While the point is valid that screaming is pretty unpopular with the general public, popular music is less of what 'catches the public's attention' and more of what Popular Artist X, Y and Z decide to release next. It gets played on the radion, the public is exposed to it and they listen to it enough to like it.

That would be the 'at first I hated Lady GaGa's new song, but it's grown on me' feeling would be.
Mmmm i'd say it's different for some, I here quite a few songs on the radio that i hate (Tinie Tempah...I'm looking at you!), but i do admit that the popular artists are played a hell of alot more.
I can appreciate that, hell there are times I've found myself singing songs and wondering where the fuck I've heard it. Popular music is catchy (kinda like an STI). But you have to admit, every new artist is usually come into popularity with a catch, such as having their song feature another popular artist or having assosciation with a popular artist.

Saying this, I do hear the ocassional song on the radio I like, the most recent one being a Vampire Weekend song which caught my attention.

Metal has always had a sort of "f*ck the corporations, f*ck the world, f*ck the people around me" attitude surrounding itself. This is also the same type of attitude that breeds music piracy. Metal will never top any sales chart, because most so-called "fans" won't acually pay for the music.

Stick to the Chart you like? Like i do, which just happens to be the Top 40...

ehh...w/e. You don't like screaming, and I don't like soulless synthetic beats that all sound the same coupled with the auto-tuned voice of a dime store prostitute. The only difference is, the type of music I like isn't shoved down your throat everywhere you go. : \
Well acctualy mine isn't shoved down my throat. If i here a song, and acctualy like it, ill listen to it, if i hate a song, i won't...

I don't like EVERY popular song, it's just the majority of songs i like, it's not shoved down my throat, i usually just find it, i rarely listen to Radio now and mainly just search Artists i've heard about from friends or Updaters on Facebook along with random searches on the TV (Hell i have so many different kinds of music on my Media player you probably wouldn't believe).

So really it's my choice, although for the majority of people, it is just shoved down their throat i admit.

Easy listening, addictive, generic music. It's called mass appeal. Not everyone is a "music elitist"; as some like to call people who passionately like music, most people just listen to said addictive, generically "easily listend to" music", because it's just that, catchy and ticks most "auditory pleasant" boxes.

No matter how much I would kill to hear Crystal Castles, trance or musicals on the radio, it just won't happen because it's specialist, non generic music that does not have mass appeal. Oh, and isn't in "music fashion".

If I said I didn't like rap, so many of you who do like rap would swarm on me and ask if I even have a rain. Then I could ask you if you like Metal and get a blank stare.

There is always something we like that everyone else hates. Like Halo or Metal Gear Solid 4. Or the new Dante from DMC(5). Or rap. Which I hate. A lot.

Ignorance is bliss.

I don't give a fuck about their happiness. Listen to what you like and let others do the same. Do you want me all up in your face about your music taste? No? Then don't get up in other people's for the same reason.

Did you break both the volume and tuning knobs off of your car stereo?
I was not just referring to the radio. Just out in public, on TV, in movies...it is everywhere
Just wanna point out that I live in a large metropolitan city, I hardly listen to what is on the radio, and I've never ever felt like popular music was being shoved down my throat.

Listen to what YOU enjoy, support the music you enjoy however you see fit, and for the love of god stop whining about what others enjoy.

its the fact that the majority of people like this stuff. this is exactly the reason society is collapsing and the reason we have recessions.
So the downfall of the technology age is caused by people liking different music to you. Thats... logical.

Besides, we need most people to keep working away like good little termites, or then we have recessions and the downfall of society - the essential infrastructure supporting our unsteady lifestyle needs people like them... to allow people like you.

This is why I only listen to one radio station: It only plays classic rock, and has Bob and Tom.

My god, people have differing music opinions to you?!! RAGE!!!!!!!! Don't they know all pop and R&B is crap? That's not a generalisation, that pure fact. People should listen to more Iron Madien and Metalica blah blah blah...

*SIGH*

Yes people like different things to you get over it. There is some good stuff in there, Katy Perry, The XX, Example, The Manic Street Preachers are back in the charts! And besides who really buy singles these days anyway? Look at the album chart and things are far more positive, Biffy Clyro, Mumford and Sons, Interpol, Arcade Fire. Just chill the fuck out.

I think that you're the one with the problem here. You either have high standards, uncommon tastes, or you just like feeling like your taste is more refined than most people. In conclusion, lighten up.

This is why I don't listen to radio. I don't care what's on it, because I know it sucks.
thats what annoys me, its the fact that the majority of people like this stuff. this is exactly the reason society is collapsing and the reason we have recessions. its because most people are mindless sheep who like only what they are told to like or because its played alot
In other words "I'm upset because most people have different taste in music than me and I can't understand why".
Well...not really. There is a shitload of people who listen to lady Gaga simply because she is on MTV or The Voice or whatever, not because they find the music amazing. Same thing with a shitload of people wearing a certain brand of clothes because its popular. This has little to do with taste and a lot to do with trends. So, you are wrong in that rewording of yours.

And yes, this annoys me too...but I choose to see it like this:

OT: If the majority listens to some garbage/wears some stupid clothes that means MY interests in music/clothes/whatever will be less polluted by crap.

1. Make music that appeals to the masses
2. Put it on the radio
3. People like it
4. ???
5. People on the internet rage on Justin Bieber Youtube videos about how his music is shit compared to Metallica and Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin and all the other bands that ma(d/k)e good music.

The radio will always piss off people who don't like popular music and are into the "niche" genres. Then again, where I live there is a metal station. They play Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Guns 'n' Roses and other old crap all day.

The bitching is complaining about how their favorite music isn't on the radio..

Okay, I love these two songs.

Which one will be more likely to be played on the radio for the masses?
Obviously, less people like Amduscia than Missy Elliot. Missy Elliot wins the radio play and the money.

I don't like it either but you know, there is something called "having a different taste". Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it sucks.

Agreed, still didn't stop alice reaching the top of the NME Cool list.

And you know what not all radio is shit, you just have to listen to at the right time or even the right radio station, during the day or the mornings it will probably be top 40 stuff but there are loads of different Radio One DJs with different tastes in music who will play more specialist stuf during their slots.

Majority of the public dont care for music, and just want some of the same boring samey music that the record companies put out because they know they will sell, so most of the pop music today is just a product, like beans, pop music today is beans

There are some talented folk out there that do poppy music but ... mehh.
