My friend and I had a conversation about this.

He said that everyone is against N. Korea so that they are toast and don't pose much of a threat.

And I said jokingly, "I don't think they are in it to win it."

Kinda scary.

And the Chinese helped North Korea in the beginning of the Korean war because we attacked them first. in fact the americans and Chinese had a treaty that stated that as long as the americans stayed out of china the Chinese would stay out of Korea. Of course the US general at the time didn't care and went into China anyway and then China supported the North Koreans and we ended up about where we started. If we didn't invade China there wouldn't be a North Korea.
Re-read your history books. The Korean war started when the North, with Soviet backing, pushed across the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea. Pushed 'em WAY the hell back, to Pusan harbor (correct me if I'm wrong, please), before US forces landed. Then the US-ROK forces pushed the DPRK back up into a corner. That corner was called China. China did not look favorably upon this, so tossed in some troops of their own. Pushed the US-ROK back to about the 38th parallel before someone said "all right, enough, everyone to the peace talk table."

Old USSR records show quite clearly that the Korean war was started by the North. Despite this, DPRK history texts say that the US started it for some very convoluted reason. Something to do with us Yanks hating Korea (which was bull then, and still is).

The best way to deal with N. Korea is to let them tilt at windmills and otherwise ignore them. America needs to pull the 50k soldiers off the N/S Korean border (S. Korea has twice the population, 48 times the economy and a functioning manufacturing base, they don't need our protection), safe a few dollars, and laugh as N. Korea rattles it's plastic lightsaber at an enemy it is incapable of reaching.

I'm just happy because of
a. I'm S.Korean
b. They don't intend to have a war with S.Korea
also I have a request: Please say N. Korea because it sounds like you guys are saying Korea as a whole. S.Korea didn't do anything!!! Also I hope if they do have a war they at least get the innocent Koreans in N.K out of this.
Uh, ya, listen, not trying to scare you or anything, but Kim Jong Il's main bargaining chip has been the safety of South Korea. We don't want him firing the artillery canons he has aimed at Seoul and other strategic locations. We like you guys.

Wait, how long has there been a USS John S. McCain? Back on topic, the little fuggers just want attention. Let's use the world's banhammer, aka, a big ass nuke.

From what i've heard they aren't a threat to the US, due mainly to the size of their nukes (weaker than the hiroshima bomb)which can't fit on missiles, and their missiles can't even reach the US anyway.

But unless NK uses a nuke first the US probably wouldn't due to various war crime issues, in which case it would end up as a ground war in which case it could be equal considering the results of the vietnam war where thousands of US troops were killed and no clear victory (if a victory at all).
also they have a combined 2 nuclear weapons and only one poses a threat

the other nuke is the size of the davy crockett explosion
it has less than 1 kiloton explosinve power!

if a nuclear war does happen north korea will be known as the great korean glass field

Ya know, we have ICBM's that can annihilate an ant hill from 2000 miles away. There isn't any reason Kim Jong Il is still alive.

Posturing. Too many allies to compete with if they do anything serious.
They do have that, but if they have nukes like they are claiming, they could possibly be a mild threat if they were to launch them at major cities of the world.
yeah but korea has no delivery sytem to launch those nukes if there even is a considerable stockpile

what are they gonna do throw it at us?

I think the major fear is that another war may deteriorate whats left of our foreign relations. Sure it looks like it's not a problem now, but what say you if China decides to back them up. I say that because with densely populated cities all within firing range they are very much a threatened by NK. Add the fact that, generally speaking and historically speaking, Communist dictatorships often defend one another (dying breed i guess) and we could have one hell of a situation.
Not really likely. To be honest US/China relations are pretty good right now. And thats even more evident as Us diplomats are meeting in China to talk about North Korea, not the other way around.
Well China is a big beast and war can make a mess of everything. Plus countries have been known to change sides in wars before. Either way it'll work out. I was just commenting that could get worse based souly on a tiny country's decision.

Everyone thinks that Kim Jong Ill isn't crazy enough to attack us. I think he is. He has listened to his own propaganda long enough he probably thinks that he really is a god or divinely protected or something. As far as missiles are concerned, I doubt that they would reach their target, but I wouldn't be surprised if they try anyway.
their missiles are total ass

they couldnt even send a rocket in to space for god sakes
without icbm's going into low orbit they wouldnt be able to reach long distance countries

the only countries they threaten are

south korea
china
japan

and those are easily defendable from nuclear missiles with the stationing of anti missile missiles.

besides if 1 nuke is used or fired from north korea to alaska...

just think about MAD the country is done
north korea will cease to exist and will be quarantined for the next hundred years because of the massive ammount of radiation from the nuclear blasts

He never said anything about winning now did they? Just "wiping the aggressors off the globe". They might just decide to launch everything at the US at once, perhaps some at her allies and watch ye olde nuclear holocaust begin.

And living in Australia we are in striking distance. Yippee...

Also, now quaratined for a hundred years. Chernobyl was a nuclear reactor with a fraction of the power of one nuke and its got something rediculous like a 1500 year quarantine. One teacher told me that a now-a-days nuke could see an area quarantined for several thousand years.

Well, if they attack, they probably wouldn't get any support. I'm pretty sure that China hates us, but really doesn't want open war, because then it would most likely turn nuclear and would be bad. But they did assist North Korea against the U.S. and it's allies in the Korean War so who knows.

It would be a dumb descision if they do attack the U.S.
I certainly don't know if anyone said this yet(and I'm not rooting through 6 pages to find out) but china needs us to much for them to hate us considering most of their economy is based off the success of the US economy.

And the Chinese helped North Korea in the beginning of the Korean war because we attacked them first. in fact the americans and Chinese had a treaty that stated that as long as the americans stayed out of china the Chinese would stay out of Korea. actually, we didn't attack China, we just pushed the NK forces all the way to the China border, and China started getting worried that we would invade them, which is understandable since one of the main U.S. generals wanted to and was threatening to.

Hell, China may not even get involved at all if this happens for all we know.
Actually we pushed into Chinese territory. I think I was wrong about us attacking them but we definitely pushed into Chinese territory. All the same though, I think if NK uses a nuke they will definitely join in, they don't want a 4th nuclear power bordering them.
No, we didn't. We crossed a particular river nearby the Chinese Border, and China sent in the troops.
Our troops never touched Chinese soil.

Uh, I don't follow this much in the news so could someone tell me who's on the US's side and who's on NK's side? Or is this too complicated to answer?

you all don't seem to grasp the situation here do you?
it doesn't matter if they have less nukes than everyone else. the fact is that they have NUKES ANYWAY and no matter how you cut it those nukes would still kill a lot of people

and those of you who say that they are not stupid enough to attack america just remember that your talking about people who would glady sit in a airplane and drive it into an aircraft carrier or what not screaming BANZAI!!

so yes if america keeps up its whole "were the greatest country on earth...do what we say" routine then they will find themselves at war faster than you can say pyongyang

and then they will blame everyone but them selves as per fucking usual

NK would be VERY stupid to try to attack us. We've got more power than they do and if for some small chance they did hit us they'd have NATO to deal with. Besides i'd assume as with most dictator type people, they want to expand their power, so blowing up the entire planet isn't really an option for them.
