Actually, according to Wikipedia, pop music developed in the mid 1950s. So, while I do have to concede that "pop music" is a specific genre distinguishable from "popular" music, the distinguishing characteristics are pretty much as I outlined - referring far more to aspects of intended audience, recording/production, and general tendencies toward formula than any specific style or genre. It is, however, worth noting that pop seems to be the somewhat parasitic cousin of rock music, borrowing from its development. Which, at the end of the day, reinforced the contention that Jonas Brothers are rock just as much as 50 cent is hip hop.
What Wikipedia says developed in the 50s is 'popular music,' which came along with the birth of Rock'n'Roll, as opposed to 'Pop Music' which came with acts like the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and Brittany Spears.

Fair point saying that Pop Music's characteristics are more production and business based, although I still say there are some musical characteristics, such as the almost religious use of the I-vi-ii-V chord progression, and the A-B-A-B form, that define 'pop music'.

When you are talking about stylistic origins, I can see 'Pop music' coming from more the Funk, R&B, Motown side of things, rather then the Rock side. I also see acts like Jonas Brother as Pop Rock, which is pretty much pop (catchy melodies, repetition and consistent structure) with guitars and a bit of balls. You see it in Punk music as well, with bands like Blink 182 - They keep the energy and (somewhat) agressiveness that comes with Punk, and add in the catchy hooks.
Nothing is Punk about blink 182

As far as music goes I wouldn't say I particularly hate any one genre since almost all of them have one or two songs that redeem them from being an absolute pig swill but I must admit to finding rap rather annoying since they can never seem to find anything to rap about other than "Knocking up hoes" and "Pimping" (I typed these correctly since rappers also seem to have the worst English, bar none). As for the other genres I tend to avoid would have to be that Scream-O music where you can hardly understand a bloody thing they are saying because they sound like someone just dropped a refrigerator on their testicles. Country has a few good ones but hearing the same stories over and over again and them constantly saying how to fix it but never actually following through makes it a bit redundant after the ten billionth time. I tend to prefer listening to Classical musics or those that are a mix of Classical and Rock such as Apocalyptica, Within Temptation, Nightwish (Before they got the new singer who has a voice way to high compared to the original singer), and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, if you ever get the chance to see them in concert I would recommend it, it's amazing.

I can't stand country music, but then again, it can't really be called music.

Call me crazy, but rap can be genuinely great at times. I especially like the albums "Straight Outta Compton" by NWA and "Enter the Wu-Tang" by the Wu-Tang Clan.

If you would, excuse a boy for a second as he defends his Hip Hop.

I remember way back when I went through that phase. "Rap is Crap!", "Retards Attempting Poetry!" "GARRGGGHHH", etc. But I've noticed something recently;

Not all Rap/Hip Hop is shit.

Sure, I started off slow. Fort Minor, Gorrilaz, Optimus Rhyme, but over the years I've grown into Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Notorious B.I.G., and Kayne. The point I'm getting on my way to explaining is...

Rap isn't bad,

I mean, I can assure you that 90% of these people listen to Eminem, because he's the shit. And Your defense for liking him would be "Because he means something when he raps." Well, I urge you, look beyond what you hear on the radio. What that is called is "Crunk Rap.". And that is shit. What you want is Gangsta Rap, or just straight up Hip Hop.

N.W.A., Run-DMC, Slaughterhouse, D12, and the before mentioned Optimus Rhyme all are rap groups that put ridicilous amounts of work into their craft, listen to what they do, and the way they weave rhymes around each other is amazing. Notorious has some of the deepest Raps I've heard, (I suggest Hold Ya Head ft. Bob Marley, if your gonna go check it out.). Jay-Z hates that Auto-tune and shit that's covering the Radio right now, Dr. Dre has some of the sickest Beats behind his songs you'll ever hear. Kanye is the SHIT.

Now, I just want you to go listen to some songs and then come back to me and give me dignified points on why Rap Is Shit.

