Because violence is okay and morally acceptable, whereas nudity and sexuality are just plain evil. Of course it's natural as every mammal creature reproduces this way (and most of them are naked all the time), and of course you see yourself naked everyday, but still: It's disgusting. So kids, whenever you're naked in front of the mirror, remember: You are disgusting.

...

I believe the whole issue has something to do with christianity.

Personally, I find naked people much less appalling than people getting ripped apart, but that's just me.

Erm, i know a straight guy who cant get turned on by 1 or more glances at a naked woman. Depending on the guy and his frame of mind, it isnt always just the woman being naked thats needed to turn them on...

Im a woman with a small amount of experience in that field... and friends who've been there.

This leans towards a few short sighted trends.

(TL;DR below.)

Some women feel that having female skin shown to "strangers" is akin to taking advantage of the gender.

(This is evident on a smaller scale, when you see a woman in a short skirt in public. If she catches your eyes on her, even if you were only looking at her to make sure you didnt bump into her, she can shoot you the dagger-glare, and youre pretty defenseless against it.

The rub here, is that she does want SOMEONE to notice her, its just not YOU. This can bleed over into other forms of media, like videogames.

Showing female skin is only ok, if the female in question has consented to each and every set of eyeballs present. Anything less is 'demeaning' and sets the gender back.)

Another way of looking at this is that nudity =/= pornography in a surprising number of minds.
This is also why there are typically age-limits on pornographic material.

Lets be totally honest. No matter what sort of scripting and 'talent' (bowchikawowwow) someone has on a porn set, it all pretty much boils down to a masturbation aid. Dare I say it... an object?

Porn isnt interactive... if it was, it would be sex. And if you were exposed to porn at a young age, without the tempering social-life (school, being a primary example) balancing your ideal of what a girl was, then you could very well grow up to believe that women were just that. Masturbation aids. Not people. And thats a road that too many Jeff Dahmers have traveled.

So age limits on porn (remember, porn =/= nudity to many) help us ensure that people grow up with their ideas balanced.

TL;DR: Nudity has age limits to keep boys from growing up objectifying women.

How about a naked woman beeing tortured?
I as a straight guy would most certainly not not be turned on by that.

So this is something that always bugged me, why is it that violence is much more accepted than nudity in videogames?
Because when Uncle Jeremiah goes and cuts the cow's throat back at the farm so we can all have some beefsteak, that's perfectly acceptable and you should watch and learn.

But sex is the devil's temptation and you should be ashamed for doing it. Now go do 1000 Hail Marys and repent for your sins.

Slightly less serious answer, but you can see where i'm coming from.
Lmao. That's about the extent of the Bible, right there.. That and Homosexuals/shrimp are abominations to god.

Note: I am gay, so I'm not saying this to insult anyone. Also, I don't actually believe the Bible means that.. But that's a different conversation.

Because everyone has accepted violence as a part of the day. You see violence everywhere.
But you don't see sex.
People are violent all the time, everywhere you go.
But you don't find a lot of people making love in the bus. (I wish)

It's just the way things roll.
That's not the same where I come from...

Violence is everywhere. This guy on the Escapist had an excellent argument about exactly this.

You see violence everywhere. Fact. You also see violence everyday. Fact.
Of course it could be slightly less then 'everywhere' and 'everyone' but you get the point.

You don't see full frontal nudity in billboards, T.V. ads, School Hallways and etc. I wish .It's generally about Culture, violence is undoubtedly part of culture but nudity is not.

It's something we have to ease into. We survive on violence so it's taken as something more acceptable then nudity. After all, we didn't wear nothing to survive. We used violence.
Isn't it exactly the other way around?
We survive on procreation and you need to put at least something out to do it.
Violence against humans doesn't help us survive, if there wasn't any violence you would never even need to use violence to protect your life. If you kill/hurt someone to protect yourself, you decrease his chances of survival, so it's even anyway.

Christ, I sound like a goddamn hippie.

