I don't really know why men with cats are seen as a bad thing but I suppose it's all really down to social pressures and cultural norms.
I've got two Jack Russel terriers, male and female. I don't mind cats as such and I have thought about getting one one day maybe, but my ex girlfriend had one while I lived with her and her house constantly stank of cat feces. Obviously she couldn't smell it because she was used to it but I'm used to my house smelling like, well... nothing.
That aside, I did like how soft and cuddly he was, but he never seemed to be cuddly all the time. My dogs are always ready to show affection for whatever reason and it's always enjoyable to have them laying across my lap while I watch a movie or something like that because they are just as cuddly as cats are.
The one thing that pushes dogs for me more than cats is the personality, this is all opinion, but I prefer just watching the funny antics they get up to, any website will say something along the lines of "Jack Russel terriers are the dog world's little comedians", which is true, there's rarely a dull moment with a Jack around, but I suppose you have to be tolerant of their behaviour to appreciate it or you'll just end up getting annoyed by them.
I also prefer the social gregarious, hierarchically organized, complex group life structure that dogs possess to the cats "solitary hunter", non-social life structure. Comparing one to the other is useless, though, since they're too completely different animals that have evolved in two completely different directions with different evolutionary pressures. Even when studies like this [http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-dogs-smarter,0,1159138.story] happen, it's still a tough call.
