Who says she's trying to fix the problem? As I understand it, it was done to raise awareness.

I'm not saying this isn't poorly thought out or a grab for attention or whatever (I have no idea either way since I don't watch MTV), but someone saying she cannot solve the problem, or at least attempt, because she isn't gay and in the army, is just flat out stupid. Plenty of people of different backgrounds can rally around a cause that may have no direct effect on them.

Raising awareness = trying to fix, she's just a catalyst so to speak.

And I know people can rally and do those things, abit a weird concept for me.
But she's a celebrity, she could pick any controversy topic, wear a meat suit and justify it, "meat is murder", "the teenage workforce is treated like meat", "animal cruelty".
My phrase just pokes fun at her reasons behind the choice of topic.

Just wanted to take a small exception to this, not necessarily. Raising awareness is just that, raising awareness. It's what people do when they don't really know how to fix something, they do the next best thing that a celebrity in the spotlight CAN do, keep the problem fresh in people's minds. Make sure they don't forget about it.

With that said I'm not entirely convinced that Gaga isn't just trying to be Gaga, but yeah.

Hate lady gaga, her music sucks and is only in papers for her next break down or weird clothes she wears. I am not against people looking strange, take a look at death metal, goth etc. But she does it for the ratings and for column inches in the papers. She is not shocking. A meat suit? Who cares. Is any one really shocked? No one is. Funny how todays music industry is won by clothing and shock instead of actual talent and quality songs.

Musical tastes aside, are you inferring that death metal groups, etc. don't wear their outlandish outfits for image and hype? Certainly they don't get as much attention as Gaga does but surely their music would sound exactly the same whether they wore costumes or not, wouldn't they?

Death metal and goth have there lame ass costumes. But in the UK all you get is "lady gaga wearing really high heels" etc. Her publicity is based on her costumes. She wore these monster heels at a UK airport and fell over. Automatic front page for her fashion. All music has its trends whether goth or metal etc. But all she is known for in the papers is her fashion, not her music.

Ah, I see. Here it tends to be more of an even mix I guess. Her outfits do get her attention but it seems the fact that she announced the title of her new album (and supposedly sang a few lines from it) at the VMAs made bigger actual news.

I don't really like her CDs that much but I do get a kick out of her and she surprisingly has musical talent which is often covered up on the radio and tv. She can really play the piano if you listen to her live work. And I love those outfits. It reminds me of Peter Gabriel when he was still in Genesis.