I'm thinking that a 13yr old boy would get a "clue" to whats going , but 13yr old boys arn't allowed to play rated M games right?

because we live in a puratin/christan based society nudity, even non sexual nudity, is perceived as evil, our culture is so steeped in it that it pervades even our society today.

hell even in catholic grade school, we were taught that nudity was a sin and wrong etc by the old 90 year old nuns that still taught.

now days the crusade is slowly turning towards violence, hell i read on another forum one woman i assume said that todays games are filled with pornography and violence in a discussion on the ca video games law. and more and more the champions of safe and healthy children want to tell us all what we can play with bans and laws and alot of beating the drum for the uninformed masses.

gfx are getting better and maybe one day we will be to the point that god of wars and other games get so real that it is disgusting, but we are pretty far off that scale yet. i mean i never got turned on by a video game girl or by the few games that have had "sex" scenes, the ones in dragon age were pretty laughable, ditto for mass effect 2, where the me1 one was sorta sexy it did not show any more than a daytime soap. but the vast majority of nudity in games is just cartoonish. certainly there are no hardcore graphic sex in any of the games i have played.

unless your importing the hardcore japan games which i am sure none of these people decrying sex and violence in video games have ever seen or heard of, then most of them are talking out their asses. and most people outside japan have never played them, you certainly cannot goto your local gamestop or walmart and get those games. heavy rain in jp had a graphic rape scene in it and that was totally removed from the game outside jp.

as gfx improve could be be in for some trouble down the road? sure. but i never saw anything in a game that came off as omg real violence, most if it is over the top like in a gow, most of it is toned down in game to some blood splatters in the vast majority of fps games, which is about as far off real as you can get when you shoot someone in the face or put a shogun blast into someones gut.

without wanting to sound like a douchy armchair philosopher, thats just the way society is.
I blame religion. Read the Bible or the Qu'uran, and they all speak out about sex, but go into graphic detail of how mashed up your scrotum will be by the time Satan's finished with it, and how fried your cock will be after a nice helping of Smite from god.

I believe America today is overly sensitive to nudity, especially considering it used to be called "fine art". Most other countries have no problems with it. However, the main reason why we care so much is because of....children. Yes, we don't want our children viewing HORRIBLE EVIL NUDITY THEY SEE EVERY DAY ANYWAY. Nudity is viewed as sexual in nature by the majority of America rather than simply being a state of someone lacking clothing. So, in order to prevent our children from turning into sex crazed monsters, we hide it from them.

Why is nudity sexual in nature, though? Sure you have to get naked to do the nasty but you have to get naked to take a bath or shower too. The reason America views it as sexual is because in general America is a sexual country. Nobody wants to admit it but the majority of America is hankering for some sweet sweet lovin's.

Yet this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH VIDEO GAMES. People are saying "Censor that stuff!" Ok, we make a rating system telling you what sort of audience a game is suitable. America's response? "Censor that stuff!" What. We did. We did the whole rating thing. What more do you want? "We don't know but we're pretty sure we're mad about it because the media tells us to be!" Ok. We censored that stuff. Now all you have is side boob. "WHAT! SIDE-BOOB?! IN MY VIDEO GAMES?! BETTER CALL FOX NEWS WE HAVE SOME PARTLY EXPOSED TITTIES TO BASH"

Mindless sheep.
Win. This shows how wrong society is in every way.

Now I see alot of people making connections to religion, something completely understandable, as much as I disagree with it.
I'd just like to add that I'm from Sweden, a country according to the latest figures I saw is composed of 80% atheists. So me and many like me have grown up without religion. To draw furthe parallels, in swedish movies (games from here is very rare at best) nudity is far more common than an american movie from the same year. In my experience brittish movies is also a lot more free of the nudity taboo.

Have you seen The Witcher 2 trailer? One of them you have Triss and uh... the dwarf... recounting stories of Geralt, and in the dwarf's version there's a woman being tortured and she's topless, anyway. Full frontal!

...Uh.. I'll excuse myself out

I think it could really add some substance if used properly, and I wouldn't feel like I was being patronized when characters have to have sex in their underwear/offscreen/censored whatever. It would also open the door to me ever seeing Leon's weenie.

" You know, sometimes I wish I did a little more with my life instead of hanging out in front of places selling weed and shit. Like, maybe be an animal doctor. Why not me? I like seals and shit. Or maybe an astronaut. Yeah. Like, be the first ************ to see a new galaxy, or find a new alien lifeform... and fuck it. And people'd be like, "There he goes. Homeboy fucked a Martian once."
Clerks 2 quotes make me smile :)

OT: I've never understood why nudity is so taboo compared to violence.
Although, I don't think anything necessarily needs nudity in it to get the point across, whereas most games require violence in it somewhat otherwise our games would all be like Dora the Explorer or Barbie Horse Adventure
