Heres the thing, North Korea doesn't have the technology to hit anyone with a nuclear missile.

Thanks to part of our Missile Shield program (specifically, the ABL), we would easily be able to intercept anything North Korea could manage to launch.

The main threat that comes from them, is the fact that they could smuggle the nuke into another countries city.

SEOUL, South Korea ? North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a series of missiles in the coming days.

Off China's coast, a U.S. destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship suspected of transporting illicit weapons to Myanmar in what could be the first test of U.N. sanctions passed to punish the nation for an underground nuclear test last month.

The Kang Nam left the North Korean port of Nampo a week ago with the USS John S. McCain close behind. The ship, accused of transporting banned goods in the past, is believed bound for Myanmar, according to South Korean and U.S. officials.

The new U.N. Security Council resolution requires member states to seek permission to inspect suspicious cargo. North Korea has said it would consider interception a declaration of war and on Wednesday accused the U.S. of seeking to provoke another Korean War.

"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," the official Korean Central News Agency said. The warning came on the eve of the 59th anniversary of the start of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula in state of war. The U.S. has 28,500 troops in South Korea to protect against an outbreak of hostilities. Tensions have been high since North Korea launched a long-range rocket in April and then conducted its second underground atomic test on May 25.

Reacting to U.N. condemnation of that test, North Korea walked away from nuclear disarmament talks and warned it would fire a long-range missile. North Korea has banned ships from the waters off its east coast starting Thursday through July 10 for military exercises, Japan's Coast Guard said.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday that the North may fire a Scud missile with a range of up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) or a short-range ground-to-ship missile with a range of 100 miles (160 kilometers) during the no-sail period. A senior South Korean government official said the no-sail ban is believed connected to North Korean plans to fire short- or mid-range missiles. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

U.S. defense and counterproliferation officials in Washington said they also expected the North to launch short- to medium-range missiles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

South Korea will expedite the introduction of high-tech unmanned aerial surveillance systems and "bunker-buster" bombs in response to North Korea's provocations, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said, citing unidentified ruling party members. Meanwhile, a flurry of diplomatic efforts were under way to try getting North Korea to return to disarmament talks.

Russia's top nuclear envoy, Alexei Borodavkin, said after meeting with his South Korean counterpart that Moscow is open to other formats for discussion since Pyongyang has pulled out of formal six-nation negotiations.

In Beijing, top U.S. and Chinese defense officials also discussed North Korea. U.S. Defense Undersecretary Michele Flournoy was heading next to Tokyo and Seoul for talks.
South Korea has proposed high-level "consultations" to discuss North Korea with the U.S., Russia, China and Japan.

Any thoughts? Think they pose any credable threat? I don't. We have more nukes than them, and they have a smaller landmass. WE can wipe them from the planet.

50 years from now they'll be studying this in a history lesson. Fascinating.
I really like thinking about what current events are likely to stay in discussion longer than a few years, and I suppose if this escalates, it will. I sort of want it to escalate, mainly out of boredom.

They are just talking big. They may have the fire power to wipe Los Angeles or Washington DC (God forbid) off the map, but that would be the last act of North Korea before the country was reduced to a smoking pit by America. They can't honestly be stupid enough to try.

Look at this, im hoping that russia doesnt get involved, look at the size of the Tsar Bomba! And that is only half of the size it was supposed to be, and that was in like 1962. it just looks really intimidating.

If they do they'll launch more either duds or shit-yield rockets, or invade us with their army they don't feed.

Obama is pretty much a loser too... He's a moron for pushing his healthcare program and TREMENDOUSLY increasing government spending despite a huge defecit.

However, I am confident that any attack from North Korea would be met with greater force from the U.S. as well as China. China is the greatest reason that NK won't do anything... They don't want to risk U.S. missiles landing in their backyard.
Um....

1) The only way out of a recession is to spend into defecit. Granted America's is a tad bigger then the rest of the world's deficits.

