I thought that once you've opened something perishable, you should keep it in the fridge so as to delay its inevitable putrification.

When I was living in Japan it seemed a lot of people didn't bother refrigerating their mayonnaise either, which was particularly puzzling to me since I thought the stuff contains egg.
Like Dags90 said above, commercial mayo contains pasteurized eggs and is fairly acidic, so on its own it will not spoil if left out. Problems arise when the mayo becomes contaminated with other things (like the knife you just used to cut your chicken breast and spread the condiments on your crumbly bread or the potatoes/tuna/whatever in your salad).

Ketchup and mayonnaise do taste better cold, and from what I understand mayonnaise breaks down into a gross, oily (but still wholly edible) mess if left in the heat.

Precisely why it should be kept in the fridge.

Someone told me that you shouldn't keep bread in the fridge either. But it would go mouldy if you didn't, so clearly they're an idiot :p
Bread + fridge = dry, stale, nasty bread. Store-bought bread has enough preservatives that as long as you eat it at a rate faster than 1 slice/week you should be fine.

Also, everyone:

NOT THE SAME.

Sealed it can keep anywhere, when it's open I treat it like Tomato Sauce... because it's made of Tomatoes.

I usually grow weary of warm Ketchup, it scares me. I guess if it's in packets, but still those things don't keep overnight. Maybe your friends grew up in a frigid location, where some food doesn't spoil when left out. (Check if they keep blubber around the house.)

I don't put cold sauce on my hot food. You put ice in your coffee too?
I generally keep creamer refrigerated, yes.

Does anyone else find this thread strangely dogmatic?

anything typically has a shelf life or expiration date, ketchup is no different and keeping things cold means they last longer, again, ketchup is no different

other things that i keep in the fridge: jam or jelly, condiments in general, usually because i don't use them every day, so i don't go through them fast enough to justify leaving them out to spoil. the only known condiment that doesn't spoil when left out is honey, and despite that it's just easier to use honey at room temp.

Oh, you keep dairy in the fridge? That's great. You remember to zip up your pants too?

Kindly refrain from putting words in my mouth.
I wasn't being completely literal. But yes, I have in fact put ice in my coffee at some point(put it in soup, too)! It's great for cooling things down...like the creamer does!

Kindly refrain from catty comments.

Ketchup doesn't go bad, at least it never has for me. And anyway, it goes on hot food, why would you want it cooling that stuff down? Put it in the fucking pantry, man.

So my friend comes over earlier, and as I'm making us some sandwiches, he inquires as to where I keep my ketchup, to which I reply "In the fridge". Suddenly he flips the fuck out like it's some mortal sin to keep the ketchup in the fridge. This also isn't the first time one of my friends has asked me in a very complaining tone why I keep my ketchup in the fridge. It's very simple, I like my ketchup cold. In fact, I like a lot of my condiments cold. Ketchup, mustard, certain flavors of barbecue sauce, all in the fridge.

So, where do you keep your condiments, most specifically your ketchup, and why?
Ketchup is meant to be kept cold,it's not like a tomato-sauce that you put on pizza, just like Mizuumi said.Your friends are weird.

I like Heinz hot ketchup,it's sooo good.

I really don't mind either way, although I do kinda prefer it cold. Pretty much everyone else in my family hates it cold though, so majority rules; into the cupboard with it. It's never, ever gone bad though, I'm pretty sure that stuff's loaded with preservatives.

Ketchup is a perishable condiment. Leaving it unrefrigerated can cause mold and the flavor to go bad.

In the fridge. It is a sin against man to not keep it in the fridge
And here I thought I was out of sins. I keep sauce (tomatao, barbecue, chilli etc.) in the cupboard. That said, I have no problem with storing them in the fridge.

I keep it in the fridge, but now that I think of it, you see ketchup out on tables in a lot of restaurants, so I guess it doesn't matter too much.
Ketcup in restaurants proably gets used up much faster than the ketchup almost everyone on this thread keeps in their fridge.

In the fridge. The only time I see ketchup sitting out is at fast food joints. Do your friends live in a McDonalds or something?
