What are people's thoughts on Sentinel[Shep]? I liked it in the second game, but heard it was very different in the Demo.

I haven't read all of the responses and whatnot so this may have been answered (sorry in advance) but while resource mining, what happens if a Reaper catches you? Does it start a space-battle or is it an instant game over?
While I haven't intentionally let them catch me so I can't say for certain, but I'd imagine it probably cuts to a Game Over cutscene of some sort.
No cutscene, just a Critical Mission Failure.

Damn, I'm loving this game. The fact that the dialogue is slightly less prominent now is outweighed by the coherence and presence of the storyline, as well as the impact of all the desicions you've made in the series so far. Having fewer squadmates is balanced out by all the improvements to the combat system, and the fact that you bump in to most of your old squadies for a mission or two. And then there's the little things - the Citadel feels a lot better, a lot more like it did in ME1, there's learning that the decisions you made before are actually having effects on what happens, all sorts of stuff. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll get back to it.

If its anything like the Multiplayer, then the only downside is that activating Tech Armor wont refill your shields anymore. Thats about it, Sentinel is pretty much a tank support class.

Quick ME3 question posted here because the Escapist won't let me start a new thread thanks to useless captchawhatever.

I'm as bored as feth and Mass Effect 3 is out today: seems like a no brainer right?

Just a quick question before darting off to EB: what happens when I start the game with no save date from the first two? I completed ME2 for the 360 but eventually the saves were deleted for some reason now lost to me and I really can't be bothered to pick up another copy and complete it again so will I be able to choose a past when starting up ME3 or will it just have a default option?

The only choice you'll get to make is which human crew member died on Virmire. Otherwise, here's a handy guide on what the default New Game looks like. [http://www.gamefront.com/mass-effect-3-psa-what-to-expect-if-you-dont-import-from-me2/]

I've enjoyed the story and *most* characters so far- the only one I honestly don't like is James.
What he did at the end of the Mars mission redeemed him for me. He may still be Toadface McJerseyShore, but he gets results.

Anyway, keeping it spoiler free, manly tears have already been shed at the mission involving the Shroud. I can't wait to see what I'm like when the game's over. Actually, no, I can definitely wait.
I just did this part last night myself and all I can say is... :(

I kind of saw it coming but it was still sad.

Also, an earlier quest involving a certain alien strike team fighting an underground cave of other old alien buddies... they pull a "Shepard runs out of the rubble" on you for a certain ME2 character and I was all like, "FUCK YEAH! I knew that wouldn't kill him!"
My thoughts during that moment:
"That can't be him, the armor's the wrong color . . .
"Wait, no, it's just COVERED IN BLOOD! HELL YEAH!"

More hopefully spoiler-free questions - The DLC, how is it? Is the game lacking without it? Is the character still in the game (albeit not as a squadmate) if you don't have the DLC?

I'm curious to see how much of the pre-release rage was unwarranted.
Not getting the DLC is basically like not reading the books; it adds more depth and dimension to the universe, but it won't detract from the game if you don't have it. That said, it's pretty cool. And no, the character doesn't show up at all if you don't have the DLC.

Anyway, as to my own thoughts: I actually really like the auto-dialogue, especially the way that a conversation simply won't initiate if the squadmate has nothing new to say. I mean, it's basically just Shepard running through all the "investigate" options, which is what I'd do anyway.

The combat improvements I love, though it's true that the extrordinarily context-sensitive A button is taking some getting used to. For the most part, though, I'm finding that as long as I'm paying attention, it works the way it's supposed to. Only other gripe has been mentioned several times: Shepard's walking speed.

The characters are incredibly well done, far beyond even the stellar examples provided by the previous games in the series. They banter during missions, now, and on the Normandy they'll talk with each other over the intercom, even move around sometimes! And when you visit the Citadel, they'll get off the ship and do their own thing! They truly feel like real people now, not only defined by their respective relationships to Shepard, but also by their relationships to each other and the wider galaxy.

