I always love listening to the people who got angry about the dedicated server drop, because so many of these people apparently missed reading one of the major reasons why they were dropped: overhead. They were dropped because in the current economy, they were going to be too costly to keep running. Yes, it sucks, but if the company has a choice between keeping them and bankrupting or not, and not, then more power to them.
I love talking to the boycotters and then derailing their entire arguement by asking them, "So wait, you're angry because the company refuses to bankrupt itself for your convenience?"
And watch their heads explode.
Hmm this seems a bit odd.......
I would expect you to understand the situation by now, but I guess not. This is especially interesting since people have cracked the game and created their own dedicated servers.
You see, dedicated servers don't cost Activision a dime.
They cost the people running or donating to the server money.
A dedicated server, can of course, be run by the company at their own expense to provide better connections. However, most are run by separate individuals not associated with the company.
So why did Activision try to stop this?
Well you see, when you run your own server Activision can't set any restrictions on you. This means you can have user-end mods, maps, etc.
But without dedicated servers where do you host user made maps/mods?
You don't.
Suddenly the company is the sole provider for all things Call of Duty.
Previously Pc players would not pay for DLC Map-packs because we could simply make our own. Furthermore, mods, different rule sets, and the community kept the game fresh.
Why pay for DLC when someone is already producing comparable material for free?
So Activision shut that right down.
Didn't you get a clue when people cracked their way into creating dedicated servers?
Or did you just believe that they were stealing money from Activision with their H4x0r skills?
