I don't think there's a universal rule for this. Different rules for different genres. In folk and country lyrics for example the lyrics tend to be what people pay attention to and the music is kind of the background noise. In dance music its more about the beat and the thumping bass and the lyrics are the background noise.

Okay so you say Rap used to be good, I produce you a good piece of Rap from this decade that isn't full of swearing and about smacking bitches up or smoking weed and you say you don't like it. Me thinks you're a troll or you nolstagia is making you say bull
Go on then, make a rap piece. Impress me with you dazzling rap abilities which you seem to claim everyone has
Oh and yeah ignore the rest of my post because you have no response
But he's a metalhead and cannot possibly produce rap. How dare you ask him to stoop to the level of common radio fare! (Sarcasm, by the way)

Rap is tough to do well, just like playing a guitar/drums/whatever is tough. He's just trolling for an argument, and he got one.

I agree totally. Music is important in music, not lyrics!

music can work on its own, lyrics can work on their own, but when they can effectivly complement eachother, then you have a REAL peice. the best example i can think of is this celtic artist in portlan oregon called HANZ ARAKI look him up, his voice is a thing of beauty

Surely. Hip-hop = poerty?
I think not. Half the time Hip-Hop artists either slurr words or make up new ones entirely just to make a 'ryhme'.
Also, him saying the whole 'suprise suprise' thing is just annoying. I hate people like him.
Let me guess, now someone will say how they hate people like me?
I know =D
Makes waking up in the morning that much better for me.
Ohh right.

I like hip-hop, you like Metal so we can't get along. How silly of me.

The truth is, once you get past the sea of crap that is top 40 hip hop, you can find some ama... Nahh screw it, you don't want to hear it.

And I don't care that you hate me, nor do I hate you back. Why would I hate you, you've made me laugh more then anyone has on these forums for awhile.

Take care =D
A good post, my man.

I like pretty much Metal and Drum and Bass, but I can easily get along with someone that listens to Hip-Hop. I even like some myself.

As long as they aren't douchebags about genres they don't listen to (like the guy you quoted).

Plenty of good lyrics would make decent poetry.

However, poetry needs to be stand alone as just the written/spoken word. Lyrics can hide behind musical accompaniment, so they don't need to fulfill a lot of requirements that make good poetry, and consequently don't. In some cases, the need to fit music will make them inferior as poetry as well.

A rough comparison would be to consider the difference between a taking good photograph and a making a good film or TV show - a good photographer could probably be a good cinematographer and vice versa, but good cinematography is not necessary for a good film.

I don't find hip-hop to have great lyrics, but there must be some reason why people like it. Pop music is pop music for a reason. Some genre's of music have their meaing driven by the lyrics whilst others focus intensely on instrumental parts. The feeling of the song is usually a combination of these. Hip-hop and rap focus almost entirely on the vocal component, as the background usually consists of light drum and bass.
By way of poetic lyrics, anyone should look up Something for kate or Paul Dempsey, because that man is a lyrical god.

Music is important. Lyrics are also important. They're both equal. I like mostly rock, but I'll listen to a few "rap" songs as long as they're not that popular hip-hop crap. You know the ones, where the lyrics include something about smacking hoes, or getting money, and in the background all you can hear is obnoxious drum beats, and maybe a second guy screaming something to reflect what the first guy said. "SMACK A HOE FOR HER MONEY, ***** YEAH! ALRIGHT" "***** YEAH, ALRIGHT!" I hate those.

I mostly listen to ProgRock, ProgMetal, and like, anything alternative and from the 90s.

I find lyrics important to my music as it gives it meaning and emotion, I also like songs which tell a story or put across a message hence why I like singers such as Meatloaf, Harry Chapin, Jonathan Coulton, The clash, David Bowie ect. Its not just Rap which can contain lots of lyrics. But that's just me others may feel differently.

Rapping (also known as emceeing, MCing, spitting (bars), or just rhyming) is the rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes, wordplay, and poetry. Rapping is a primary ingredient in hip hop music, but the phenomenon predates hip hop culture by centuries. Rapping can be delivered over a beat or without accompaniment. Stylistically, rap occupies a gray area among speech, prose, poetry, and song.

I agree with the original statement, lyrics without music just end up being that: lyrics, which is what poetry is made of. Hell, you can of course sing lyrics and it WILL be music as long as there's harmony to it, but I mostly agree, rap focuses heavily on lyrics above everything else.

I'm not flaming on the genre at all. I never said anything about smacking hos and shit, that was all you my friend. I like very little rap and hip-hop.I even put up with some r&b.
You response to my post only shows that you are an eminem fanboy and couldn't stand up the chance to defend him, or something along those lines.
I simply don't like the genre.
I hate people that try to start fights over this shit.
Yes because I suggest one song by him that makes me a fanboy
Okay then, Hollywood Undead, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre. Jesus Christ you are getting on everyones nerves
Youdon't like that genre? Then why the fuck are you posting against people who do like it
Hell I like metal, classical, jazz, rock in all most forms and country because I can see that each one takes talent to do
You thinking that anyone can do it is laughable
Now shut up, stop trolling and open your damn mind to other tastes

Stop arguing people! Can't we all just get along and sing sounds round the camp fire?? D:

Music is music. If you like it, if it makes you feel like music should, lyrics don't matter.

In songs that feature lyrics prominently, they are an essential part of the song. There are many instrumental songs though, for which lyrics obviously do not matter, as none are available to do so.

Rap songs, even if the lyrics are 'yo yo yo, I get some drugs, and bust some caps, and the bitches and the hoes, and the niggers and the crackers, word.', it's still poetry. Just not GOOD poetry.

Rapping involves talking...fast.
that's it.
Tell me how that compares to someone picking up a guitar and playing a solo, or how it compares to someone sitting behind a drum set and actually doing something creative?
Rappers all do the same fucking thing, they make up a rap, then either get someone to make a drum beat to it, or just use a fucking program to do it for them.
In the way of music, they're lazy as fuck and lack true talent.
Some people like them, I don't.
Get the fuck over it.