And then of course there are the little things: Kelly's replacement is a really awesome, likable character (actually surprised nobody's mentioned her yet), you can buy an auto-feeder for your aquarium, and Shepard doesn't walk around the Citadel in full combat gear. Was always a little annoyed by that in the last two games.

Oh, and every single sidequest relates in some way to the war effort. This alone is making the game incalculably more immersive for me. Everything I do feels like it counts, like it matters, largely because it actually does.

Overall, despite a few glitches here and there, absolutely blows the other two out of the water, both on a gameplay level and especially on a story level.

This is as close as you can get to a perfect gaming experience in my opinion. However, I haven't finished yet so hopefully the ending wont let me down, some seem to be dissapointed but ill have to judge for myself. Still i figure im 70% through and ive never been as invested and gripped by a games universe as i am with this.

Pros-

1-This is a true fans game. After playing Soul Calibur 5 and a lot of other games, i had been feeling abandoned by certain games for NOT being a "noob" it is refreshing to have a game that so clearly rewards players who have been fans from day one. The easter eggs, references, and winks to the games lore are greatly appreciated

2- As previously stated Combat has been greatly improved, some stages feel incredibly, others are a bit samey but there are plenty that feel hectic and everything is varied. At the same time they have managed to make it feel a bit more like a an RPG by beefing up the combat difficulty and making you be strategic more things. The "numbers" being back means that there seems to be a ryhme and reason to combat. Its no tru modern RPG, but its there enough to satisfy.

3- This game has been really polished, it blows my mind to think of the HUGE improvement that EVERYTHING has in this game. The graphics, the sound effects, animations, etc are all top end, when you think about it, Bioware has always had second rate visuals, but not anymore. It's also great that the "bioware face" as Yahtzee once put it has been slightly diminished as a result of the new polish.

Cons

1-Combat movment. So they added rolls and all kinds of stuff to the game and there have been too many times that i have accidently rolled into bullets when im just trying to duck behind my chest high walls. Also as par for the course, your team mates are still marginal at best. They cant seem to be effective for long periods of time without significant coaxing.

2-I personally love that they streamlined conversations but i know others will not appreciate that you dont always have a choice in things said to other characters. For me however, this greatly improves the immersion and there are still plenty of opportunities to have conversations.

3-Side quests. someone above me made the true statement that side-quests feel important because they relate to the war, but there should have been a better way to get into them other than overhearing a conversation and going out of your way to search for them when you should be doing other missions. With the idea in your head that lives are being lost on earth, it makes them seem both tedious and overwhelmingly constricting at the same time.

Overall this at a minimum, one of my best gaming experiences ever, il be 30 in a few months so ive been around and played a lot, and i havent pulled an all nighter on a game since metal gear solid. This gets my stamp of approval.

I'm pretty close to beating the game, I think, and I've had a blast so far - I stopped before continuing on so I could absorb what has happened so far.

Pros;

- Combat is excellent. It can get really intense at times and almost make you feel desperate. In some situations there is a lot of awesome combat banter and Shepard sounding frantic at times which was a plus as well. The cover system was hard at first, but once you get used to it, it's pretty smooth and a lot better compared to the previous games.

- This game is Mass Effect. There are a lot of references to what you did in the past two game, it all mattered. Also, to everyone else saying that there isn't that much dialogue and all that...that's false, entirely. Yeah, there is a good bunch of dialogue in the game, but it goes along with your characters alignment and I found it to be pretty good actually and smooth, making for a more realistic feel rather than having Shepard stare at the other person for a minute as you decide what to say.
- However, you of course still make decisions, and there are just as much times when you choose what to say as well. Overall, the most important part of ME to me has been the characters, story, and dialogue and deep into the game here I have encountered a lot of good moments, particularly the romance scene with a certain woman that loves poetry in ME1, it was really touching.

- They captured the whole galaxy at war feel well. Everyone is desperate and looking for answers. The game doesn't rush you to do anything but the urgency and off edge is there not just with you but all around you. Nobody knows what is happening and they are laying their problems on you. The main story segments in this game are great and well designed, some of the play on a few levels really pumped me up.

