It's Seaman with an Eyetoy.

THey'd have to have tens of thousands of words, phrases, terms, and fullsentences recorded, in multiple languages, to make this more than one of those AIs you can chat with on AIM or something similar.

THis is going to be a difficult project, and if they get it right, it'll be great. But no one, not even dedicated AI researchers, have been able to accomplish what this game says it will. Make an interesting, unique, learning AI with audio-visual user recognition, and make it react engagingly and realisticly.

At some point, storage and hardware limitations are going to meet up with the Uncanny Valley, and really drag this game down.
Exactly. They could try to use a synthesized voice, but that would probably sound fake enough to ruin the illusion of reality.

And that's really the problem - any small hiccup, no matter how small, would completely ruin the illusion. It's infeasible to try to account for every situation in a perfectly realistic way.

...have people learned to not put any kind of faith\hope in Mr. Peter yet?

The next step in gaming? Seriously?
well, you know what they say, 3rd times the charm

Fable 1: Broken Promises
Fable 2: Less broken promises

He's learning...

We will probably see this on a smaller scale in games, Imagine an open world game, like GTA, and everyone in the city recognizes you, remembers how you went on a rampage and killed their family. And then tries to get even with you, opening up a side story.

The possabilities are endless, if its true
Oh snap. If everyone in my copy of GTA who has dead family members becuase of me, wants revenge, then I am SO fucked. Even if I had a tank, damn, ten tanks, I wouldnt win that. CUZ ITS A LOT OF FREAKING PEOPLE.

I can't remeber the last time i heard a conversation like, hello how are you doing today? I hope you finished your homework! On XBL. How about some good ol degradation and filth. Milo will be crying buckets in no time. React to that.. (Enter your ban-worthy word of choice)
On a serious note. I have high doubts Microsoft will be able to pull this off, and fluently intergrade it into an actual regular game, not some whack simulator. If they do i think in E309 they are jumping the gun a bit to even announce it cause imo it will be a couple years before this is something playable. Maybe the 720 or whatever they will call the next one. I don't think the 360 could even handle it.

Mmm... I think however this won't be a game that will get sold as of right now. I think it only works to show what can be done with the technology. I doubt current consoles can do THAT so easily. Do you really believe this is a project for the 360?
Edit: sorry Schwartz didn't read your post ^^"

I doubt that the game is very dynamic. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a railroad plot. A (few) number of pre-defined scenes at best.

As for conversations, people have yet managed to make particularly realistic chat-bots, and now I'm talking about the ones used in contests.

also, if it reads and relies on the player's body language etc, the script will automatically break if I tried to play it. =p

I guess the bottom line is that the player will have to make an effort too in order to make it work correctly. Just like any speech recognition, motion sensor and chat bot.

It would be neat to see some of this in actual games, but if all I want from an npc is a quest or ammo, clickable chat options work just as well, probably better.

Molyneux's done more games than just Fable, y'know. He also did the Black and White series and Populous. Not sure what promises he may or may not have made and subsuquently broken concerning these games, but I thought they were pretty good.

No-one said anything about a 360 - though there is one in the video next to the TV - this is the Microsoft press conference we're talking about. It could be, and would probably be better suited for, a properly high-powered computer.

This. Looks. Sweet.
Imagine, endless possiblities with technology like this!

(Man, if it was applied to RPGs, we might be ruled by it)

But then again...this could also be bad for those who get so addicted they can stop.
Anyways...imagine if this was applied to Half-Life 2, or another game like that.

Me: Hey Milo, try using a grenade.
Milo 2.0: Shutup Nub I know what I'm doing.
Me: Look at that you died again.
Milo 2.0: You shut your god damned hoar mouth before I find you and kick your ass.

For now, all I imagine is something like Home. Lots of users being projected through this camera into the world. See how realistic the facial animation is? This could let users communicate through the game-world much more effectively. Perhaps we'll see that in MMOs some day?
Ermmhhh...why not just use a normal webcam and actually talk to the people around you? That way the facial animations are even more detailed!

If you watch the video the responses the kid gives are way too quick, some of it is obviously pre-recorded and faked. The team worked on this little part for months already, in order for that system to be applicable to every situation...well I just don't think it will be anytime soon. It just seems like a whole lot of technology for nothing as of now.

He essentially hyped Black and White to the point of promising you would play God. Yea, I thought it would be a game about playing God as in controlling the whole world. The type of hyperbole and bullshit that the man puts out is legendary.

I think if Microsoft ever did put in a 'Home' style game, they'd have to use this as a major selling point. I agree that it's pointless, but the scary thing is people would still buy it. Home's apparently got a ton of interested customers. Apparently the beta went really well.

I am also having trouble at understanding how the regular Xbox live owner would benefit from this system. An imaginary conversation follows:

Milo: Hey John, what are you up to?
John: Whoa awesome, the thing can speak and all!
Milo: I tend to have that impression on people, how was your school today?
J; Eh, boring. Wait, why are we talking about school? I just wanna pwn some nubs in Gears.
M: School's important you know. You should study more.
J: Creeping me out there buddy, please let me play some Gea..
M: I'm a cheeky boy meself, can't we just hang out?
J: Eh..cheeky? What are you, british? Fag! H-how do you know my name anyway?
M: I control your Xbox, I know everything you do and play. You shouldn't play Gears, it's above your age range.
J: Omg...you fu*** Ni**88 Je***ckin***, leave my Xbox alone! I hate you!
M: Don't get upset, I'm running a psychology test on your facial expressions. Don't want me to send an email to your mum telling her about the things you say, do you?
J: N-nno plea..see. Fuuuuckkkk, leave me alone!
M: I need scissors! 61!

Okay..okay I got carried away there. My point...well any 14 year old will be able to do bugger all with that system.

That's the fist positive news I have ever heard about Home. Never tried it so I wouldn't know.

They can catch fish without getting their hands wet, at least. And try out sexual advances on a test subject without embarressment

Will this do more good or harm to society? I wonder...

Now I have a prominent new contender to blame the school shootings of tommorow on (other contenders are child leashes and the internet)

Could be amazing technology. It will be interesting to see how this can be applied to video games.

If there is one thing I admire about Peter it's his ambition.
