I guess I wasn't clear. I've seen the show, I just never saw the quality of the writing being as good as you guys say. It's perfectly serviceable, just not to my tastes.

I just enjoy the DRAMA that pops up whenever something like this happens that sends fandoms into a fury.
Fair enough. I'm not one of those bronies who feel they need to "convert" everyone else, because that's just stupid.

Also, yes, it is very funny when people get mad about this stuff.
You know Dangit, I have to say, its interesting to see how far you've come. I remember when you had the 5-sec film guys as your avatar, then you made the thread about you joining the heard, you posted in other pony threads, and now you have a pony avatar. You've come far.
I still have the Brian Firenzi gifs. I keep thinking that I'll bring them back, but I'm pretty sure I spent a good 5 minutes making this Texas A&M pony, so it's staying for the forseeable future.

Also, I think the words you meant to use were "sunk low", not "come far". Too late now! :)

If this lead to the end of bronies forever, than come on princess twilight
Why does everybody assume that every time the fans act butthurt, it means the end of the fandom? Do you guys know how many times this type of thing has happened? Hell, the last time was 2 freaking episodes ago. This is routine by now.

This all makes sense once you realize that Celestia is, in fact, a Dark Lord of the Sith, and Twilight is her new apprentice.

Before I start, I just have to ask that somebody explain to me what Derpygate is.
Anyway.
I don't think it's going to stick. She gave up her gala tickets for her friends, she's not going to ascend to a throne if she can't take them with her.
And as for the swirling storm of fanboy hate, it'll cool down soon, hopefully. We just have to make it through the backlash then everybody will relax.
Derpygate was when the original voice for derpy(in the episode "the last roundup") was replaced with a different "non silly" version because apparently some people complained that it was making fun of the mentally ill. Some bronies lost their shit.
Ah, I remember that.
To be fair, I lost it a little bit too.
Anyway.
That's what we called it?
Apparently. I think adding the suffix "gate" is a 4chan thing. At any rate, I was a bit saddened, but not really freaking out. I just hope that one day they might give the character the chance in the limelight one more time.
Someone might want to look into politics/news a little more. The gate suffix most certainly isn't a 4chan thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scandals_with_%22-gate%22_suffix

As for the OP, I will say I find it quite jarring, but I guess it always comes down to execution. My prediction though is the series will be harmed for it. Now that I've just stopped looking at any of the brony stuff like EQD, I've found this latest series has not been as good as the other two, and the second not as good as the first, at least for my tastes (though that is not to say there hasn't been one or two really good ones here and there). I still feel kinda disorientated by the return of discord though. I was looking forward to that, and then he does a full 180 degree personality flip in the space of a minute? Felt weak, but no matter. Just hope it doesn't leave the same taste in my mouth here, but as they say, expect the worst, hope for the best.
I was meaning that 4chan and/or anon tends to name quite a lot of their spaghetti droppings with the suffix "gate". I am well aware of its naming of that in politics and general high school level history like the watergate scandal. I was thinking more about how it is used in stuff on the internet however. Thank for you the attempt at enlightening me though, it was thoughtful.

I agree with your thoughts on the show in general. Season 3 was...not the best, it did however have quite a few memorable episodes with some actual character development (mostly with Rainbow dash). I think the discord episode was...okay. While he did do a 180, they didn't exactly write themselves into a corner with the character, as he even outright said that he will probably keep up some of his antics; I suppose he will be not so malicious about it though, perhaps going the "poison joke" route style and comedy. I hoped the alicorn twilight thing was only temporary, but I suppose it might be permanent; but I have faith in (most) of the writers to do well with what they have.

To be perfectly honest. I am really looking forward to this episode. This will be interesting. Thing is, I can't understand all the butthurt over a lot of this. I recognize that "change is scary", but if it's handled right, it could be an amazing story. I will have a box of tissues handy at 0730 sharp Saturday morning.

On a less serious note; d'you know what I think will happen? Of course you do.

Twilight will be transformed, become immortal and powerful, she will realize that this will separate her from her friends by eons, and then will reject the power, immortality, and (above all) responsibility, and become a mortal unicorn again.

I'm taking bets now. (Not really, I'm po'.)

Not a fan, just came to this thread to see what all the fuss would be about.

I think people need to chill out, change keeps things fresh in any show, you don't want your favorite show becoming stale and boring because it never takes risks right? Just take a deep breath and keep watching, if people hate it, they will probably fix it in a plot later. It happened in the 80's Transformers, with the movie, something big happened, a lot of people got annoyed (I wasn't one of them) and then they fixed said thing later.

Bottom line, if the show makes less money after said change, then they will return things to the way they were.

Aw that'd be the best. I hope that's what happens.

After all, what's more important than friendship[small]immortality, limitless power[/small].

Does that mean the show will be over with? Would be nice to see the group of people I enjoy, work on a subject I care about. See Super Best Friends Forever [http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Super_Best_Friends_Forever_%28Shorts%29] for an example of this.

http://youtu.be/h7ging4Nqww for a link to the first one, since I don't know how to do that youtube thing.

Poor Spike, though. He's going to see them all into the grave before he hits adulthood anyway, and now Twilight chooses death over him?

I can't imagine the show really going into the implications of immortality.