Cons;

- The graphics seem off in this one. The art direction is still top notch and there are a lot of environments that look great (especially the Citadel) but there are texture issues. I don't know if it's because they had to compress the game a lot or what, but I'd say that ME2 is the best looking game out of the entire series.

- Animations are a hit and miss. Sometimes they look good and sometimes they don't but its not a problem that you notice frequently. Lip syncing was bad at first but it improved vastly once you got off Earth for some reason.

- Jessica Chobot is fucking awful. Only reason I brought Diana Allers on board was because my Shepard is a super nice guy and I wanted all the assets. But shit...her voice acting is fucking ear grating, I have no idea why Bioware got that dumb broad to be in this game. Fucking retarded.

Overall, it's disappointing to see this strange minority claim ME3 as a failure. This game is epic. I didn't go in expecting certain things and holding the devs up to their promises - I went in expecting Mass Effect 3 and I got it. A lot of people were demanding things and that's why they were disappointed - the things they were demanding were to self-focused and inconceivable, almost retarded. (I want my romance with me at all times, many scenes devoted to love, and the perfect ending, and I want this to happen...etc.)

Mass Effect 3 is a great game. I look forward to beating it soon. And to all the people skipping out on it because of a ten dollar dlc - your sacrifice is about as noteworthy as the shit I flushed down the toilet a few hours ago, and I wiped my ass with ten dollars - that's literally how much ten dollars is worth, so grow the fuck up.

Sorta spoilery (no plot specifics):

By the way guys I beat it last night. Suffice it to say the journey was amazing until the last 5 minutes and by that I mean one of the best narrative experiences of my life... then the ending happen and... well, it left more than a bad taste in my mouth. I was so upset I had to call my girlfriend and vent for 30 minutes. So terrible. WTF were they thinking? Seriously.

The spoiler forums are on fire right now since a lot of people just recently finished the game. I seriously can't comprehend how they thought that was a good idea.

Also, why the fuck do the Reapers always claim that they are beyond our comprehension? Pretty sure the reason for their existence is stupidly simple... and simply stupid.

my first impressions is the game has a lot of dialogue. a whole lot. in fact last night as i was sitting there yet again listening to liara explain the plot to me, i said to myself that i wish this game would shut the fuck up and let me play.

that said, the game play is great. just got the DLC crew member, which lead to another conversation but getting him was great fun. the weapons especially sound fantastic.

note: i cannot wait to beat that smug look off of the illusive man's face - if you can do that in the game. i wanted to do that during all of ME2, regardless of my play style. oh that will be a glorious moment.

One more thing to add to the pile of ire. My game has been glitchy as hell, a conversation with Liara, had both characters stare at the fucking wall while they talked with their pupils rolled to the back of their head.

Spoiler free or not I feel that of all the me3 threads i've read this past month it's in this thread that I'm getting the most accurate feel for the game as the thread isn't just an exchange of ad hominem attacks and other rhetoric neatly dividing fans into biodrones and biohaters respectively.

It's just people trading views, whether it be positive or negative, and that's what I like to find on a gaming site.

Game is downloading so will probably be playing it by this time tomorrow, am rather looking forward to finally playing it.

The glitchiness is my #1 complaint with the game, and it's significant enough that it has detracted from the experience. A good 50-60% of cutscenes have at least minor glitches, from bizarre expressions/animations to skipped frames. And a few are just downright awful. In one, my Femshep was apparently holding two fingers to an earpiece, but the other two fingers looked like curled, mutant tubes, sticking out at weird angles, and one kept clipping through her head. This scene went on for a good 60 seconds, too.

And people laugh at BETHESDA'S quality control.

Still a fun game, mind you, and there's lots about it I really like. But it has a...slap dash quality to it at times.

Dammit, I just got the disk a day early, launched up Origin, placed the disk into the tray, installed it, went to launch it and... there was a release date check.
TEAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS
I'll just do it after school tomorrow I guess.
