refreshing and original as the CoD 4.
When did CoD4 become refreshing or original? I wasn't aware having the exact same premise as half of Tom Clancy's stuff (boring, modern-day stuff in the Middle East or some forest in the Ukraine) qualified something as "original..."

Speaking of which, CoD4 gets my award for being the most overrated game ever. As I've said, modern-day terrorism in the Middle East and involving nukes. Yawn. You mean the same thing I hear about on the news every day that's the premise for have the shooters coming out now. Involving simplistic, repetetive gameplay with minimal fun-factor and virtually no replay value? I'll pass. Halo may be a tad overrated, but at least the gameplay wasn't so damn linear and repetetive that I got bored of it after a week. At least it had a cool art style with memorable characters and weapons and an amazing soundtrack. I'll take Chiefy any day over some generic, grizzled guys in Spec-Ops gear.

Every time someone goes on about MW2 being overrated, I find myself agreeing with them... Then they try to tell me how great CoD4 was. What the hell!? They were the EXACT SAME GAME, at least on a gameplay level. The campaign was just different levels with no core changes, and the multiplay was the exact same thing with a few new gimmicks stuck on. Someone explain how you can love one and hate the other when they're the same thing?

Might as well just change the title to "MW2 sucks"....

OT: I think Battlefield: Bad Company and TF2 are pretty overrated.
I agree with Bad Company, but TF2? I hope you mean only on the console, I can understand what you mean then. If you mean on the PC then I must destroy you.

Half Life 2 and GTA4 are all pretty overrated.

On the one hand yes everyone does say Halo so one could argue it can no longer be considered overrated...on the other hand ODST was one of the top ten sellers of the year and garnering wide appraisal despite its poor value (Full priced expansion pack)

So yeah. That, Modern Warfare 2, Grand Theft Auto 4, Silent Hill (Excluding 2...there is hype for the others, right?), Metal Gear Solid, Fallout 3, and Banjo Kazooie. I liked all of them mind you but the sales numbers, media appraisal, and cult status just don't match up to my experience of these titles.

All of the Call of Duties AFTER 2, I guess. But everyone's saying that.

Portal.

It doesn't deserve the obscene amount of praise it gets.
Actually I'll have to agree with you. See, I had heard of Portal years before it came out and got excited because it looked like a creative and interesting game to me. It came with the Orange Box and it was the first game I ever bought for the 360. I played Portal (and I loved it) but I ended up liking Half-Life 2 much more. Portal is still fun and creative, but the reason why I probably enjoyed it so much is because I bought it before all the crazy hype that it got. I had played and beaten it before I heard almost all of its jokes quoted endlessly on the internet. If I had played it for the first time right now, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I had before the hype. Hype kills games.

It gets praise for the same reason movies like 'Paranormal Activity' or 'Primer' receive admiration. They produced a decent product without a large budget or resources.

Lets not scoff at the indie teams; of course Half-life is a better game, the amount of work put in to it shows.

On the other hand, Guitar Hero/Rock band, are the most overrated titles for me.
While I can have fun, I feel like I am simply wasting my time.

Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII are quite far up there. Final Fantasy VII is one of my favourite games of all time, but it's terribly overrated all the same.

most games get overrated, not hard to overrate or under rate a game. but for me, Halo. I like them for killing time once in a while, but the hype was way to much for that game.

Why not? Portal was amazing and every bit of praise it got was deserved! Portal created the "THE CAKE IS A LIE" meme that became as big as all your base are belong to us. Portal definitely deserves every bit of praise.

You suck! Obviously you can't see it because it's not your type of game, and unfortunately this means I have to loathe you

I have to wonder how a game as unassuming as Half Life 2 could be considered overrated. Games that actually get hyped up advertising campaigns and overenthusiastic devs talking out of their arse on the other hand... Oblivion, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, GTA IV, Halo, MW2 and Prototype all qualify as overrated.