So, that'll be ten muffins for my prediction to come to pass? Them's short odds, you know. I'll give you 1:2.

Just sayin'.

I laughed pretty hard watching that. At first I thought he was serious until he started looking at a dictionary and suddenly I busted out laughing. Very nice of you to show us such a perfect video XD "Twilight having wings is such a big deal, right?" Priceless.

In all seriousness, this is getting more heat (the show for having Twilight get wings) then the fan's reaction to Goku losing to Superman in the Death Battle. Seriously it's quite crazy how attached people are to characters or shows.. then again, I get immersed too so I don't blame or judge them.

People are pissy about that? I thought they summed it up nicely at the end with 'that's what happens when you put some one with out limits against some one how is all about reaching and surpassing them, only one has limits to give'

To be honest, my entire reaction to this revelation is to pointedly look at all the panic there was over 'executive meddling' when the Royal Wedding episodes were revealed. How could they possibly shoehorn in another alicorn and Twilight's brother?! Then the Season 2 finale aired... and most people loved it. So really, I'm not worried about this at all. I know some people are running around like headless chickens, but really, I'm being cautiously optimistic about this. Like you said, the writers have dealt with this sort of thing before. Why should this be any different?

I'm a major critic of A Canterlot Wedding, though admittedly it isn't because of executive meddling but of the sub-par writing. Too many plotholes, the pacing was a mess, and the new characters weren't developed enough. It's actually a big reason, along with all the flanderizing and lack of lightheartedness of Season 2, that I'm concerned about them mucking something like this up that could so easily fail hard.

My main concern is that Twilight will overshadow her friends with a change as big as this. The fact that the show has always focused on all the characters is what draws me and many others to the show, along with the lightheartedness of course. With Twi being put on a pedestal that none of her friends could ever hope to reach with this, I'm concerned that the show will focus on her more at the cost of the rest of the Mane 6. Until now, the show has deliberately avoided making Twilight and her life more important than the rest of the main cast and their lives (with the arguable exceptions of the Wedding and Crystal Empire episodes, where that very thing is a common criticism of them), but now that Twilight's becoming the Equestrian equivalent of a queen it'll be hard to keep the others as important or as focused on. The last thing I want to see this show do is turn into The Twilight Sparkle Show, though only time will tell if that actually ends up the case. All we can do is wait and see.

Doesn't mean she can't become immortal in other, more sciency ways.

Well...this is kind of stupid. Though it does make a little bit of sense.

Celestia and Luna didn't always exist. Which means their has to be a method to create alicorns rather than them being born somehow. It makes Cadance's existence a lot more probable. Seeing how it goes from "there can only be two in existence" to "we can make more". Except that ends up making each one less special.

I see plenty of people raging over this due to...well...god, why is this happening? I mean, its a joke around the fandom that Twilight is such an OP mother Fucker that she might as well be an alicorn, but this is taking it a bit far. This also brings with it a series of unanswered questions.

1) If alicorns live for 1000's of years, and both Celestia and Luna still look to be in their prime, why do they need another one?

2) Candace looked like a teenage in flashbacks of the season 2 finally, but them looked like an adult. So how does the aging process work for these things?

3) If Celestia is Princess of the Sun, and Luna the moon, what is Twilight suppose to be in charge of? Candance is apparently princess of the Crystal kingdom. But then...

4) What was Candace's purpose before the Crystal empire came back? Was it destined to happened?

5) If Luna was going to be gone for 1000 years, why didn't Celestia train a unicorn to take her place in all that time?

6) If random people can be part of the royal family, are Celestia and Luna even really related.

7) Why the fuck is blueblood a unicorn and not an alicorn? Does Celestia have family members decended from before she became an alicorn?

8) Why is Candace the only Alicorn not associated with a force of nature?

I could go on, but the point remains...

This seems like a bad idea. With RD getting close to being a wonderbolt, and Rarity having business in Canterlot, this seems like the big thing that's going to separate the group.
This is really the only problem I have with the whole thing. One simple question: Why? WHy are they doing this, what do they have in mind? I can't help but feel like this hasn't been well planned out and that they are writing themselves into a corner here. Twilight becomes an alicorn, okay, then what? You always have to be asking 'then what' when you have a series, or else you don't have a series anymore. So this seems like it could be very problematic for the people making the show, and when shows become problematic, they tend to get worse and then disappear.

We'll have to wait and see though.

oh hello bronies. what's up? what's that? twilight as an ali[small]corn?[/small] ..........ABANDON SHIP!!! *dives under coffeetable with hand above head).

really though , i sort of saw this coming. the internet kind of spoiled it for me. to be honest. i was hoping it was celestia going insane that was the season final. you know, since they made discord of all people/ponies/what ever he is[footnote]EDIT: so it turns out he's something called a "draconequus"[/footnote] has been made a good guy. celestia goes berserk, Luna takes control over equestria, discord and Luna have a double duel with psycho celestia in the end. maybe i am just nuts. but i would like it that way

Personally, I'm okay with this. As far as big changes go I personally believe Discord being reformed was far worse, and rather than despairing over this I'm actually quite interested.

I'd like to see where they take the show with this direction. From what I've seen of recent staff comments and articles, it seems like they are going to be able to do a good job of this. Ultimately though, as with all things, it would be best to start judging once we see how things play out.
