will admit that i get off on watching lesbians, in saying this i am put off by my own gender, so when i see two guys kissing on the street how do i deal with this? i divert my eyes, accept it as part of life and go about my day.

Now if I'm allowed the freedom to enjoy watching lesbians and not be ostracized for it, does that make me a bad person? I'd like to think no. So then why should gays and bi's not be allowed this freedom either? isn't it the same thing? I'm sorry but there is no justification for this at all.

Anti-homosexuality pisses me off. What's more annoying is the people who openly flame homosexual, or bisexuals, or males who decide to push their boundaries a little and then turn around to watch lesbians with a sick grin.

It's nothing short of sheer stupidity.

The unfortunate thing is that this attitude is not just prevalent in mainstream society against gays either. More than once I've seen gay-marriage stickers and the like saying "Support Gay Marriage if both chicks are hot." How does that, in any way shape or form, genuinely support the cause? Sure one can say "Oh, it's a joke." but I bet any number of people take that attitude very seriously. They will make cat-calls and watch two women like hawks. They will campaign for lesbians because they get entertainment out of the viewing. It's in no way improved from hating homosexuality all together if you're going to divide it up into "acceptable" and "fuckin' gross and you should be beaten up."

I've confronted a number of people about their behaviour along these lines and have been laughed at for proposing that they should extend their "Oh go ahead!" attitude to non-lesbians as well. As such, I ask you Escapist. Have you seen this behaviour? Is it justified, at all?

EDIT: This is not about gay marriage rights, we've had enough of those threads. It's about cultural attitudes to the people themselves. That sticker was just an example.
I don't get it... Wouldn't it be perfectly normal for a heterosexual guy to think that two men making out is gross but two women making out is hot?

Not that I think of them differently, since I believe that all people are bisexual.

Edit: Although, if all people are bisexual they wouldn't really think that it's gross.

To be honest, I kind of agree that this is no better than homophobia. Actually, its worse because it's discriminating between who you degrade by abuse or degrade by objectification. Discriminating against certain people because of things out of their control has never really bought any good in the past so I don't like it here either.

I've always found this passage stupidly ambiguous. You can lie with a woman in many ways. You can lie with a woman in the room next to your's, or in the same house as one, so does this mean that you can't live with your father/brother/roommate?

:p

Seriously this sort of thing annoys me too. I hate closet hypocrisy.

I honestly don't see a difference between a homosexual couple or a heterosexual couple. A devoted gay couple is as romantic as a devoted straight couple.

I don't really care. I like seeing lesbian pornography as much as the next guy, but I don't condemn male/male homosexuality at the same time. It just surprises me how many people on here say they actually get angered by this mentality. Just let it go. I really didn't want Obama to get into office, but it doesn't anger me or even mildly upset me to see people with "Obama '08" bumper stickers. I don't like Christianity either, but it doesn't bother me to see "Jesus loves me" stickers.

I am a heterosexual white male, the apparent evil of the world according to many people's views, but it doesn't bother me when comedians make fun of us or when politicians/lawyers condemn us. I think people just get too worked up over other people's opinions, and it is wholly unnecessary.

Because (straight) guys don't want to see 2 ugly chicks making out, or 2 guys for that matter.

I for one am tired of 2 things, gay bashing, and people complaining about gay rights. A union is just as good as a marriage. Why can't we just all get along and ignore other people's sexual preference?
A union is state-wide, marriage is country-wide. So, a gay couple is married, until they move to a state with no unions.

Also, I remember hearing about another difference but I forgot what it is.

I'll agree that you shouldn't hate PEOPLE until they hurt you or others, but I do have issue with one thing a couple of people have mentioned, and that is the notion that you can't say that you think homosexual activity is "gross" until you have logically analyzed it.

I think sour cream is gross. It's a knee-jerk, emotional reaction that I didn't arrive at through any kind of rational reflection or logical extrapolation from other facts or opinions. It's essentially an argument from repugnance. It's not a valid reason for me to want to blow up a sour cream factory, or to shoot you in the face because I see you eating it, but it's a perfectly valid reason for me to not eat sour cream.

If someone thinks homosexual activity is "gross" and doesn't want to explore that issue, why does he have to? If he's not hurting any gay people and he's not in a position to discriminate against them because of his feelings or pass those feelings on to others, why does the homophobe in question have to tell you WHY he thinks it's gross?

Also, for whoever the wannabe pedant who said "homophobia" means "fear of homosexuality," this one's for you: No it doesn't. "Phobos" in Greek is hate, not fear. Put down the Internet and read a book sometime.

Finally, someone else notices this!
I know plenty of men who mock gay men, but they have no problem watching lesbian porn.
Actually, I don't know a single man who doesn't like lesbian porn.
They're so hypocritical, they need a reality check. Half of those girls aren't even lesbians.
On a similar note, I know a lad who mocks every gay guy, calling him a 'batty boy' and taking the piss because 'he takes it up the arse' yet his girlfriend confided in me that he's been pestering her for anal sex.
/sigh.
I'm with you on this one, my dear.
