I learned that sticking your self with random needles will have nothing but positive effects, because of Fallout and Bioshock.
Same goes for drinking pills you find while looting people's houses.

I learned what Tango, ETA and other things stand for playing Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
I also learned most of the Radio Alphabet playing military shooters.
How do you drink a pill? Y'know, besides dissolving it in water.

OT: I learned that Water beats Fire, Swords beat Axes, and that flanking is a damn good strategy.

I just hate how I actually took the effort to go to school and learn it for a while just to instantly be thrown into that crowd due to the ever-growing stereotype...
/end rant.
You got to take Japanese lessons in school, that's just unfair!!! I would've liked to, I can say that by reading manga they always insert side notes when there happens something out of the ordinary according to western culture so you get a small small small tiny education in Japanese culture from this and you learn that Arigato is Thank you and so on but No major things.

Also always be careful about what you learn from games and the sort since the translators might be wrong in just translating since the meaning might be a totally different one!
Yeah my high school had a Japanese course, it was pretty cool. (AND HARD. Imagine having 3 alphabets. And the most simple one has 51 characters in it.)
Yeah see what you learn is just excellent common knowledge, knowing what thank you, hello and goodbye are can actually come in handy sometimes, just knowing the basics of casual speak is great to know as well when you watch a movie and there are Japanese characters, and one says something to the other, but it was not enough for the need of a subtitle, you can sometimes pick up what the subject was. I have occasionally.
Knowing it is fine, it's when you try and use it in a practical situation or turn around to that Japanese kid in your math class and say 'Konnichiwa!!! Ongenki desu ka?!' He'll look at you like you're a f'kin idiot.
And just people saying "That's so kawaii!!!" in caramelldansen videos on youtube. WHICH ISN'T EVEN JAPANESE. I shit you not, go watch caramelldansen on youtube and there's people who say it's "kawaii' although it's clearly not even in Japanese.
Just irritates the hell out of me when people try to act that smart and make me look stupid.

I learnt about 90% of what I know about the middle ages from Age of Empires 2. That is a lot considering I am obsessed with the middle ages, and am in a medieval group. All thanks to a game :D.

I learned about police brutality from Jet Grind Radio and product placement from Sonic Adventure 2. Oh come on. Don't tell me you forgot about this.
You forget that Soaps are awesome an that graffiti is even more awesome.
I'd already learned both those things before I even bought a Dreamcast.
Then why did the (overly blatant) advertising bother you? I thought it was kinda neat.
I never said it bothered me. As far as product placement goes, a couple billboards on one level is pretty tame. It just stuck out when I first saw it, and still does. I guess that was the point, right?

I learned a lot of German from playing the Wolfenstein games, I learned some stuff about deep sea life in Bioshock, and I learned how to pick locks from Splinter Cell. I also learned a tiny bit about Trench Warfare in The Darkness. I have probably learned a few things from Silent Hill that I'd rather not know about. If you think I'm kidding, guess again.

They're not trying to look smart; they're trying to fit in. Same with everyone who says shit like "smexy."
I never considered people using 'Smexy' a bad thing. I always just thought it's how girls referred to anime guys as being sexy. Hence the M standing for male or something. Don't really know, could care less.
One other thing, being a bit new to the escapist I'm guessing the 'snip' is just still alerting me to the fact I have been quoted but getting rid of my TL;DR to make thread pages less lengthy?

Learned about different engine types (N/A, turbo, supercharged, forward, rear, and middle mounted, how to tell whether a car is FW or RW just by looking at the engine...), how to tell when to shift in manual just by using the sound the car makes, the different styles of power-sliding dependent on what kind of drive-train you have. All this from Initial D.

Also learned a lot of neat little tactics by playing Total War games. Learned a lot about weaponry by playing Bad Company 2, some modern military tactics for small-squads by playing stuff like Republic Commandos and the like.

Stuff like that, I'm guessing?

I'm a much better driver thanks to racing sims like rFactor and GTR Evolution. I have a much better feel for the limits of traction and control, developed some good error correction techniques, and most importantly, that driving flat out is fun, but one small error or surprise bump in the road is fatal, so I know never to go anywhere near that limit in a real car. Actually, that last one was more from Test Drive Unlimited - not a sim as such, but a pretty good representation of driving in normal, albeit very light, traffic.

BTW, Need for Speed or Grid won't give you a realistic feel for how a car behaves. I can't speak for Forza or Gran Turismo, but I hear they're pretty good if you turn off all the aids. Knowing how to set up a car is handy, but not really applicable irl unless you're a race driver.

No, wait I take that back, I did learn how to play texas hold 'em from a videogame, although I forget which one.
My friend, I do believe you learned how to play Texas Hold'em from GUN. to my knowledge, its the only game with that particular poker game in it.

Also, video games can teach you quite a bit...... depending on realism markers >_>

I was a member of my high school's anime club during the entire four years I attended, and I am a veteran of several free-to-play MMOs, so...I've known one too many people that use the "word" as a general replacement for "sexy," not just in reference to cute dudes. These same people are, in my experience, the ones most prone to using "kawaii" and "yesh" in everyday conversation. I know someone who adds "sh" to words any chance she gets. I really, really have no idea why.

That's always what I've understood it to mean. I've actually never officially confirmed this with anyone, now that I think about it...

Edit: You've been here longer than I have!
