dont get me wrong there are a few good songs there but most of it is shit

just have a look, here is the top 40 hits in the UK
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/singles

i like travie mcCoy, yolando be cool (only because it makes you feel like you are on holiday) and brandon flowers. other than that its just a pile of shit

i dont know what the US chart is like but i imagine its similar with shit like FLo RidA etc.
The US chart is a bit obscure. They dont tell us whats on it. Its barely even mentioned. The radio is still the same generic pile of balls though.
Oh except my local radio station has a ska/punk show from 10-12pm on weekends. Thats the best we get.

Smells like 4chan in here. Seriously, what's with the music elitism? I expect this shit on youtube, not the escapist.

The only band on there that isn't completely atrocious is Maroon 5 only because I liked their first album... and I still consider them a guilty pleasure...

I just hate the way the radio plays the same song 10-20 times a day for about 7 weeks, so even if you liked the song it gets on your tits after a week.

It is really bad with repetitive songs, listening to Rhianna (and her immensely repetitive songs!) say "rude boy" 30 odd times in a single song is bad enough, hear that same song 10 times and thats way to many "rude boys".

(pick any Rhianna song and listen to it and just count how many times she says the title or one word, like umbrella or rude boy)

I mean, how many "pop" songs have ever been made? Millions, easily so why play the same 40 day after day after day after day .....

Although I have been shocked when I hear something like paramore come on.

I like pretty much every song on that list. What're you gonna do now?
Nothing, it's your choice if you like that sorta music.
Personally I can't stand anything on that chart, This is why I use an Mp3, I can listen to the music I want to hear, not what Radio stations play.

You don't like what they like so they're mindless sheep. Brilliant logic good sir.
I would respect the people who like that top 40 list with legitimate reason but if you like it just because it's catchy, then it's being mindless. No wonder there's a band like Brokencyde coming out.
I'd say that's good enough of a reason. You don't have to be able to write an essay on why you like a song to say you like it.

(partly in response to the thread title)

Hey guys, guess what? This is all opinion. Trust me, I find Lady Gaga just as annoying as most other people on The Escapist, but that doesn't mean the music 'sucks,' as 'sucking' is incredibly subjective to begin with.

Though, some of you posting here share the same view I do, so good.

*shrug* some of those songs are pretty cool.

Yeah, and?

I suppose the majority of the population are...sheep? Perhaps. I have no idea. Maybe it's just that these songs aren't all that bad, and you just don't like this particular music. That's possible.

Yeah that was phrased a bit elitistly (I just made that up) but whatever, I'm tired.

I don't listen to the radio (or watch T.V. because of this reason also) because barely any of the music I like is on there. Call me when Waves starts playing.

A website with a bit of a reputation for being home to a few elitists?

OT - After talking to a few friends about this topic, I can now say that it's all about the profit. The radio plays what they want to sell or just what sells. That's the music industry.

My only complaint is that there are no stations that play what I like. Even the music on sky have a pretty poor selection, with Scuzz ocassionally playing a few bands I like.

I've posted this same exact thread myself. I know not to make that mistake again because a lot of people seem to find it annoying, but I think the logic behind popular music is just make something catchy, even if people like you and me who have more diverse tastes thinks it sucks. It never lasts long either, within a year you might never hear those songs again. But even if it is awful, at least we know better than to listen to it (on purpose, that is)

It's worse in the US. Nearly every song on the radio sounds exactly like the last one and nearly every one in auto-tuned garbage. The only place I ever hear good music over the radio is in Barnes & Noble (which recently introduced me to this band [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru3NBulbdc4]) and that's not even the real radio. But of course, if you don't like it you don't have to listen. Let the people consume their garbage.

This is why I don't listen to radio. I don't care what's on it, because I know it sucks.
thats what annoys me, its the fact that the majority of people like this stuff. this is exactly the reason society is collapsing and the reason we have recessions. its because most people are mindless sheep who like only what they are told to like or because its played alot
In other words "I'm upset because most people have different taste in music than me and I can't understand why".
Well...not really. There is a shitload of people who listen to lady Gaga simply because she is on MTV or The Voice or whatever, not because they find the music amazing. Same thing with a shitload of people wearing a certain brand of clothes because its popular. This has little to do with taste and a lot to do with trends. So, you are wrong in that rewording of yours.
I'm sure some people get into it because they're told to. Just like I'm sure some kids get into metal because they're excited at the idea of rebelling and growing their hair out and wearing lots of black. Doesn't mean it's representative of the entire fanbase, does it?

Lady Gaga for instance is actually critically praised for what she's doing in the music world right now. By folks who make it their job to look at all music, and understand the context it's coming out of. Intelligent people who've been looking at music big and small for the last thirty to forty years.

But I'm sure you'd just accuse these folks of being money hats or having bad taste too. I pride myself on giving all music it's fair shake, whether or not it's on the radio.

Huh. I didnt accuse ANYONE of having bad taste, simply having other motives for listening to the music than actually enjoying it so much. I can repeat myself just to make it clearer: "This has little to do with taste and a lot to do with trends.".

Neither did I say it was representative for the entire fanbase, but I personally believe it to be representative for a "shitload" of the fanbase.

Oh, and I do give all music its fair shake, thats the only way to find out what you like (in any circumstance), and I really dont like 99% (of what I have heard...I am not saying I have listened to 99% of all music ... >.> ) of a few categories, like pop, anything from India or most country stuff.

The problem with a lot of pop-music is that a lot of it is so carefully produced to be a hit that it all sounds the same. It is engineered music, almost mathematical, instead of actually being the soulful product of an artist. And most times it shows...or hears...

I'm not sure what people you are referring to that praises Lady Gagas "genious" (costumes?/cleavage?/visual prostitution?) but I have not seen nor heard anything from her (or most pop-artists for that matter) that doesnt say: "I'd be nude if it wasnt rated M/AO". They are the prostitutes of art and I despise them. Luckily I dont have to give them attention and I deliberately and thoroughly avoid clicking on ANY "news" that has to do with Lady Gagas new dog or whatever (with a pic of her and her dog nestled neatly between two bulging breasts).

Whoever you might dig up to praise Lady Gaga with genious I'd probably just laugh at anyway. Music is experienced individually and no amount of argumentation will make me hear the "genious" of anything Lady Gaga craps out her mouth. The only opinions of music I MIGHT give weight are those of my friends because I know their tastes are good/similar to mine (I did that on purpose, I know tastes cant really be described as good/bad).

Don't like it? Don't listen to it.

Also, obligatory "grrr how dare someone not have the same tastes as I do?"