2) America would get a lot of hate mail if they ever launched a nuke anywhere near the Asian region. And with China, all North Korea have to do is basically thrown a nuke over the fence if they hit the US.

One nuke in North Korea sends fallout into China and most other neighboring countries. Fall out seeps into the ground, into the water and within a few months you have a serious problem not only in neighboring nations but in oceans that contact/feed into plenty of countries. I honestly think if North Korea does launch a nuke at the US or any of her allies, well just about anyone, the world as we know it ends in a very Terminator style way with a very Fallout 3 twist to it.

I think they're just trying to play with the big boys. The problem I have with it, though, is that the leaders of North Korea seem to be thoroughly insane.

Not sure how much of a "legitimate" threat the country is, but as a resident of a neighboring country I can't help but be a bit concerned.

Everyone thinks that Kim Jong Ill isn't crazy enough to attack us. I think he is. He has listened to his own propaganda long enough he probably thinks that he really is a god or divinely protected or something. As far as missiles are concerned, I doubt that they would reach their target, but I wouldn't be surprised if they try anyway.
their missiles are total ass

they couldnt even send a rocket in to space for god sakes
without icbm's going into low orbit they wouldnt be able to reach long distance countries

the only countries they threaten are

south korea
china
japan

and those are easily defendable from nuclear missiles with the stationing of anti missile missiles.

besides if 1 nuke is used or fired from north korea to alaska.

just think about MAD the country is done
north korea will cease to exist and will be quarantined for the next hundred years because of the massive ammount of radiation from the nuclear blasts

I agree totally, but anyone in power cannot take a threat like this lightly. There is 99.9% chance that a missile fired will not be effective, but if it is that 0.01%...

I think it would be best to err on the side of caution.

Posturing. Too many allies to compete with if they do anything serious.
They do have that, but if they have nukes like they are claiming, they could possibly be a mild threat if they were to launch them at major cities of the world.
That's just not going to happen. Destroying the world won't help them one bit. Killing everyone also won't be something that they would ever do, because the retaliation would wipe Korea off the face of the earth, not to mention the economy would be affected. Besides, that's about as absurd as a plot out of a James Bond movie.
But their leader is crazy enough to be a 007 villain, so I wouldn't be too surprised if Kim tried to pull of that kind of shit.

Like a gnat on an elephant's ass...

Then again, we probably get threatened by countries on a daily basis. I'm sure it's nothing to get too worked up about.

North Korea poses the biggest threat to us if they sell nuclear materials to extremist groups who would actually do something with them. Dirty bombs aint fun I'm guessing.

If North Korea tries attacking America, I'm hoping that China, our greatest trade ally begins to see them as a threat. The Chinese could devastate North Korea like no one else could imagine.
I read somewhere that even china are telling NK to back off a little bit, Sino-American relationships are getting better, no-one wants a new war.

See if they attacked us it would be futile. There would be a huge surge in nationalism litterally thousands would join the Army,Navy and the Airforce.Let's not throw out the fact that South Korea is on our side giving us an invasion spot. Plus if our Allies side with us (If it's a nuclear attack I could see why they would) then North Korea would be overwhelmed.

if they tried to nuke us and lets say they get lucky and launch 4 missiles and lets just say it gets past our multilayer deference we would retaliate with such a shit storm that we would turn them to piles of dust, and that's just us,our allies would also help us stomp NKoreas ass into the dirt (the glowing dirt)

If North Korea REALLY wants to do this and they attempt to do it I better not hear a peep from the nuclear arms hippies because the gloves are off, screw them

I say make an example out of them. If they try to pull bullshit and they launch nukes at us we just carpet bomb from the line to the hills up north and nuke their strongholds (5* Hiroshima, you know the tiny ones we have) and bomb until the ground glows

Russia is already involved where do you think they got all of their tech? It was more than just China's old stuff.
