Elephants appear to be rather intelligent and impressive creatures. Since this ***** thought this was a cool kill, I'm going bow hunting myself. For people. Starting with this *****.

OH NO THE POOR ELEPHANT

Seriously, I'm sick of these stories. Why do people care about a fucking elephant more than their own species?

This is not news.
because there are 6 billion of our nasty asses and we tend to be overly willing to kill off everything else just to watch it die
You say that as if animals aren't supposed to kill each other.

Also these elephants are overpopulated, so her killing it helps the rest of the species. Plus they probably utilized the corpse of the beast after it had died.

So excuse me for not thinking this woman is a horrible entity of evil.
the only reason the elephants are over populated is because humans have vastly reduced the area they can roam, I tend the find the most amusing thing ever is when the hunter gets injured or killed by the species hes (or shes) trying to kill

Fuck that. That ***** should at least be charged with cruelty to animals if not killing a endangered species. Lock the ***** up. I hate sick cowards like that.
Would you care to elaborate on why she is such a coward?
She crept up and used a ranged weapon to take out a non predatory animal then snuck off and let the poor thing to suffer and die.
That is a coward. She did not get within fighting distance. She did not even finish it off. Also as I said she chose a non predatory animal, would she have the balls to do that to a lion or a bear? Fuck no as she knows it would fight back and kill her ass. So shes a coward and since she did that just for sport she deserves no better.
I honestly support the death penalty for scum like her.
She shot it from 12 yards away, with a bow and arrow. Thats fighting distance, especially for an elephant.

Elephants might not be preditory animals, but they are still extreamely dangerous, as they will still attak anything that gets too close to them. Up to 200 people are killed by elephants per year in India alone. Guides often carry AK-47s while bringing people to the area, just in case you'r shot doesn't take it down.

There's special hunting rifles designed solely to pierce elephant/rhino hide, because most can't do it. That should tell you something about this. Medieval battle armor (at most, ~1/4" of steel or iron plates) has absolutely nothing on elephant hide.
I'm aware that the elephant hide is much stronger than your standard suit of armor, but this is a weapon specifically designed to pierce. Not necessarily a suit of armor, but just in general. it was designed to hit something and keep going as far as possible.

we're talking about somebody shooting this [http://www.sphereheaven.com/images/Arrowhead.jpg] or maybe even these [http://bowsite.com/bowsite/features/practical_bowhunter/penetration/Penetration-broadheads.jpg] with something that probably looks like this [http://www.easterrossfieldarchers.org/images/Compound_Bow_full.jpg] (can't be sure, can't really tell from the pic in the source) at point blank. While I'm sure that medieval bows would probably have required this range, modern technology has improved the bow to the point where being that close is simply overkill.

Actually, I thought that you were generalizing, saying that you would choose any human being in the world over this elephant. And to prevent a possible arguement, I mean you would go through each person in the world, learn their life stories, and still choose everyone. So, every person who's been a dick to you, or anyone else who has done something that merits them a bad name.
I would choose the life of any human over an animal, even the fucktards that would beat me up regularly as a child. That's not to say I'd prefer both were alive, but the survival of my species > the survival of other species.

I still don't see what the big deal with her killing the elephant is though. It's one elephant out of however many thousands, and I'm 95% certain the corpse will be used in its entirety. Complaining about this is like complaining about someone killing the cow that made the last burger you ate.

Edit:

You do realize that non-compound bows would NEVER be able to pierce elephant hide right? You could have the tip of the arrow pointing straight at its heart at point blank range, and all you'd do is get trampled.

She obviously used a compound bow, and even with the increase in power she'd have to be fairly close. If I remember the anatomy of elephants correctly, there's something like 2-3 inches of hide before you get to even the muscle. You simply can't pierce something like that with a bow from any sort of large distance.

This amused me.

The reasoning for doing this is all over the internet, and even outside it. Why you cant see it surprises me.
I'm with the other guy. Enlighten me why the death of a single elephant rates more moral outrage than the death of any number of humans within 50 miles of your house (probably).
It doesnt. Its just that the woman left the animal to suffer, and she just decided to kill it because she wanted to. And she enjoyed just killing it, not hunting it because she needed to to survive, and probably not because she liked elephant meat in particular. (I say this in case you ask why we bother having any food other than just what we need to survive)

Touche for the skill and the kill, but the "letting it die overnight" part is...cruel, at the bare minimum. Arrow in your side, left to die for up to twelve hours. Just go up and shoot the damned thing and put it out of its misery at least. That wasn't a hunt, that was a hit and run and come back later. A hunt would have been pursuing the thing.

She probably gave the meat to the locals.

Also who cares if she killed an elephant for enjoyment?

I find it so odd. Everyone talks about how they would smash an insect just because it's in their house, yet they cry if someone kills an elephant. Both creatures are alive. Both of them feel pain. What makes the elephant any more significant in the eyes of a human?

Also our species is not overpopulated. Certain areas of the globe are overpopulated, but not the entire species.

*sigh* Would it have killed her to have at least shot it again? I mean, if she is an experienced huntress she should (I would hope) have some respect for the animals she is killing.

Once again I've lost still more faith in humanity.
I've got no faith left to loose. For all those saying how is it different to say a deer or whatever, it's very different because she is killing it only for sport, even worse to settle a bet. This means that the carcass probably won't be used for anything other than a mere trophy, oh and chances are it was probably endangered. And killing one does not constitute as culling, so shove the excuse up your arse.

Well, for one thing, the elephant didn't come into my home and start biting me... and who says that everybody squashes all the bugs that come into their home? I take them outside and put them in the garden.

Yes, but not everyone does that. For example, I guarantee that a lot of the people crying over the elephant would crush an innocent spider the second they saw it.

With millions of humans starving and dying every day, and the many more without clean water these kind of bullshit stories shouldn't even be news. One elephant is killed in a slightly cruel way....get over it.

I bet the Zimbabweans don't even give a shit. As long as they have food and aren't dying from malaria I'm sure they're fine with hunters coming in and stimulating what little economy they have.
