Seriously? Can someone elaborate as to why the hell it's seen as bad to own a cat if you're a guy?

Well at least it roots out all the shallow bastards before I would have otherwise found out.

Male and its not weird its just very very strange ;). Dogs have character and loyalty whereas cats only come in for food and they expect to be preened. A dog would follow you to the ends of the earth but a cat, no chance.
On Fallout there isn't an option to have a cat as a sidekick - that says it all!

I'm male and have a cat, and it's for several reasons:

I was living in an apartment when I decided to get a pet, and dogs don't generally fit into apartments.
I work 10-12 hours a day, which is too much time to be away from a puppy.
My roommate already had a cat, meaning there was a feline already present in the apartment to keep my kitten company.
I'm not active enough (outside of work) to properly exercise a dog.

I'm being a responsible adult and NOT ruining a perfectly good puppy.

I want a cat. A very lazy cat that will curl up on my bed so I can stroke it. (randomly thinks of Catgirls)...

(Creaps out self)

You can't imagine roughly playing with a cat and being manly with one, all you can really do is stroke one or pick it up or other equally un-masculine pass-times.
Never knew a fairly tame cat did you. Mine loves wrestling with my arm and to a casual observer it might look quite brutal. It always pulls in the claws on command though. I'd post a pic if I could find it.
I've never owned a cat, my best mate's had a cat for about a year now and he does some pretty crazy shit with it because he's never hurt the cat so it still has absolute trust in him. So I suppose it can be done, just not expected.

Although I could very well be talking right out of my lovely firm arse.

Male. As-is the consensus on this board, I think you need to start meeting different people. The women you talked to are the highly judgmental/stereotypical type. IE: They see one person treating a pet a certain way, they assume ALL people treat the same type of pet the same way. And I'm sorry, but "at least it's not a ferret"? I'm sorry, but my brother owned 2 ferrets and he's more normal than I am.

You can sometimes tell a lot about a person by their pet of choice, but sexual orientation isn't on that list.

I have never before heard anyone talking about men owning cats as weird..

If you had like 15 cats it would be weird, but not 1 or two is not weird..

I like cats, and so do Hellboy!! Arrhh, that be manly yo!

Wow, people really seem to make a fuss about cats in your area :p

Noone i've ever met has considered a guy having a cat weird. Most people love them and want to melt over their cute fluffyness ;D

I guess its cause of the whole dogs are a mans best friend?? They're a bit more boyish in nature?? Whereas cats are a bit stuck up in nature :S

As an example; if a dog was to go to a sports event they might go to a rudby game or a football match in Scotland :) But, you would probably see a cat at Wimbledon or maby one of the big golf tournaments :D

A lot of people keep hating on dogs here, they only shit everywhere, bark at 2 in the morning or hump your leg if they are not properly trained/exercised/stimulated etc. I think thats the difference in owning a dog and a cat.
A cat doesnt require anything but food and water and is therefore an easier pet to keep, but a dog will repay you for all teh effort you put in. A dog is always there for you, a cat is probably shitting in next doors garden.
Also i have never seen a police cat, a bomb disposal cat or a cat that runs under german tanks with mines strapped to them (think that was forced upon them by the russians in ww2)#
Dogs are cool and are unaware of it. Cats think they deserve a cool status yet the only cool thing they do is hunt mice (it is quite cool though)

I'm a guy and I have 3 cats.

One of them is expanding as we speak, I think she might be pregnant. I may have 8 or more cats soon ^_^

Guess i'm shit out of luck, then. I tend to prefer cats, far less tedious than owning a dog in my experience.

I love all sorts of animals. And cats are awesome. Fairly easy maintenance, and you don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to let one out to go pee. But yeah I don't think those would be the type of women you would want to hang out with.

I don't really know why men with cats are seen as a bad thing but I suppose it's all really down to social pressures and cultural norms.

I've got two Jack Russel terriers, male and female. I don't mind cats as such and I have thought about getting one one day maybe, but my ex girlfriend had one while I lived with her and her house constantly stank of cat feces. Obviously she couldn't smell it because she was used to it but I'm used to my house smelling like, well... nothing.

That aside, I did like how soft and cuddly he was, but he never seemed to be cuddly all the time. My dogs are always ready to show affection for whatever reason and it's always enjoyable to have them laying across my lap while I watch a movie or something like that because they are just as cuddly as cats are.

The one thing that pushes dogs for me more than cats is the personality, this is all opinion, but I prefer just watching the funny antics they get up to, any website will say something along the lines of "Jack Russel terriers are the dog world's little comedians", which is true, there's rarely a dull moment with a Jack around, but I suppose you have to be tolerant of their behaviour to appreciate it or you'll just end up getting annoyed by them.

I also prefer the social gregarious, hierarchically organized, complex group life structure that dogs possess to the cats "solitary hunter", non-social life structure. Comparing one to the other is useless, though, since they're too completely different animals that have evolved in two completely different directions with different evolutionary pressures. Even when studies like this [http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-dogs-smarter,0,1159138.story] happen, it's still a tough call.

Male. I don't think it's weird. I've gotten strange looks from women I've brought home, but that's because of my personality. They expect me to have a snake or something.

I like and have both, but prefer the cat. Smaller, quieter, cleaner. However, he is the one cat that demands more attention than a dog. XD He wakes me up every morning purring and nuzzling against my chin.
