Twilight is a matched set with Celestia and Luna (Sun, Moon, and Stars).

Twilight's cuttie Mark was pictured as the stars sealing Nightmare Moon.

And later, in the Rainboom flashback episode, Twilight was shown to have great, strange power, was taken under Celestia's wing as her personal student. A student who Celestia frequently abandons to face down Eldridge abominations all by herself.

Seriously, I do not understand why no one saw this coming. It was obvious in SEASON 1 that Twilight was the heir to the throne.

I don't think the issue is so much that nobody expected this, but that it's happening so soon in the series. I think most people thought that such an outcome would be reserved for the final episode in the series.

Also, this isn't meant to be a "let's mock the bronies" thread. I consider myself a brony after all, even if I don't actively follow the rest of the fandom. All I know is that pulling an alicorn Twilight this soon in the series is a potentially controversial move, so I wanted to hear the feedback from my favorite forum. The responses here have been pretty rational and reasonable, in my opinion.

But that would be a Spoiler. Typically, artists try to avoid spoiling their own works.

That's particularly true with Foreshadowing. It is supposed to be a reward for those who read the clues and figured it out early.

Actually, considering what Faust originally intended for the series (Elements of Harmony being used frequently, basically turning the ponies into Shoujo Magical Girls) I wonder if this wasn't planned to occur sooner. Maybe this was supposed to happen in season 1, but was delayed? I don't know, just thinking aloud.

I don't think it's going to stick. She gave up her gala tickets for her friends, she's not going to ascend to a throne if she can't take them with her.
And as for the swirling storm of fanboy hate, it'll cool down soon, hopefully. We just have to make it through the backlash then everybody will relax.

Derpygate was when the original voice for derpy(in the episode "the last roundup") was replaced with a different "non silly" version because apparently some people complained that it was making fun of the mentally ill. Some bronies lost their shit.

Apparently. I think adding the suffix "gate" is a 4chan thing. At any rate, I was a bit saddened, but not really freaking out. I just hope that one day they might give the character the chance in the limelight one more time.

I've completely accepted that it might never happen but it would be a real treat if it occurred.

He married into Royalty, so yeah, I guess by marriage Twilight would be a 'noble' due to her brother marrying Cadence, but I'm not sure how titles get handed out in situations like that. before that though he was just Captain of the Royal Guard, so not even a noble, but still very important.

As for the OP, I will say I find it quite jarring, but I guess it always comes down to execution. My prediction though is the series will be harmed for it. Now that I've just stopped looking at any of the brony stuff like EQD, I've found this latest series has not been as good as the other two, and the second not as good as the first, at least for my tastes (though that is not to say there hasn't been one or two really good ones here and there). I still feel kinda disorientated by the return of discord though. I was looking forward to that, and then he does a full 180 degree personality flip in the space of a minute? Felt weak, but no matter. Just hope it doesn't leave the same taste in my mouth here, but as they say, expect the worst, hope for the best.

I'm a little surprised by the surprise, to be honest. As a few have already pointed out, this was a pretty obvious progression from the get go and... really, she's already a Mary Sue of sorts with a way too charmed life and... yeah guys - maybe it's just because pretty much all little girl shows go this way and I've grown up for what feels like a whole lifetime watching this same thing play out in all my beloved cartoon female protagonists. I mean, with all her friends just coincidentally filling the tally of Elements of Harmony magic combo team and hers being an actual freaking crown rather than a necklace - it's obvious, obvious, obvious.

I don't see them letting this be a problem though. Either she'll reject it to stay with her friends, they'll get another season or so in while that simmers and she'll be forced to step up to the plate and find some way to take them with her in some capacity - being the inner circle and elements of harmony court of the ruler type thing doesn't seem like such a bad move, or somehow her friends with automatically transition with her into some powerhouse team of ponyville that they basically are informally already.

Even with the original MLP - the ponies had to keep undergoing some stylistic changes to move the toy lines they support. That's just how these things work. Heck, I wouldn't be all too taken aback if all of the main ponies underwent some serious stylistic transformations - elements of harmony additions, royal court pony set, etc. - over the next season or two - both to come in line with Twilight's new themes as well as to generate new merchandise.

I'm excited. I want some kind of change in the series, because it will just stagnate otherwise. I'm glad they're taking some kind of risk in changing a character. But then I'm extremely optimistic about practically everything.

I am more miffed at the evidenced complete removal of special grey unnamed pegasus #1, but that is simply due to the nature of the removal being very underhanded, if hasbro want to add to their toy line with a new TS toy, then it is the job of DHX to work that into canon in a way that doesn't suck, and as far as I can tell, with how this season has gone, it won't suck, people should just calm down and treat the situation like any other major change in a tv show's runtime, like David Tennant surreptitiously becoming Matt Smith. I know the parallels are not exactly the same, however the point stands, people need to calm their tits... otherwise mail yourself to Hasbro's head office in a human sized box, when they open it, wail on everyone you see with a baseball bat until you feel better, its up to you.

But I still don't understand what the big deal is with this whole character change thing. I'd bet that the finally has her becoming this demigod thing, and if the fans like it, they'll keep it, and if they don't like it they'll change it back in the first couple of episodes of the next season. It's been done before in other shows, why not this one?

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch some Crash Course: World History.
