Texas is the state that most of the Americans in this thread seem to blame as the source of all of the negative racist, red neck stereotypes that permeate the international community. This is, quite frankly, unfair. Because our last president (who was not the brightest bulb on the tree) was from Texas, it seems to give people even more justification to mock the state. "Look at that! The only high profile Texan that we know is a moron! They must all be morons!" Even more alarming is the fact that President Bush was not, strictly speaking, stupid. He was not that smart, and it is likely that Dick Cheney had an inordinate amount of power, but he wasn't a moron. All most people knew about him was what his enemies (his many, many enemies) said about him. Poor "little" Texas suddenly had a whole knew reason to be derided. It was the place were the seemingly (okay, more than seemingly) incompetent President had once been governor, and were he retreated in his leisure time.
Meanwhile, they still had the rest of the old stereotypes to put up with. They were still viewed as "hicks" and they were viewed as backwards folks who reminisce about the glory days when Texas was a sovereign nation. Let's address these, shall we? Texas is by no means a State full of hicks. Three of the top fifteen largest cities (population wise) in the United States are in Texas. No other state can compare. On the other hand, three out of the fifteen lowest populate counties in the US are in Texas, including Loving County, the smallest county in the United State with only 67 people. The best answer would be that Texas is a highly varied state, and contains sophisticated urbanites as well as hard working ranchers and farmers. In other words it's a real place. They are also the single largest buyer of textbooks in the United States. This means that the content of most of the textbooks in the United States is dictated by the Texas education system. Who's uneducated now? The second part, that Texas wishes it was still its own country, or wised to remain that way at the time, is patently false. Texas begged to be admitted to the union after the Mexican-American war, but the idea was unpopular in the north, as Texas was a slave state. They only became the Republic of Texas because the united States would not admit them as a state. They were finally admitted by President Tyler... three days before he left office, a time usually reserved for pardoning one's friends of various crimes. So even in the old days, Texas was unpopular. Apparently, worth fighting a war over though. We fought to take it from Mexico after all, but then didn't want to let them in, and you know, assure them that the Mexican army wouldn't just march in there and take it back. Maybe they're allowed to be a little proud of the fact that they kept that from happening, without much help from the United States army (such as it was.)
The last thing I would like to leave you with, before I get "On-Topic" is this. I know four people, all of whom I consider friends, who hold backwards views on race. One has mentioned they know someone who would be cool "if he wasn't black." At other times, they have discussed the merits of the KKK, and talked about the many valid points of white supremacist groups. Guess were I live? New York. One of the bluest (liberalist, for our international viewers) states in the country has produced a fine crop of ignorant racists, proving that Texas is not the only place in this country that produces ignorant, racists, homophobic, anti-Semitic, and sexist people.
Finally, getting on topic, this kind of thing is more than a little disgusting. However, it is not surprising. I suspect if you were to look further into this matter, you would discover that the girl who was raped had little money, and was stuck with a poor lawyer. Its sad, but true, that success in our legal system is highly dependant on money.
Hm. I seem to have produced a wall of text.
