I really don't know much about Lady Gaga. All I know is that her music sounds like shit, so I don't pay any attention to her. However my brother absolutely detests her. He knows a lot about the music industry, since music is his passion. According to him, Lady Gaga just wears these outrageous outfits for attention. She's not really insane, she doesn't believe any of the messages she is sending. She just does this to get attention without actually having talent.

Yes she's doing it for attention. No she's not crazy. She's a fucking performer. It's not even a dirty secret, she fully admits she's over the top for publicity's sake. Anything wrong with that? Not everyone wants to be a 'serious musician' type. She's in good company, as well. Look back at Bowie, the NY Dolls, the glam movement and the punk movement, all of that was just as much about a striking and controversial aesthetic as it was about the music (despite what the punk revisionists may have you believe).

I'd say there is something wrong with lying about what you believe in, claiming to be representing a stance on an issue you don't care about, and making yourself look like an ass just to garner attention.

Just feels completely random. The "meat suit" will have no meaning unless she tells them what it stands for, completely making the suits point well....pointless when she could have told them from the start.

And why does she care? that's really my main point by that phrase, how can she fix a problem she hasn't experienced? it feels like a tacky grab for attention.

Who says she's trying to fix the problem? As I understand it, it was done to raise awareness.

I'm not saying this isn't poorly thought out or a grab for attention or whatever (I have no idea either way since I don't watch MTV), but someone saying she cannot solve the problem, or at least attempt, because she isn't gay and in the army, is just flat out stupid. Plenty of people of different backgrounds can rally around a cause that may have no direct effect on them.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. This whole Meat suit in support of gay soldiers feels disingenuous. I mean, that's what she is, admittedly, but when she's talking about something that IS important to some folks, it's little offensive to be so flippant about it.

I read in an article recently that said, despite what millions of teenage girls say, Lady Gaga is not original. That she is exactly 50% Madonna and 50% Marilyn Manson. I never really paid much attention to her, but this really does make me agree with this estimate.

Replace Madonna with Bowie and I'm with that. But I mean, who's truly original out there? Musicians don't exist in a vacuum. When someone makes music, it's informed somewhat by the musical climate of the world (whether they admit it to themselves or not). Either going with the climate, against it, looking to the past, etc.

True originality in music (or any art) is essentially outsider art. It can't be informed at all by the musical climate of the world, and thus it can't really say anything worthwhile (because it's completely ignorant of the 'world conversation' that's already been going on, sort of like the douche who walks up to a conversation at a party, and jumps in without knowing what the fuck anybody was already talking about).

Hate lady gaga, her music sucks and is only in papers for her next break down or weird clothes she wears. I am not against people looking strange, take a look at death metal, goth etc. But she does it for the ratings and for column inches in the papers. She is not shocking. A meat suit? Who cares. Is any one really shocked? No one is. Funny how todays music industry is won by clothing and shock instead of actual talent and quality songs.

Musical tastes aside, are you inferring that death metal groups, etc. don't wear their outlandish outfits for image and hype? Certainly they don't get as much attention as Gaga does but surely their music would sound exactly the same whether they wore costumes or not, wouldn't they?