I'd want you to listen to
Hold Ya Head - Notorious B.I.G. ft. Bob Marley
Express Yourself - N.W.A.
Dirt Off Your Shoulder - Jay-Z
Beautiful - Eminem
Shame In Your Game - Beastie Boys
Fight Music - D12
It's Tricky - Run-DMC
He's Got Game - Public Enemy
I Ain't Mad At Cha - Tupac
Get Back - Ludacris
The Watcher - Dr. Dre
Yesterday - Atmosphere
Gone - Kayne West ft. Consquence and Cam'Ron

Please, I'm eager to hear your argument.

Hip Hop, Rap and a good chunk of Pop (e.g. Britney Spears, Lady GaGa Pussycat Dolls etc.) are all truly awful (no offense) and I just can't stand listening to them. If I walk into a room where it is being played, I do have the compulsion to leave - quickly

every single genre will have at least ONE really good band.

Country music is just terrible all around. I just can't stand any of it. I would listen to hours of hip hop before I listened to one hour of country. But that is just my opinion.

any Post, most Nu-Metal, Screamo, Goth and Emo, and Disney. Also majority of pop and that new fake R&B shit that they made.

I can't stand corporate-manufactured BS like Hannah Montana or the Jonas Bros. But beyond that I like all genres of music.

Thrash and Death Metal (Slipnot suck), Gangster rap (anything talking about cars, bling, guns, shooting other people with said guns, and treating girls like f4*k sticks isn't worth listening to), Can't stand Morrisy he was better with the Smiths (greedy sod killed that band though), and the only track I liked was "What time is now".
Man, don't say that. Slipknot is *not* death metal. They're not even close. You could call them metal, I guess, but you'd have to append "talentless" to that (Corey Taylor and their lead drummer are the only semi-good ones, I think). True death metal lies in Cannibal Corpse, Sinister, Death, Disgorge; the hardcore folk. I'm not saying I'm a huge fan, but Slipknot is just scratching the surface of a magnificent genre.

Anyway; I personally can't stand any type of modern music. Most of the stuff I listen to is from my childhood. Come to think of it, the only bands still releasing material that I listen to are BTBAM, Protest the Hero, Dream Theater, Dream Quest, Fall of Troy, the Number 12 Looks like You, Children of Bodom, In Flames, Killswitch Engage, Rise Against, and Tool (off the top of my head).

Disclaimer: when I say I don't like something, I mean I don't like about 99% of the stuff it contains.

I dislike indie rock, pop rock, pop punk and similar: Three chords and a catchy tune worked for The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, but not for you (exceptions: Green Day has some pretty kickass songs, and the early Blink 182 songs bring nothing but good memories)

Emo, screamo: no exceptions here. It's like an aural holocaust.

Country: I love Johnny Cash, and I enjoy several of Toby Keith's songs, and there's nothing wrong with a good Dixie Chicks banjo solo, but most of the songs out right now are closer to pop than they are to country.

Electronica: While chill-out, trance and some house are OK, the very heavy techno stuff is just a 10-second loop made by an epileptic chimp in FL Studio.

Metal: this one will be a bit more specific. I love love love several metal ensembles: Korpiklaani, Tengwar (and pretty much all folk metal), Hammerfall, Iron Maiden, Týr (OH MY GOD TÝR), etc. But stuff like Dethlok, Slipknot (yeah yeah, it's not metal, bla bla, shut up), Cannibal Corpse (I can't begin to describe how awful they are), In Flames is unbearable. I get it, you want to sound dark, but no need to tune your guitar to B tuning and growl like a monster instead of singing.

Er... Tarja was a soprano*. The human voice doesn't get any higher than soprano (at least in the modal register). The problem with Anette isn't her pitch, it's her timbre.

* and while most would say she's a lyric soprano, she does venture into the dark lands of coloratura in some songs.

dude, post-rock is fucking amazing.
I concur. If it can make me feel without words, then it is very well done. Post rock seems to get me feeling the strongest emotions.

I've been trying to listen to various forms of metal, but no matter what I can't seem to find anything I like so I give up. I'm just not a metal head.

I loathe every song you, yes YOU have ever enjoyed. If something ever moved you to tears, it causes me to cough up bile in sheer disgust.

Apart from that, I really enjoy all types of music, to include metal, death metal, country and rap.

I still have to say that Tarja's voice is definitely more soothing and nicer to listen to than Anette. Anette in most cases sounds like a child and if I want to listen to children I'll listen to a children quire or I'll listen to Disney... *shudders*
