I played the demo on PS3 expecting to be blown away, and I wasn't particularly impressed. The introductory sequence was really cool, but after that it seemed to be just running down very samey looking corridors and then popping out and shooting stuff. I'm not trying to be a troll when I say this, but it sort of reminded me of FF 13 to be honest. I was running down a hallway, engaging in somewhat boring combat, watching a cutscene / dialogue, and then repeating that.

On the other hand, the story and setting look pretty intriguing, and maybe the combat gets more interesting at higher difficulty levels. Also, that one woman (Miranda maybe?) is probably the hottest woman I've ever seen in a video game. But I was basically ready to buy it and then decided not to based on playing the demo. But hey, I'm happy for the people who disagree.

Why is everyone in love with this game?
Because it panders to the most common denominator.

I like the game, but that's just the way it is.

It's quite the ride though, even though it could, nay should have been so much more.

I'm playing FF13 at the moment...I'm in Chapter 10 of 11...and I have to say, in my opinion, the two are very, very different in feel. ME2 has choice...and FF13 (at least in Chpts 1-10) doesn't. The combat has totally different feelings as well. Also, FF13, for me, was very much: Walk, fight, cutscene, walk, fight, cutscene. ME2 doesn't function that way at all. There is no maneuvering in combat in FF13 in the way there is in ME2. Combat in FF13 is in special "combat space." Which is interesting...though I think I enjoyed the strict chess-like turn based combat of Enchanted Arms over the hybrid of FF13. Now, I'm not hating on FF13. I think it is a good game. It isn't my most favorite ever, but that's okay, and I am enjoying it. I'm interested in finding out how the story ends.

However, I don't think FF13 and ME2 are similar, really at all. So if you didn't like FF13, you could still like ME2. And vice versa.

High there, i hated the first game, enjoyed the second.

Weird i know. Its clearl not the best game right now. But the title fits because it pretty much describes modern games. They are simple as possible with less stuff such as say inventories and for an rpg it lack skills and equipable level based loot.

It defines how games are nowdays, graphics high quality presentation and.....non deep gameplay.

Hooray I get to spew more hate on Mass Effect 2.

I hate Mass Effect 2.

The story was filled with plot holes. Half of the characters are morons ("Well our enemy has laid a trap for us. Lets ask Shepard go investigate, even though they killed her and destroyed her ship without any trouble last time, and despite the fact that we spent billions of credits trying go bring her back to life derp"). Both female and male Shepard's voice actors are terrible. The combat was the some of the most tedious, boring, lackluster, shit I have ever seen. Also Bioware had some weird idea that if something didn't work well in ME1 it should just be thrown out completely.

Mass Effect 2 was dog shit. Well made, well presented dog shit, but still dog shit.
To be honest thats how i felt about the first game acting was borring the dialogues were yawn, combat was crap, the enemies just run up to your face rather taking cover, directon of the cutscenses was weak, maps were borring corridoers and the story? MY GOD how people say thats a good story? Or perhaps just me having watched ton of sci fi shows and seeing nothing new here. Also full of plot holes, feels like they developed what will happen next as they were working on the game rather writing a script prior to it.

ME2 was more action like so combat was less sucky, you had no inventory and dialogues were less of a bore or perhaps its the improved direction of the cutscenes, level design was more detailed and finalythey kinda "Rebooted" the bad guys and made a better story out of it.

In the end though, it was like "this is not good, lets remove it from the next game rather fixing it"

Pretty much how game devs work nowdays. So yeah me2 describes modern games and just like most games nowdays ME3 looks to be ME2.5 so far.

Buy Mass Effect 2 or...

THIS DOG DIES.
[The above is an image, no 'spoiler'.]

This is one of the best games I have ever played. Great story, compelling universe, good gameplay. Before I restarted, I had 27 hours logged, still had many stuff to do, and was never bored. PS3 gameplay at least flows very well, I assume it would for the Xbox too, at least.

Word of warning: If you DO buy this game, when you go to get the IFF (You will know) DO NOT GET IT IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER MISSIONS TO DO. It's the first of the end-game missions (save one optional mission afterwards), and you will miss out if you do it right away.

OFFT: How do you add text in the spoiler box (to delete SPOILER: Click to view, that is)? Haven't a clue.

I never play a game for a story but you know...
Mass Effect 2 is fun...if you vamp up the difficulty.

Gotta make it so every choice starts to matter. Like in Metal Gear Solid. Its only fun on the hardest difficulty (or second hardest).

I enjoyed every minute of it. Great pacing, great storyline, great voice acting. They make an effort to spice up the different missions so no two seem quite the same.

This is one of the few games I'm actually considering purchasing DLC for (something I *rarely* do for any game, no matter how good)

I loved it myself, so I may well struggle to offer you an unbiased opinion. I think you could justifiably call Mass Effect the best game of the decade, based not on gameplay, but on the script, story, characters etc. It's all been said before, but the game really is exceptionally well written. If you ever need to prove the artistic/literary merits of this medium, the mass effect series will not disappoint, even if you're not all that fond of it yourself. That said, there are many other games out there that could well take the title, though not all of them quite manage to be as epically proportioned as Mass Effect.

The first thing is the world(or galaxy... whatever). They've scoped out an entire history behind the series. That's not unique, but the history is actually interesting.
You know, I agree and disagree with this.

This is one of the few franchises whereI cared enough to go snag the supplemental material. Namely the two novels at the time. I was really interested in all this, but I still haven't bothered to finish ME2. Why? Most of the story is flat and boring. They flesh out the world, but not quite in as interesting a way as previous.

I'm not sure it deserves that title. It's a decent game, but the first is better, in my opinion.
Still, it's pretty good, and it is basically the big Sci-Fi franchise of this decade, so it gets credit with that.

Why do you need us to convince you? If you liked the first game, you're probably going to like the second. Not sure what else needs to be said about it.

Well, the gameplay is sort of like Gears of War, but just a lot more boring. Gears mixes it up with different weapons and shit, but ME2 really has none of that. You have powers, which is nice I guess. But I alwyas found ME2's shooting gameplay to be bland.

As for story...do you happen to like soap operas? Because that's what the Mass Effect series is. Everything is overly serious and overly dramatic. All the character's faces and movements are wooden. Shepard's voice acting is so terrible that it almost becomes funny when he tries to be tough or (my personal favorite) romantic. Besides the occasional squad member, I really feel there is no charm or humor in the Mass Effect world. (Besides that Hamlet thing, of course) Overall, It bores me to tears. If serious is your thing, cool. If not, I think Fallout 3 or Red Dead Redemption is a better choice.
