And yet, he probably has a vote ... just letting that sink in ;)
Oh-ho-ho, it's much worse than that.

Listen to what Anti-Christ Guy and all those other folks are saying. Don't get bogged down in the inane details or hilarious mistakes -- just pay attention to the overall feeling. These people believe that the social order has been overturned.

And what do Americans do when they feel that the social order has been overturned? Well, in the 1860s, for example, they created the Ku Klux Klan.

.....whoa... are you saying... we could end up with black members of the KKK? If we assume there are at least some black people who think the ways these guys do, its possible, no?

Silly thought, I know, but I would laugh my head off if Obama's presidence managed to increase equal opportunities within the KKK.

goddamnit America, your politics are completely fucked up. I never would have thought that electing a milquetoast centre-right president would cause such a backlash. I knew you had loads of wingnuts, but damn.

To be fair, you get that at pretty much any protest. Sometimes it's ignorance, sometimes people just lose track of the details in the heat of the moment.

I'm not saying there's no correlation or that these people really do get it or anything. Just that almost everybody stumbles a bit when you put 'em on the spot. ;-)

This article [http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2009/08/fascist-america-are-we-there-yet.html] makes a pretty good case.

The nationalism is there. The culture of victimhood is there. The obsession with purity is there.

not saying Obama was the best choice for the nobel peace prize (he himself has said something similar to that), but please don't perpetuate the myth that you have to do something big before getting it.

I think it's unfair that the video was just a compilation of people who didn't know what they were arguing about. Maybe if they interviewed somebody who had legitimate points of argument I'd take it a bit more serious.

The Nobel Peace Prizes aren't just about recognizing past achievements. The committee is aware of their weird mythic status and uses them to advance a certain political agenda.

Sometimes they use them to elevate someone who they think could achieve more thanks to the recognition -- this is the main thing that a Nobel Peace Prize actually accomplishes, and it's the reason why you hear about various previously-unknown activists who are still deeply enmeshed in whatever cause they're fighting for, sometimes sitting in prison or whatever, get it.

In Obama's case, I think the point is a bit more frivolous. This thing isn't a reward as much as it is a reminder -- Obama has a lot of power and the Norwegians want to make sure he lives up to his promises; if he accepts the prize and totally flubs it later, it'll be pretty darn embarrassing (and he can't not accept it would be really freaking embarrassing now). Also, more simply, giving Obama the prize now is a big "fuck you!" from the European community to George W. Bush.

By 1990, Gorbie had knocked down the Berlin Wall and allowed several nations to slip out of Soviet influence without a fight. That's really why he got the prize. I don't think the committee cared about USSR republics nearly as much as they cared about its satellite states (especially Germany), to be honest. The collapse of the Soviet Union itself was a big fucking mess initiated by a bunch of guys who really care too much for Gorbachev or his reformist ideology.

Well, I never realized it was a useless award. How do you get a medal of encouragement? Gay. But besides all that, how is he getting the Nobel PEACE Prize when he just authorized the deployment of tens of thousands of more troops to continue the occupation of Afghanistan?

probably by virtue of not being George W Bush. also, Obama's campaign made a lot of good promises that haven't been met - perhaps this would encourage him to meet some of them? who knows.

edit: for those who want to know, here is the nobel committee's reasoning behind Obama
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."
emphasis mine. it's because he's not George W Bush, and they want him to continue to be diplomatic in the future.

I personally believe in conspiracy. Small groups or families controlling world events and all that. I think more than any recent president Obama uses the hope he inspires in people to try to expand the government's influence on our personal lives. Next thing we know, there's gonna be posters of mustachio'd men posted on every wall.

I strongly doubt that. considering how much Obama has backed down from so many of his promises, he won't be getting much done at all, which is unfortunate. I really doubt that Obama would increase the government size any more than Bush did - although I wouldn't be opposed to it if it were done intelligently. Then again, none of this really affects me, so whatevs.

Firstly, no, I at think that these people are a disgrace to the Republicans, there are conservatives that have valid points, most of the people at these protests do not. The majority of the Republicans are smarter than that, in fact, there is even a good portion of Republicans that want health care reform.

Secondly, it is heartwarming to hear someone say something postive about Michael Moore for once. By which I mean, it is heartwarming to hear someone say something about him other than that he is an idiot, who is going to break into all of our homes and stab us to death, and we should murder and mutilate him. It just seems so... disturbing that even ordinarily rational people would say such things.
