While the point is valid that screaming is pretty unpopular with the general public, popular music is less of what 'catches the public's attention' and more of what Popular Artist X, Y and Z decide to release next. It gets played on the radion, the public is exposed to it and they listen to it enough to like it.

That would be the 'at first I hated Lady GaGa's new song, but it's grown on me' feeling would be.

It's been like that for a long time. What's surprising is the record sales this year. Due to the increase in piracy and single-track purchases, some more talented bands haven been on the record sales charts this year. The Arcade Fire, The National, Vampire Weekend, Spoon are among some of my favorite who have been high on the charts this year (I know Vampire Weekend and The Arcade Fire debuted at #1). Pretty cool.

Meh. So people like that stuff. Who cares? Thanks to the internet, music charts aren't really that important anymore.

I suggest you just ignore whatever you don't like in the charts and go find stuff you do like. It's what I've been doing for years.

the reason most of this music is shit is that people are lazy.they dont care whether a song is good or not, they just label it "good" then move on.they dont put any thought into it whatsoever, and they dont bother to look up anything good.because theyre lazy, lazy, fuckers.the record labels know this,so they put out the cheapest most easily produced crap out there, because they know that almost everyone will just eat it up like plain tofu.thats why i stick with older bands, with only a few that are from this decade like "King Hell!","Anthelion", "Austrian Death Machine" (technically a side project, but i'm counting it),"Equilibrium",and a fuck ton of other unsigned bands floating around on Youtube.

I see no purpose in this thread, other than the OP venting about other people's favorite music.

I haven't even seen the list and would be willing to bet that I would hate every song on it. But that's my opinion. It's my opinion that that music is bad, and it's somebody else's that it's good. I don't care. I don't care if people have different tastes in music than me. I have my favorite artists/bands/groups, and other people may have theirs. There's no problem with that. It's OK for people to be different. Trust me. Most of my friends don't like the same music as me, but they're still my friends. Why? I don't care what music they listen to.

Music is an art. It's a person's individual expression. If you don't like it, then you don't. If you do, then you do. It doesn't get more simple than that.

I hate Ravel's Bolero. Why? I find it repetitive and uninteresting. I don't have a problem with people who like the piece. I have a problem if they try to force it upon me, but that's a different story. I can only listen to that melody a few times before I get tired of it. Other people might like it, and that's OK. That's what makes it an art. It speaks to people differently.

It would be a very boring world if people all liked exactly the same things.

thats what annoys me, its the fact that the majority of people like this stuff. this is exactly the reason society is collapsing and the reason we have recessions. its because most people are mindless sheep who like only what they are told to like or because its played alot
In other words "I'm upset because most people have different taste in music than me and I can't understand why".
I don't think it's that at all. I think it's a gripe with the pop crowd in general. Let me use an example.

In 2006 I'd heard Basshunter's 'Boten Anna' on a video I found on the internet. I showed it to a bunch of friends and 1/10 liked it. Fast forward one year and 'Now You're Gone' was released, which uses the exact same beat. Now 9/10 friends now like it.

Agreed.

OT: Seriously, tastes are different for each person. if you don't like it, don't listen to it.

Mmmm i'd say it's different for some, I here quite a few songs on the radio that i hate (Tinie Tempah...I'm looking at you!), but i do admit that the popular artists are played a hell of alot more.

I didn't recognize a single song on that list. I stopped listening to the Radio on any station that plays popular music a long time ago.

I understand that people have different tastes, but all this new stuff has simple lyrics, synthetic beats and voice alterations and most importantly they are all SO REPETITIVE!!!. Even if you think it sounds good, it is just mass produced, has no heart, and takes no talent. Easy money.

After hearing certain covers [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvmIzxO0-n4] of certain songs [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy0gTIo0vQQ], I started to notice that the music itself is actually pretty good.
Ignore the people singing it (looking at you more, Bieber) and it's not all that bad.

Still prefer stuff like the Halo theme and Scott Pilgrim game music.

For what it's worth, a years time is quite a bit of time for someone's musical sensibilities to change and evolve. Also, when people hear music they're not hearing it in a vacuum. They're bringing their own previous musical experience along like baggage. Ten years ago I wouldn't have given Bob Dylan the time of day. Now I've grown to appreciate him for the great musician he was. Probably the most important musician of the last century. Who knows, maybe you layed the foundation for them to end up digging his stuff a year later.

Of course there's the real possibility that they dug his newer song for more mundane reasons. Like because it was a hit single or something. But it's unfair to assume that this is always the case. A lot of people enjoy what's on the radio because they think it's good. Not because "that's all they hear".

Oh no. People don't like what I like. Society must be falling apart.

There are plenty of radio stations out there. Find one you like. Listen to it. Ignore the ones you don't like.

Now carry on, please.

ehh...w/e. You don't like screaming, and I don't like soulless synthetic beats that all sound the same coupled with the auto-tuned voice of a dime store prostitute. The only difference is, the type of music I like isn't shoved down your throat everywhere you go. : \

Nothing, as you are entitled to your opinion.

OT: I have not heard any of these songs, and as such can not say I do not like them.

Did you break both the volume and tuning knobs off of your car stereo?

This is something else. People who don't like popular music aren't listening to the radio anyway. I used to have over 200 CDs ready to go in my car, and now I have my iPod with 2 weeks worth of music. I haven't really listened to the radio since the 90s. The only time I hear today's pop is in clubs. If people like me aren't listening, they aren't going to tailor their broadcasts to us.

So that leaves the people who are more passive about what music they like (which is fine, not everyone has the same degree of intensity in anything). Some people can just learn to like whatever happens to be playing.

I was not just referring to the radio. Just out in public, on TV, in movies...it is everywhere

Also, when someone like Devin townsend does make an accesible metal album [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addicted_(The_Devin_Townsend_Project_album)] that's actually good no one buys it. Bah.
Maybe that's because a metal fans idea of what's accessible and everyone else's idea of what's accessible are two very, very different things.

Listened to the first couple of tracks actually, and they do absolutely nothing for a non-metal fan. There were some vocals in the background of the first song that were actually singing, so there's that I guess.
The first couple of tracks are the heaviest, by far. If this [http://tinysong.com/fgmB] isn't an accesible metal song I don't know what is.
Not only is Hyperdrive more accessible, but Honestly I'd put it more firmly into the "Metal" Genre than at least the first track (I didn't listen to the second). Coming from a metal fan, Addicted the track didn't do much for me, either. The album as a whole seems somewhat interesting, though. As for other types of metal that are radio friendly, how about some

Basically, there's plenty of good stuff out there that could be mainstream, but for whatever reason isn't -- and I know, calling Nightwish non-mainstream is debatable, but that song is about the most radio friendly thing to ever come out of a metal band, and it's a shame it doesn't get any play.
