I have a history of loitering around the Soul Calibur 4 online multiplayer. I love this game for whatever reason, but this isn't what this topic is about.
While on their I keep finding myself becoming the victim of the No Girls Allowed club. When I enter matches I occasionally will get sneared at for being a girl. One of my favourite most recent lines I had to take before being kicked was: "God, this is why girls suck at games, they have to cheat to beat a guy!"

why is it that girls have to take this kind of smack talk? I realize that there will always be smack-talk online, however it seems girls get attacked from the moment we enter a room.
Trying playing TF2, nobody gives a shit.
Although I expect you'll get quite a lot of friend invites... :p
Yeah I've heard a lot of good things from the TF 2 community. :)

If I find a girl in a game online I... I... Am completely indifferent, and tell people to fuck off generally whether they are insulting the girl or anyone else. The famous line 'It's only a game, ******' comes to mind often whilst playing MW2 it seems.

Aaaaand that's why I barely ever play online games anymore. Too many angry people shouting at each other for silly reasons and too many people weeing themselves in anticipation to bash someone for sex or nationality.

There's a lot of younger boys out there who do want their games to be a boys club - I suppose because they have yet to grow out of the girls-are-icky mentality or they're just intimidated by the fact that a girl could be better than a dude. Whatevs. If it bothers you, mute them and don't use a mic.

Console multiplayer
Well there's your problem right there! Doctor TOG recommends that you play two PC Games with every meal.

In all seriousness, it's the internet. Most people on the internet are shitbags, doubly so with online console gaming. Harden the fuck up or just quit playing (or come play PC Games where nobody really gives a shit).

Guys are douche bags, online. This is the main reason why you won't see me there. :p

Just play without a mic and mute the TV. That's what I do, and I'm a guy.

Not taking into account the trolls who attack everyone just "4 teh lulz", here's my point of view on the pathology of these people (I'm a guy btw):
Out in the real world, these guys are dominated by women on a daily basis; whether it's by their mothers, or hot girls making fun of them and rejecting them. These guys have probably been humiliated and emasculated by women for most of their lives, and video games have been a refuge for them. Now imagine their outrage (however unjust) at seeing a woman, who represents to them their generalized contempt for an entire gender, "invading" their refuge and emasculating them further. From this point of view, you may be able to at least understand the feelings behind their ignorant comments; whether its taking an unhealthy amount of pleasure in defeating the embodiment of their insecurities and using this feeling to take ignorant potshots at their gender, or losing and being emasculated yet again and taking refuge in the idea that if it was a girl that beat them then they must have been "cheating".
So ignore these poor boys, and don't let them get to you. Instead, you should probably pity them, because they're more afraid of you then you are of them.

Well the problem is you are probably playing on console multiplay were you have to listen to abuse on the PC it is mostly lines of text you can easily ignore

I don't get "attacked", so to speak. I get messages asking if i'm really a girl, if i have facebook/msn, and if i'll rate pictures of them.

[sub]No joke, a guy added me during MW2 and sent me a picture of him awkwardly posing and tensing his muscles, asking me to rate him...[/sub]

apparently xbox live is now a dating site...

Play the game to play it, who cares about what they say? You could just not tell them you're a girl, though, or pick a guy character. Or is there some kind of profile set-up that makes it impossible to keep it unknown? I'm not familiar with any of the Soul Calibur games after the Game Cube one.

Most guys have a very fragile ego. They are simply afraid of you emasculating them. If a man beats another man, then that's alright because "he was the better man." If a girl beats a man, then that is quite embarrassing for the man in question because it greatly undermines his masculinity as he fell victim to the "weaker sex."

Everyone takes that kind of "smack" talk.
If people got bent out of shape everytime a 10 year old insults them...

No one would play any game.

Surveys have found a rather large percentage of online players are female. They just avoid saying so for fear of what happened to you.
But that's such an oxymoron... If they knew more girls were playing, there wouldn't be an excuse to think of girl gamers as a type of person to be abused. It would be made known that anyone could be a girl, and people would probably clean up their act, then, so as not to appear as bad people in front of 'The Ladies'.

Alright, all of that might not be true, but hiding, making people think you're not there, is going to make them think you're never there. And then probably make you a target for that kind of abuse when you win because no one ever thinks that person that just killed their ass in Modern Warfare 2 is a girl; Which in turn makes them think that when a girl kills their ass, that means they're cheating.

It just seems kind of... Contradictory.

It's simple. Girls aren't good at games and have to cheat to win.[small] Take that seriously and I'll punch you through the internet.[/small]

Jokes aside, no one likes to get beat. The first thing people say is that you cheat or camp(depending on the game). Then comes the personal attacks. They'll use accents, race, gender, hell even your username to try to berate you, all because they lost.

We've got two females in our usual MW2 group that are usually near the top of the scoreboard. They catch a lot of flak for it, but just shrug it off and keep on whoopin' ass.

Let me break it down

25% of those cases are succesful trolls.

60% are online guidos who think they are "TEH 1337 HAXOR BRO"

15% are people having a bad day who are taking it out on you for their loss, looking for an excuse to explain their loss.

Well,at least we got that out of the way ! nah JK

I have a surprisingly high number of "girl gamers" as friends online, mostly because I don't tend to spout out "OMG ITZ A GIRLZ!!1!"and don't see the problem when a girl beats me,it's exactly the same as when a guy beats me ,so whats all the fuss?

Guys on the internet are afraid of cooties. They act like (or are) prepubescent kids and such kids have not "discovered" girls yet. I think in actually they might just be afraid those since girls do not fit into their idea of "gamer." Oh, and geeks who have never even had a girlfriend are afraid of girls, especially those that could whoop them in a videogame. Fear the vagina of doom!
